Server pride or allegiance?

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630

It used to be that when you selected a server, your character was pretty much destined to be there forever unless there was a server merger.  Servers were also smaller then. I remember people caring about what server they were on, and it being a part of their identity.

Today servers are much larger. Some games let you transfer servers. And EVE doesn't have servers at all.

So I'm curious whether you feel any kinship based on your server? Is it a point of pride being on any particular one? In cross server PvP do you want your server to look good, or does it matter?

Do servers have any relevance left at all?

I haven't done a ton of MMOing in the past 5 years. However, I can tell you the server I played on for UO, SWG, and WoW. For Warhammer and Aion I don't have any idea. I don't know if that has anything to do with server pride, perhaps more to do with the number of servers and length of time playing the game. My general impression that your assumption is more correct than not.

Add: I would say this has more to say about communities dieing than dieing server pride. It is the community that makes the server special.

Not to me.  To me what has relevance are the people I play with.  A server is just a piece of hardware.

In swg I sure did. These were my buddies I'll never forget sunrunner and all the memories. I was proud of my server back in the day, I also remember my server in wow when I played.

I think servers act like a virtual hometown, you grow and play there and make friends. It maybe the same game same machinery behind it all but its the community that you really get tied to.

Different servers in WoW have different reputations.
    .
For example the Moon Guard server is where a lot of RP people go.
    .
Tichondrius, Skullcrusher are good for PvP, etc

A few years back when I played WoW it did. I made a lot of friends on a server through pvp systems. I took in belonging to my specific server. But when they all got merged in the pvp system and people can transfer just like that, that feeling seemed to die.

I'm not saying that ruined pvp or anything just that feeling. Now you can pvp with merged servers and after the battle they aren't there. Before they were and you would make new friends because of that and cheer on about your victories or horrible defeats :D.

But... change is inevitable, even in gaming :D!

back in the day, yeah, few people so the "unspoken rules of chivalary" worked even among pk´s.

now with the flock of teenagers and housewives, not a damn, gee now i want pk EVEN guildmates.

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

I think the OP might be an old DAOC player, where server and realm pride did exist.  Servers weren't just a piece of hardware, they were the virtual "world" that your charcter lived in and I remember proudly being a member of Ablion on Morgan Le Fay and scorning those layabouts on Lancelot or the Hibs/Mids on my own server.

It was all in fun, but you did feel pride of belonging and you didn't fear your realm mates, they were actually all pretty good folks. (no need to retreat into your own little guild all the time).

Now in the era when people can routinely reroll or even transfer their characters to another server there is much less of this, in fact, probably not any.

But regarding the OP's comment about EVE and its "one" environment, trust me, there's no lack of "pride" evident as most every EVE player is pretty proud of belonging to that universe and prospering.
