Wow maybe good at doing what it does, but the industry CAN do better. But that would need a developer with the resources and time to do it. Will someone like Bioware take the WoW formula and make it better? Or will they just do what the competition does and attempt to recreate the quality of WoW, but fail like the rest?
Only time will tell. No guarantees.
But suffice it to say that whilst WoW was a big step forward in the evolution of the industry, it certain ain't the final step.
Since McDonald's is so popular, why are there other fast food restaraunts? Because McDonald's is making so much money those other fast food places must be losing money, so why do they still exist?
No, it's not a joke, I'm stating that it's a waste of developers time and money to create new MMORPG's and same applies to maintain the old ones. WoW as you know has 11 million subscribers, I'm not sure on what the player population is for every MMO but they are not in the millions I can tell you.
actually according to blizzard, they're quarterly earning from subs back in December was 315 million. so let's do the math.
315 divided by 3 = 105
105 divided by 15 = 7
that's 7 million players. and i highly doubt they got another 4 million subs since then, if anything they've lost more.
Right, except for the fact that Morhaime said that WoW has 11.5 million subscribers right now.

Was 11.5 million including the Chinese subs? Given the problems between the chinese authorities and Blizzard, it's shouldn't be surprising to see that their last quarterly revenue amount dropped.
However, right now Blizzard has nothing to worry about unless there is a trend in the decline over the next 12 months. Which is highly doubtful. Until then, Blizzard is still earning more than 10 time the amount of its competition. So I bet the directors ain't losing any sleep right now.

Well if this isn't a joke, it should be.
To answer the original question bluntly... There are other MMOs because not everyone likes the pre-teen cartoonish graphics, simplistic game play, and many many other reason you can find if you just read these forums. The whole thing sounds like a obnoxious teenager... but Mom, Dad everyone else is doing it!
Quantity doesn't make right, quality does and as we all know there isn't a lot of quality out at the moment and WoW is FAR from a quality game to enough people for those other games to run at a profit or they wouldn't be there. Not to mention not everyone likes fantasy games geesh.
Your basic premise is flawed. Every other MMO out there isn't losing money. Most of them are raking in cash hand over fist. To answer your question, because not everyone want's to play WoW.
This first reply to your post is the most accurate one.
You think all these other MMOs stay open for years because they're losing money by doing so? You think UO EQ and AC are all running for over 10 years because losing money is fun?
Most of the MMOs out there are profitable. When they aren't they either make some changes to bring in new customers or they close down.
Every market has a leader, it doesn't mean every other company in the market is losing money.
From what I understand...Mcdonalds will allow u to keep eating there if u don't question their policies...which was very difficult for me so I can't eat there anymore...As long as u understand that Mcdonalds has a set hiarchy...U will fit right in. Otherwise, Go away!
After viewing his past posts I believe he is a WOW fan trolling for reaction or a WOW burnout frustrated that he no longer has a game so is, trolling for reactions. I could be wrong but the question in itself says troll to me as i cannot imagine this being a legitmate question.
While you might be right, I find it more entertaining to think that he was born from two downies, force fed lead based paint chips for 10 years. Additionally, every night for the first 6 years he was alive, mom and dad downy bowled him down the stairs for shits and giggles.
I think thats about the only way someone would make a post like this.
LMAO! Yes your idea is more entertaining and did truly make me LOL. Thank you.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Using that example, if we stopped at the rotary phone we wouldn't have wireless phones w/ cameras, video, and the almighty texting options.
Personnaly I am waiting for a combination of:
Character Customization of Aion
WoW fast twitch control style
Ultima Online Sandbox & Housing aspects
Crafting/Harvesting system like Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
Graphics as beautifull as Age of Conan
In-game UI as usefull/flexible as EQ2
Also in reguards to Ultima Online (Rares, In-game events and event items, Vet rewards all a bonus).

Does the amount of people of "Religion A" make it better over the population of "Religion B". Why should someone even be associated with "Religion C" if A + B have more people.
Most WoW players I know are like sheep just following because it is popular, some like it just because they do. Personally I have never had the inclination to follow suit. When you look from the outside in the game looks generic and outdated. I mean why the need for cataclysm if perfection was already there, point is things get stale that is why choice is a good thing.
Using populous as some kind of measurement doesn't work.
Because believe it or not, not everyone plays WoW. Perfect example is me. I have an active WoW account and within the next 2 months it is going to be cancelled forever when FFXIV officially releases as I am sure many others will be doing.

Why are you all taking the piss out of this thread. And no I am not a fan, if I was a fan I wouldn't have made this thread simply because I played this game for 4 years and quit last Decmember, why, because people there have a nasty and stupid temper and like I said in OP that friend finding is non-existant. Just for the record for the person who said they think "I want WoW to be the only MMO", that is not what I said, I said it might as well be the only MMO that gets played as not everyone play the others.
Here's a bonus question I'm going to throw in, what would the world be like if nobody played any of the other MMO's and WoW was the only MMO that gets played?

Contrary to what some think , not everyone plays WOW and this has been pointed out to you. No, not everyone plays LOTRO, EQ2, AOC or a plethora of other games but they remain and apparantly make money or they would not be available.
I cant speak for the world but if WOW were the only MMO I would not be playing the only MMO. My PS3 would get more use and my gaming PC would be loaded with more single player games. You may have quit WOW but the obsession seems to be living on.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Well that was to clarify I don't support WoW but it's not like anyone is going to give me a helping hand or listen to me when I most need it. Anyway, if WoW is so good then what is the need and point to make more MMORPG's since they all crash and burn anyway and will never match WoW's player population numbers?
I really can't believe that somebody as said this. WoW is but one of many MMORPG's on the market and not everybody likes or plays it. For example you sound like you enjoy it. On the other hand, I would love to see WoW burn at the stake and I'll bring the marshmallows along.
Just having one MMORPG on the market would make the world a very boring place indeed. It's like having only one flavour of ice cream, or one type of chocolate bar. Sooner or later, your going to get sick of eating it.

How many times do I have to keep stating this, I hate WoW due to how bad I was mistreated in this game by everyone (example, I was doing AV 50-60 as a Night Elf Druid and nobody was bothered to win the match aginst the Horde and they told me to away) and was never a Warcraft fan person in the first place, end of story.
Though I do agree with you to burn it on the stake and I would love to have those marshmallows.

Hehe, everyone should know that her newist song "Alejandro" is a rip off of the song "Don't Turn Around" by Ace of Base. Quite simply Lady Gaga is a thief and I'm starting to really like Ace of Base a lot, it sure brings back nostalgic memories.

This.
Also, just because something is working doesn't mean you shouldn't continue innovating to make something better! I'm always watching for the upcoming MMORPGs.
I mean, why make any other FPS games since the Call of Duty series is so popular? The short answer, even the less popular ones generally make money. Where there is money, there will be people trying to get it.

Without a doubt. OP put an above average effort into his trolling post so more people bought into it. This thread should begin and end with the headline.

Bad math. Most players don't pay $15 a month. They use game cards to pay by the hour.
315 million dollars covers the 12 M subscribers worldwide.
The salary in China is around 8-10% of EU. China is 50% of the subs and Blizzard only gets a % of the income (being licenced to a Chinese providor) ... the bill fits.
5/6 million coming from US/EU. And the other parts of the world contribute for the other 6 million players (but only paying 10% subscription fees).

God dam it, I am not an Internet Troll, I know the thread does sound corny but no way I'm I trying to pull peoples legs. This the dumbest topic I've seen in a while. MMOs don't need 11 million to make a profit. They can make a profit with merely 50k subs.
