My first choice is Asheron's Call. It's not just a great game by itself, it's the most soloable MMORPG ever.
My second would be EVE Online. High level of complexity and detail in the game.
My third is Anarchy Online. Great game, good complexity.

Actually I would have to say UO is the most soloable game ever, but if there is a second it HAS to be ac2. That was the sole reason I used to play that game casually, was because I could solo anytime against anything and not worry about a thing.
** edit: I was refering to ac1 above, not ac2 as I stated.

Asheron's Call 2 is much less soloable than Asheron's Call. AC2 is not bad for solo compared to most games out there, but not as good as AC.
That was a typo, I had ac2 on the brain from the poll, in my previous post I was referring to ac1. I voted ac2 as the best low population game.

You need to add Shadowbane to the list

Anarchy Online-Not low pop
Asheron's Call-Not too low pop
Asheron's Call 2-Not the best
A Tale in the Desert-Pretty decent. Only played it for 25 days
EVE Online-I gave it a week before I found it repetitive. Not exactly low pop
Horizons-Proably the best low pop
Toontown Online-Made for kids. Thought it has over 4k players
Savage Eden-SE is a good game. I would not call it low pop, though
The Saga of Ryzom-No idea.

I tried to add in the more popular games from the MMOG chart website under 100k players.
AC2 is really impressing me with all the recent changes. So, it's my choice.
Normally I would rate AC1 as the most under played and under rated game. With the recent screenshots of the "graphics update" and the other updates are really leaving me unimpressed. It looks like more progress is being made with AC2.
And whoever said Horizons... I played like 2 months ago and unless they fixed the lag, it's unplayable for me. The graphics were so etchy and jerky it nearly made me sick to play.

This thread, this topic, makes no sense. A "low population MMORPG" is a failing MMORPG.
AC2 is a f-a-i-l-u-r-e. It has been out for 2+ years, it is a modern, state of the art MMOPRG, and it has roughly 6,000 total players, with roughly 1,000 players online in the entire game at peak time. Some servers have between 100 to 400 players on them! AC2 is being kept on life support with the profits from AC1. AC2 has such a low population because overal the game sucks when compared to other MMORPGs. When compared to what else is out there. You want to solo? You can solo just as easily in SWG, and AO. In AC2 actually, you are FORCED to solo LOL! Because the servers are 85% empty!
EvE Online is NOT a "low population" MMORPG. EvE online has over 50,000 total accounts. Not a runaway hit MMORPG, but it is not a failure.
AO is doing OK. It's been around for years. It has roughly 20k to 50k total players. It peaked at roughly 50k roughly 1 year after its release. It sank in players not because the game bad, but because of it having a BIG game bug which made it 98% unplayable.
-------------------------------------------
Some one else was talking about the maximum players MMORPGs can have on each server or in the same game world. Older MMORPGs allow a max of 3k to 5k. Newer MMORPGs use newer database technology.
EvE Online allows up to 50k players online at the same time, in the SAME game world. They all can interact with each other. The most they've ever had online at the same time has been roughly 12k to 14k players.
SWG allows up to 12k players online at the same time, in the SAME game world. During its first 4 months of release, EVERY SINGLE SERVER was filled to the brim with 12,000 players online at the same time, in the same game world, interacting with each other.

Well i done a couple of trials on eve online and it does not fill like a low population mmorpg at all simply because everyone is on one world.
I have to go with AC2 its the more under rated mmorpg to have a low population i ever seen
There is a difference between failed MMORPGs and low populations. Failed mmorpgs are ones that have been cancelled, or will certainly soon be cancelled. AC2 has an expansion pack on the way, so it's not going to be cancelled soon. EVE is on the list because 50k subscribers is within range of what I was going for.
AC2 was a launch failure, but it's been a long time, and the game has improved tremendously during that time.
I'm surprised how few votes AC has gotten. It's probably the oldest game on there, but it's extremely fun.

I don't have a lot of MMORPG experience, but I have played what is now called Ashen Empires for several years now. It is truly a low population MMORPG with well under 10k playing on 2 servers. It has a very nice community and people tend to be friendly and ready to help, especially if approached in the right way. There are plenty of things to do besides the normal fighting of monsters. There are a whole range of skills you can develop from farming to tailoring to mining and to lumberjacking, and others besides those examples. I think it is a great game and it is now being developed by a company, Iron Will Games, that truly loves the game and wants it to provide the gaming experience that the community is looking for.
Give it a try, chances are, you will like it.
If it's a low population MMORPG, shouldn't it just be a MORPG? I mean, how could it be Massively Multiplayer if it's a low population game... I think we need a new acronym....
LPMORPG... Low Population Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game...
or
ACOMORPG... A Couple Of Multiplayers Online Role Playing Game...
or
NMMORPG.. Not Many Multiplayers Online Role Playing Game...
eve online is one great game very freindly corps but pretty complex to figure out if your new to mm0's
"It's the darkness that brings us power"
A low population MMORPG is not specifically a failure... take a look at NexusTk a low population (+/- 4k accounts) MMORPG which has been around for 8-9 years. I think you shouldn't look at the number of people playing an MMO, because low numbers say nothing about the profit the company is making of their MMO. Any MMO that doesn't bring in money will be cancelled and that would be considered failing.
Would you say a grovery store is a failure because they don't make as much profit as the supermarket three blocks away?

As did I.
I would have voted EVE, but I don't think it qualifies. I always see people in the sectors I am in, and the server is always sporting 5K+ players, which is more than I can say for even WoW/EQ1|2. They may not have 100K+ players total, but they've got them all packed into the same playspace, and you sure as heck notice it when you play.
I also would vote for Ashen Empires (although it is not on the list)
Playerbase: Approxiately 1200 (but growing), devided over 2 servers
Gameplay: PvP and non-PvP servers
Possibilities: Besides most 'MMORPG' you can become more than just a warrior, mage or archer, there are many other skills (currently my skill list contains more than 30 skills and I don't even have all professions on my list). With some great forging skills (Blacksmith) you could even make your own weapons and armor. Also there are countless of quests for low level characters but also for high level characters. You can become a guild member, but you can also quite easily make a guild yourself (only restriction is 4 quests you have to accomplish when you are above level 20). There is also room to be 'a nice brave little puppy' or to become a 'most feared criminal pk-er'.
Community: Extremely divided, you find all sorts of people on AE, youngest I have seen was 8, oldest I have seen was 66.
Requirements: According to homepage you need a +700 MHZ computer (although I heard people with far less are playing too without problems)
Costs: Only 9$ a month (compared to most MMORPG's that is almost for free)
Well just try it 7 days for free and you'll see, you can get info and/or download game at www.ashenempires.com
Also have to cast my vote for Ashen Empires. If you want high end 3D graphics this game isn't for you (The graphics are Isometric). If however you want great content, a very friendly community, excellent communicative Dev/GM team, 45+ skills with no class limitations, and a simple and clean interface then this is worth a try. Free trial, a PvP and non PvP server and a low monthly rate of only $8.95 (That's what? 2 beers? A 2 hour movie, a book? for a whole month of unlimited play that's not too shabby a bargain at all in my book). Less than 3k players right now makes this a nice comfy and friendly community: An, everyone knows your name kind of place. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. http://www.ashenempires.com
seriously... are these guys part of a marketing scheme for ashem empires?
I played AE for a bit... if you liked uo pre trammel then this game should be considered/ I just missed the lack of player housing and the like.
It's really got to be Saga of Ryzom. Give it a try, there is a free 2 week trial. The graphics are awesome, community is great, and it is class-less. We realize we are currently small and would love for you to come give it a try. The developers are adding stuff every week. www.ryzom.com
btw, this is my first mmorpg. A friend told me about it, and I was hooked 3 days into my trial. 4 months and counting.
