Public Quests - Well nevermind

Well my intentions was to build a thread on theory of the best way to have a questing dynamic. But I just read the Guild Wars 2 mechanics and vision. It seems as if I just can't compete with that right now. It's like how I can't come up with a better way to design the bard class, vanguard put the nail on the head with that one. I wanted to have the dynamic world as well, however, now if GW2 becomes a success it will seem as if I am "copying" them. At least they are heading mmos in the right direction.

Anyways I guess I'll go ahead and ask anyways. What's everyones view on public quests. I guess I got the idea from Warhammer. I envision my world to be on a single shard server in which the majority of aspects of the game was dainamic. Pretty much just had what GW2 now has. Maybe I can implement the mechanics better. Maybe the major difference is, my world is a seamlss single shard world.

So you only want to use features that are completely original? If other devs went by that credo, we'd have about .001% of the games we do today.

If I was you I'd just set out to create the funnest game possible, avoid any actual patent infringement lawsuits, and not worry too much about everyone thinking you are the next Einstein.

public quests in warhammer were fail. at first the requirements were pretty silly, to where you'd have to do the same quest a bunch of times to get the good reward. they did make it better, but the problem was that after every one leveled up you were alone doing quests that required a group, or a group of people at least. i don't know how to solve a problem like that in a linear level game. a skill based game could be different i suppose, i remember in SWG being somewhat new and grouping with vets and every one could get XP towards their skills... good stuff no level barriers so every one can play together.

What? Sorry, I don't comprehend stupid. I really hope thats your sarcasim talking. If it is, well the wow players do think that EQ is a wow clone.. well some of them.  I actually had an argument with a couple of them about this topic. Rather sad. Anyways, there are EQ and WoW clones. Vanguard is the only EQ clone I have seen. The rest are WoW clones if you wanna go that route.

Interesting. That grind is wide open and horrible design. I never played Warhammer. Basically, the GW2' implementation is exactly how Id implement it as well. Some stuff should be static, but most of it should be different. Also somethings in a dianamic world you're going to miss out on because you wasn't logged in at that time. That should be okay to a certain extent as long as encounters and stuff happens at different times ect. Like the examples they gave on their website, one day there is a happy village with npcs and then the next day the village is ran by centaurs. Thats how it should be. This is going to be a challenge to match this design.

WAR's public quests were very immersion breaking for me, the same scene replayed ad infinitum, i think Public quests should be instanced, and i'm not a great fan of instances :)
