Battle of the Immortals: Jump Into Unique Systems

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Recently, Garrett Fuller has been playing Battle of the Immortals from powerhouse publisher, Perfect World Entertainment. Garrett has found a lot to like in BoI so be sure to read his thoughts on the game.

Perfect World continues to add games to their stable and grow their MMO market share. At E3 we got a good look at Battle of the Immortals. The game has some really strong systems that work well in MMOs and also offers players in game buffs for using them, something that other MMOs could learn from. With a fun fantasy setting and lots of options for your character, Battle of the Immortals makes the strong arugment that Eastern games have a place with the Western audience.

Check out the rest of Garrett's thoughts about Battle of the Immortals .

Ain't nothing unique about OPEN pvp on every server..well except for the fact they neglected to mention it anywhere on the frickin' website. What a waste of 3 days.

If we fail to change the things of today, they will become the lucid nighmares of tommorrow.

I think this game offers great fun for the early levels, get to 60 however and it gets much less fun.

The cash shop is unfriendly, with many items only offering a percent chance (usually very low) of getting what you wanted, if you want to upgrade your gear, mounts and pet expect to see lots of frustration when things fail and you have the potential to lose everything you've built up to now, unless of course you buy further cash shop items....I don't see how the reviewer can say the cash shop is friendly, it really isn't.

It becomes an endless chore of doing the same events day in day out to get xp and cash, in game cash in itself is a nightmare to get, nearly all drops sell for 1 each, worthless.

Some of the mechanics are unique and to start there is a hell of a lot of fun to be had in this game, I played for a couple of months, think I spent around £15 to upgrade my inventory and stash, which you really will need to do, mail system didn't work so forget storage alts, it wasn't a lot to fork out for a couple of months fun so I'm certainly not gonna complain about what it cost me, just be aware, like most F2P titles you really are going to need to invest significantly in the cash shop if you want all those boosts to be competitive at later levels.

Ya not even going to go into using 10 mount gems and ending up with a lvl 0 mount.uggh! Wanted to point out that OPEN pvp is not announced anywhere on the website. wasted 3 days getting to lvl 48 only to end up in the graveyard after another player attacked and killed me without warning from behind. I did not even look to see what he looted from me i was so ticked off.

If you think that is unique go ahead and have at it. I have better things to do with my time than to give other higher lvl players stuff i earned.

If we fail to change the things of today, they will become the lucid nighmares of tommorrow.

this game is going to be another fail from pwe like ive seen them before lol. and yes i did play boi over 2 months but its just a joke. try enchanting anything at all in the game and you will notice all they want is for you to spend thousands and i do mean thousands of dollars on the cashshop. i mean come on a 24% of success and i faill 200 times in a row? not even talking about the bugs that have been around for ages and arent getting fixed. only thing they actually update is text dialogs that havent been translated yet lol. and to top it off they still claim this game is in beta but they do take money from ppl and theres is almost 0 support if you actually do get a problem ingame lol.

This game is MMO+Online Casino  mix and cash shop is just there to rip you off and they dont even try to hide that.

I did play this game in CB, OB and was ranked 5th on server before i stopped playing. the boreing part of this game is the daily events are amazing EXP and only true way of leveling after you reach 60+. Once you reach that stage  then everyday is the same as day before where you wait for a event to start so you can join.

There is no freedom in this game as such as just logging on and going to grind where you want yes you can do that to any monsters but it is horrible EXP.  You are channeld in a path and in that path it takes X amount of days to do things and there is no way for you to make it any faster.

Overall 1-60 part of the game was fun and new but later stages of this game needs huge improvement and for that i will give it 6/10.

I had to post this cause i want people to understand how not fun this game gets at higher lvls. If your like me and want your class to perform well at all levels you won't even come close to accomplishing it WITHOUT THE CASH SHOP pwe(PERFECT WORLD ENTERTAINMENT) cash shops are the ones that make me know for a fact that F2P(free to play) games are absolutely more expensive to fully enjoy as to P2P. The game was not horrible at start. they offer ingame coin for zen the ultimate currency to buy everything you want to enhance your toon to optimum potentional. the problem is rich or ppl with with lots of disposaible income ruin the balance of the game the zen/coin trade is horrible for new comers i pity them today. I am as hardcore as they come with a job 10+ hours a day and i can't keep up with top players with disposable income . i can't be completely upset as PWE they need thier pockets filled. But thats all this game is for if you have the I want to be the best or be in top classes you will never do it without investing cash. THIS GAME IS COMPLETELY RUN BY CASH SHOP BUYERS AND TRADERS and take My word for it i tryed to find every way around it. events won't make you get +10 items lol or give you a pet that would take you probabaly a month to save up for. i stoped playing this and am patiently waiting for a good p2p outside of WOW to play.

Another mediocre review by Garrett.  Yeah you can zoom in if you want to problem is you can't zoom out far enough to make the game playable.  These games were ok 10 years ago, just no excuse for a game that does not let you look up to see what is ahead.  Shame too as a lot of the other parts of the game is not bad.

But when you can see more area on a diablo screen than in this game it just makes it a very dated engine which just is not fun to play on.  I just tired of running into things I was not intending to run into because of this.  BTW all the mounts are item shop items.

Oh and the item shop Garrett is quite expensive, guess you did not bother to check that out.

Not that i'm defending this game, but there are two different camera options "Classic" and "Ultra" I believe they were called. Classic is close up, and Ultra is the far away one (basically the same as Diablo). There is also a Free mount from the Knight's Jail instance that starts at around level 20.

As someone mentioned, the game is fun for lvl 1-60. After that, it is absolutely awful.

Completely terrible. Quest chains don't give any experience. Mobs don't give you any experience. The only way to level is to do the daily events. They occur several times a day, depending on the event, at the same time every day. They're always the same. Same boring thing. Over. And over.

As was also mentioned, cash shop is there to help your upgrade chances and for you to buy materials to upgrade. Without spending money, forget about having any decent gear.

Overall, the game falls way short of the bar. Don't bother unless you have $100+ to blow on a game and don't care about content.

I enjoyed this game from 1-60 back in closed beta, and knew I'd never go back when it launched (open beta).  For those levels, it's good mindless fun.

It really is a casino in disguise after that point, where you swap money for (a chance at) power.  the (a chance at) must be the westernization they spoke so frequently of.

I played the game for a few days, put on a bunch of levels, was going into a new environment and back out again before I even got my bearings on the layout... at the end of it, I kept thinking "what the hell is the point of anything I'm doing here?"

The impression I was left with of the game is a massive "meh".

The cash shop shenanigans and its influence in the game is just par for the course of a F2P/cash shop MMO. No surprise there.

I played from start of OB up to the 90's and became truly bored of the game on many aspects.

The game is a CS (cash shop) disguised casino like other games from PWE so, money plays and money wins.

PvP is boring for non CS players (heck, even for CS users) and PvE is also boring..

Bring back Pay2Play, stop with this "FREE2play" nonsense !

I know ppl that have spend over 600€ on a FREE-to-play. LOL

I'll hang around untill SW-TOR launches, then all the small F2P games will hopfully DIE.

That was my experience as well. It was some entertaining mindless fun but it quickly becomes repetitive and lacks any kind of greater goal to work towards.

This guy must really like crappy f2p mmos lol.

Always the same stuff from PWE with just diffrent skins with the sole intention of removing the money from you to them.

If you don't know that the point of an MMO is becoming "the stongest" to be able to PvP anyone, then you shouldn't be playing them. Nevermind attacking BOI for it.

Ok, but that's true for ANY itemmall MMO. And it's only getting worse, more itemmall games appear every day. Are you gonna play any of the others then ? It's 100% the same, only less depth than BOI.

Wrong. There are plenty of MMO's with Item Malls that do not sell anything necessary to participating in the game, especially to the extent BoI does. DDO comes to mind, as does Monster Forest which primarily sells costumes, in addition to a few items that can easily be bought with in-game cash as well (monster nets).

    As for BoI having depth...lol...

Wow, tons of trash talking about the game. I am level 53 and started playing about 2 weeks ago. So far the game is a blast and all of the systems mentioned in this article are fun to mess around with. I do not think I have even ran a quest since level 20 and have gotten my levels from the instances and events. My wife though is levelling up through questing only. So for us the game is great so far, giving us a choice on what to do each day. But unlike some of the other posters we are not beyond level 60. As far as the cash shop goes they will get about 10 bucks a month from me and that is it. F2P games remain fun alot longer to me probably because I treat them as a side game to my main mmo.
