EA Mythic Merge with Bioware, Now Bioware Mythic

lethyslethys Member UncommonPosts: 585

Mythic, the company responsible for Warhammer Online, has now merged with EA's other MMO developer Bioware to form Bioware Mythic (not the most creative name).

Your thoughts?  I don't really see any change coming from this for WAR or SWTOR or any of the single player games that Bioware makes.  There may be some new ideas put into both of their MMO's but I doubt any really drastic changes will take place as a result of this.  Mythic is essentially dead and Bioware is pretty much locked into their SWTOR project, its already been fully fleshed out a while ago.

Very highly doubt that, if Bioware were there in the start then that would've bee a totally different story.

I doubt it too. They arn't as popular, though I would love to see WoW die. (No offense but WoW clones are getting out of hand. If we are going to have cloners, at least let it be a new style of clones.) :/

Most importantly is will this have any positive impact on War?

I fear the worst if KOTOR is successful, they may shut down Mythic completely

    Unfortunately true.

Warhammer had/has a lot of great innovations, but there is a lot lacking as well. I wonder if BioWare will even attempt to rebuild Warhammer Online, or if they'll go another direction entirely.

P.S. I did not read the article.

Think it was done more for accounting and investor purposes than it was anything else.  Outside of those two areas I don't see it really having an effect on anything.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Isn't the merger old news? It was announced a couple months ago, the latest.

Normally, id disagree, but i think if theres any group that could do DAOC 2 right, it would be bioware.

The recent product of BioWare (Dragon Age, revised Eclipse game engine(?)) was definitely not impressive from the technical point of view: overcomplicated and buggy engine that has no new features. This home-made engine is not able to compete with the leaders. The game was published in a rush, for sure following pure marketing demands. Cheap and lazy solution of making public original not user-friendly Tool Set (DAO level designer). The only hope is that they might use Unreal 3.5 engine (BioWare has a license for it, Mass Effect 2). Otherwise, it could be the same mess as with Dragon Age: a good game that was spoiled by bad publishing policy.

Agreed on Dragon Age. Even the website and advertisements could tell you it was rushed IMO.

Yeah because Mythic didn't do DAOC right?

    Shit (EDIT)

I was thinking of something else. The guys at Bioware are badass and they might be able to save the current Warhammer Online game from a Tabula Rasa fate. For some reason I read it wrong and was thinking this was in regards to the Warhammer 40k Online game. My bad

These days the name of the company hardly means anything, what staff are actually involved in the merger? EA has bought up, dismantled and recombined a lot of famous gaming studios. The old name counts for nothing, wait till you see the reviews of their new games!

With all due respect, but Bioware would be about the last company in the world I'd give the job to make a sequel of DAoC because the result would be nothing like DAoC.

If anything Bioware stands for extensive story, rather linear gameplay, lots of cutscenes and voice-acting, lots of rather small instances or zones, quests on rails - all fine for single player games but almost the exact opposite to the DAoC formula. If Bioware did DAoC the result wouldn't have any resemblance to the original DAoC - they'd make an interactive movie out of it ...

If I had to guess, I think EA did this not so much to help Mythic work on DaoC or Warhammer Online as much as Mythic has to help on Star Wars: The old republic.

Mythic works on two MMORPGs, one which lost most of its subscribers due to its age and a game that flopped. EA probably think its better to just let Mythic help out on SW:TOR, which at least does have a chance at success.

This. Companies hire for projects and keep only a handful of the team for other games. The people who made Warhammer Online were not the same people who made DoAC, etc.

I think the merger will be a good one, since they are both strong companies with a proven track record.

I am however annoyed at both their recent trends to reinvent old IP's, I think the future of MMO's will be in Original IP's that dont shy away from trying to break into the market with new and exciting ideas rather than being held back by companies which own the rights to IP's like Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop.

That is why I find games like Aion, TERA and 38 Studios MMO (Codenamed: Copernicus), exciting. Because they are New and Fresh, even if some of their gameplay mechanics might not be.

You base this of the many succesfull MMORPG's Bioware has developed???

Sorry we have yet to see if Bioware is actually good at developing/creating a MMORPG, with ST:ToR being their first test trial in this genre. And untill the game is released I don't really like to speculate wether the game is going to be good/bad. I am actually bouncing around with SW:ToR, when I first heard it I was slightly excited, when I read more and more my excitement lvl dropped allot, slowly it's going alittle bit up again but still not very excited so far, first want a actually playing test to make a reall opinion about SW:ToR, till then I am in the middle for it.

I am a big Bioware fan but as said we need still to see what they will offer in the MMORPG genre.

On Topic: Thanks for sharing the news, not sure if this means change, and if it "would" be change we still don't know if this could be positive or negative towards Mythic and Bioware games. Only time will tell.

In a perfect world The Old Republic would see its release date moved up benefiting from the experience brought in by the mythic staff. And then the team could look at making a necessary expansion to WAR bringing in a third faction to create a better sence of RvR and make WAR a great RvR style game.

In reality WAR will be left to die as the mystic devs slowly move over to ToR and we hope to hell that this doesn't lead to the same mistakes made in WAR where it takes months for anything to happen cause the devs loved a wait and see approach.

It's been pretty much shown to be that from the beginning, so no difference now.
