I can do that now in DF

so Iam confused. Was that the part you were referring to, or something else?

I would have to say the combat mechanics are more in depth in TERA than they are in darkfall. Not to mention enemy AI and graphically.

DF & Mortal tried to be next gen but they wound up being stiff's when it came to game mechanics.  Crappy coders can kill a game designers dream real quick IMO.

AI was pretty interesting in Darkfall itself.

I've heard Tera come up a lot. Maybe it will be the next Gen. Who knows. :]

This means that only next generation of players will be so lucky to play these MMOs. (he-he).

I guess there are no clear and generally accepted criteria for this, just impressive words.

You should definately check TERA out I am sure it will become pretty hyped the closer it gets to launch. Everything released so far is A+ in my books.

Now that I think about it, Mabinogi Heros engine seemed to be more interesting IMHO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLMTtYPetVQ

Of course because we are not dev's so we can only speculate,  But because more here have played games for a long time, they do have a feel for what is considered nex gen and what is not.  Next gen: voice activation, motion activation,  true 3d game world.. just to touch a few.

I would say Next Gen = a noticable evolution in a product  or a revolutionary product.  Basically it starts a trend towards new or greatly improved gaming mechanics.

Just what I think of when you say Next Gen...

A "generation" used to mean the processing power of a system; 8/16/32/64/128/256/etc

Now it pretty much solely relates to graphical technology since the porcessing power of hardware as pretty much topped out. Completely lost it's meaning imo.

"Next gen MMO" is just advertising term used instead of "new MMO", because "next gen MMO" sounds better.

In the past, it was possible to divide MMOs roughly into generations: WoW copied and improved on EQ1, so WoW was next-gen and EQ1 previous gen. But now the market is so diverse and the improvements so small, that it's not possible possible to draw any line between generations any more.

You fail at classification of 'Gen'

A next 'Gen' MMORPG would be something more real time and less hotkey bar then the current standard. I would guess a mutant hybred of Ultima Online and World of Warcraft that would end up something like this...

    This is a Ford EXP.

It is a hybred of a Ford Mustang and Ford Escort circa 1986.

There are no backseats. Also my first car.

This is how I feel about trying to find a suitible MMO to my styles of Ultima Online (PVP Era), World Of Warcraft (Crafting and Social) and Grand Theft Auto (3rd or 1st person view real time interaction including vehicles)

You have no idea what the topic is about do you.  I agree with your post, it just does not relate to the OP's topic.

must say Tera and Gw2, that im keeping my eye on, are samples of "next gen" mmo, for either bringing something new to the table or perfecting some broken mechanics.

Gw2 with dynamic events and personal story, combat, group play, pvp...

Tera with aiming combat, enemy Ai...

AGAIN, not about gfx or a new mechanics that has never seen before, but to take a feature, of our current stale genre, and taking a step with it.

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

My point stands. A next Gen MMO has nothing to do with the original meaning.

Moving from one generation to the next has nothing to do with controls, game philosophies or or playstyles - it's purely on technological advances, which nowadays are only in graphics.

~but by all means, feel free to butcher the misnomer further.

And BTW, I did answer the OP's question, you're the only person getting butthurt over the answer.

    Nothing but graphics.

I think it has everything to do with the controls and how you interact with the game and very little to do with hardware.  Give me wow with a skill bar or give me wow that is totally action based with no skill bar....I'll play the action version because I have done the skill bar for years and years now  and I"M BORED OF IT.

cool, you're allowed to think any way you want.

Well you are right in your answers.

I just mistook the OP question as something akin to a revolutionary new MMO that broke the mold of every other cookie cutter out there as 'next gen', and got all fired up.

I think the OP was confusing 'Next Gen' with 'Next Genre' because I for sure know that genre's and styles are becoming more and more crossbread as the years progress.

@ stayontarget quit ignoring my PM's or i'll cut you!  >=)

You may as well look at "next gen" in terms of content and mechanics, which require better hardware to stand above the older generations of games, do they not?

@ tav I love having to scroll through your massive sig
