Nexon doesn't make games, the most they do is localize them. I am fairly sure it was DevCat that made Vindictus, but it could well be that Nexon is the publisher of the game (threw money at it) on top of being the host of the online service.

You may be right, but either way, Nexon is hosting the game. Nexon hosting the game = has to obey to Korea Nexon orders. :[
Sorry I was on the phone finding out my uncle died and no one is picking me up from the airport when I fly to Sac tomorrow.
I thought you meant timetable generation MMO's as a side scroller, I don't know of any that came out before 3d or top down 3d MMO's came out before '97 thats why I asked >.<

I rate a higher generation on how more "real" it feels.
Meridion 59 with it's 3D graphics came out before Ultima Online which was in isometric 2D.
So that would according to me make Meridion 59 a generation 2 game and Ultima Online a generation 1.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Well the term next gen for games is usually attributed to consoles. Next gen meaning ps1 - ps2 - ps3. It's a big step forward from one console generation to the other. That however doesn't make sense for pc. Pc games evolve at a steady passing.

I couldn't have said it better.
PC games evolve way to fast IMO.
So this topic is divided by 0 in my eyes, and now they burn.
On a side note, poster about Meridian 59, you are right.
But NWN was still a 2d/ top down 3d hybrid that came before 59 and 59 came before UO. I still miss NWN and UO so I will leave this topic on that note, because those two games had the most of community participation then any to date MMO IMO >.<
Next Gen would mean the game uses advanced technology, example DX10+,destructible surfaces.
All these games that are out or coming out are using dx9c,and offer nothing new to the genre.Tera is not next gen, ffxiv will not be next gen and i am 99% positive that Schilling's game will not be next gen, developers are at a point right now, where they are trying hard to find cheap ways to get their game out, offering as little as they can get away with.
It will take a smart developer, that is willing to give us a next gen game,to break this cheap mould of games we are stuck in,then all the rest may be forced to step it up.
EVERY single game that comes out,is just the same old with a different skin, the genre is extremely stagnant right now.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Consoles always far behind pc so they dont count in next gen.
P.S AC2 released 2002 but way ahead of its time when you look at grafhics engine beats wow hands down.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
The only time I ever see this term used is when developers invoke it to make their game sound like it is something revolutionary. To me it means the same as when my laundry soap is maked "new and improved."
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
The term Next Generation is thrown around a lot these days, if you want a definition of next generation I think the best example lies with the Console Gaming Industry where motion capture and 3D technology is providing a new type of way to enjoy games, and this may even translate into PC in the future, but for now it is a lot easier to implement these new technologies on a uniformed platform base rather than going through the tedium and technical problems of trying to incorporate such technologies into PC where everyones system is made up of different specifications.
I strongly believe Square Enix has an opportunity to use the technologies being released for the PS3 in their upcoming MMO: Final Fantasy 14, and this is where you will find your so called "Next Generation" of MMO's beccause when you can appeal to a market that doesnt have to worry about "Can my computer run this, or will I have to fork out another few hundred bucks just to keep up to date?" - then you will be able to create games which are catered to a larger audience thus increasing the developers income to further imporve their games via patches and expansions, keeping the content new and fresh and keeping players engaged in what they have to offer.
TERA is certainly an MMO to watch, for the sole fact that their MMO is very action orientated but they are also planning to make progression through the games content story driven, a design method which has been lacking in a lot of the games as of recent. Do not underestimate the power of having an enriched story spurring your character on to find out "What happens next?". Why do you think single player games sell so well? Because they have excellent Story Telling and Adventure! Now imagine translating that into an MMO game? You will be able to capture a wider audience than your usual MMO-Only crowd.
Part of LOTRO's success was the fact that their game plays like a story, one which the players wanted to explore and uncover chapter by chapter.
Now youre probably asking yourself "How can you possibly keep a story driven MMO persistent, Stories have to end at some point." - And you are right, Stories do have to end at some point, but this is where the power of Lore comes into play, and which is another important fact that games sometimes overlook in their development stages. Granted most Hardcore MMO'ers out there could care less about the Lore of the world they are playing in, but the depth and mystery surrounding the setting in which they are playing in is a major aspect of a game that will allow it to continue making interesting and fun content for it's players.
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.
Not sure I'd class WoW as second gen. More 1.5 Because it didn't really do anything new, and it was, gameplay wise, exactly the same as EverQuest.
Next gen? Closest thing we've had to next gen has been Darkfall to be honest. And it came from an indie company. That's sad. With all their billions you think Blizzard would be able to innovate.
Tera is nothing new. Everything its doing has been done by Darkfall already.
Also, having a single player storyline in an MMO is such a stupid idea.
Also, having a single player storyline in an MMO is such a stupid idea.
I am sorry you feel that way, as you're missing out in one of gamings major aspects by ignoring the storyline and lore of a world.
I can understand not everyones enjoys a story, and they would rather just hone their skills in a competative environment, and to those players, I would suggest exploring games like Global Agenda, though a lot of people disspute the fact whether it is truly an MMOG and not anything more than a giant lobby of instanced PVP hubs.
You should ask yourself why you go to the Movies to watch actors displaying emotions and telling a story.
I know I have come out a movie theatre more than once and gone "That was an awesome movie, I wish I could do those things or live in a world like that sometimes".

Nothing wrong with having a storyline. You could chose to ignore it as you wished. Story line = more money from people switching from single players games to MMORPG's. Maybe a bad idea to you, but not to me or the companies. (Expecially the companies)
Personaly, which isn't fact, I would consider a next gen MMORPG to lets say look and play like Trailers we see (example> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-x-XXtwpgk ), to me when a game or MMORPG looks and feels like that I would consider it truly Next Gen. Till then most games I just consider slightly updated from the former games.
It does seem that most games with slightly update feature's or graphics are considered next gen, not to me though.

Problem with linear storylines in MMORPGs is that you would have to instance everything and focus on the SINGLE player. Its the antithesis of MMORPG. In an MMORPG you're supposed to make your own story as your LIVE in the virtual world. Not have a single player game with a chat box tagged on.

No one said that MMORPG's arn't allowed to put a OPTIONAL on storylines.
Lol tav i was only joking no need to edit, it's a good sig >=)
And while i think combat mechs are the most important aspect of an mmo as that is how you obtain "most" things and what you will be doing 80-90% of the time, it is definately important to have a good crafting system and social activities in the mix.
EQ2 still had the best crafting imo.
The main reason I miss EQ2.
Update: Looks like Vindictus (AKA Mabinogi Heroes in Korea) has crafting as well. (Very few videos on it though.)
next gen mmo is wat developers want you to think it wil be for you lolz. There are no next gen mmos worth only dragon nest other sux. There is lack of sci-fi mmos and all dumb devs only make are oriental style like (Perfect world company) or any other with lame sword and shield/mage etc classes. Its boring and its stupid.Star wars mmo simply sux only wil sell cause the name not the game itself.
DF & Mortal tried to be next gen but they wound up being stiff's when it came to game mechanics. Crappy coders can kill a game designers dream real quick IMO.
