Hey there,
This is my Theory of the scheduled release of FFXIV, this is an opinion, not sure if it was brought up previously but ohh well here it goes.
The current Alpha stage as stated by SE is about 20% of game content, now I'm not sure if they are adding more to it for beta.
SE and FFXI have a habbit of releasing some content VIA expansions/updates, followed by more content 3-5 months later. A good example of this is the whole Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion, as well as the Mini expansions that followed, I believe they will be doing the same thing with this game hence the early release date. as far as the PS3 release is consirned I don't have any idea why they would delay soo much as I am wanting to play on PS3. again this is pure speculation, feel free to voice your opinions!
Thanks.

Because the PS3 runs on linux, and it's made every attempt for multi-platform games to release on time for it hard.

All the content released at...release in japan for ff11 was REALLY lame. Early nation mission etc. When it released in the US it included the zilart expansion which added alot more and waaaaay better content.. at least in terms of missions quest and so on.
I kind of agree with you that the release of ff14 will be similar and what we get at release will be horirble compared to what we get a year after it..but I guess every mmo is like that...
They doing exactly the same thing they did with FFXI. PC version first and the console version second.
How much player testing has this game gone through ? Is it me or does this game seem to be going really fast in regards to alpha > launch.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
your not alone. atleast i feel that the leap they did from alpha to beta was fast.
i have hopes that they will do just fine.
I'm not in any of the tests but from what ive seen/read they are only testing combat / crafting and that kind of stuff. Even tho they have all their cutscenes and missions etc done I don't think its actually avaliable to the testers but it is there and finished.
I think they just spawn boss type monsters out in middle of nowhere for people to test the fights without giving away all the storyling and other things that go along with it.
The developers keep saying things like only 20% of whats done is avaliable to testers and so on..I'm assuming meaning its done but not actualyl avliable to them because weve seen all these ingame and out of game cutscenes in trailers...
probably when it gets into late closed beta and open beta we will actually be able to see those kinds of things? maybe..
Still waiting for my beta invite :
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai:
"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"
That pretty much sums it up.....stupid $ony and their arrogance!
They are doing things very differently than most MMO's. Allow me to explain.
First of all, they created the Alpha version of the game. It is a very barren product, and only a shadow of what the retail version will be like. They did it like this because the development of this game, and many Japanese games in-fact, happens horizontally. That means every feature and system in the game is being developed simultaneously.
That means the game will be unplayable for a long time, but as it gets closer to the release there will be a Lot of updates since every single feature is being further changed, improved and fleshed out.
Now, as the testers got to play the Alpha version, S-E had already begun working on the Beta version where a lot of things were changed. However, because the developers create systems horizontally the Beta would have been unplayable for the testers for a long time. That's where the Alpha version comes in. They used that version to let the testers give feedback and with that feedback the Beta version started shaping up. If the testers said that combat pace is poor, SE would change that for the Beta. If they said system X was poorly explained, they would implement a better tutorial for the Beta.
Now, 3 months after the Alpha testing started the Beta version is finally in a playable state. Thus the Alpha testing can end and Beta testing can begin. Due to the horizontal progression of the final product, we will see further great improvements within these 3 last months, and the retail version will most likely be just as different as the transition from Alpha to Beta will be.
In the end since the Beta production started about 3 months ago, SE has had around 6 months to work on it once the retail version hits the shelves. That's pretty much the basic length for a Beta version, so I wouldn't be worried. Of course delays might happen and release date gets pushed back, but the 3 month period is plenty of time to iron things out.
It's not about final testing and only fixing bugs. New systems are being created and existing systems are being heavily modified as we speak. You will see what I mean once we get our hands on the final product.
Very well said
Not to mention, SE has a very robust in-house testing team, plus they've been known to hire professional testers as well, both of which they've done and continue to do for FFXI. So there is a crap ton of additional testing being done, behind the scenes that we just never hear about.
How long did it take to develop the game?
Don't forget that the game was also being developed under the name "Rapture" for years and that they are using their own crystal tools software to develop the game. Having their own already developed software which they used to create FFXIII can go a looong way in speeding up development...
