Death is never a cure for anything not even in online games.

All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

    @ Silas26

Hackers/botters exist everywhere, in every game mode, yet that doesn't prevent people from playing PvP games. :/

Repeated content is boring. This is what happens with perma death:

Make it to level 3, die.

Redo content for levels 1-3. Make it to level 5. die.

Redo content for levels 1-3 for the THIRD time, redo content for levels 4 and 5 for the SECOND time.

Make it to level 10. Die. Redo content for levels 1-3 for the FOURTH time, and for levels 4 and 5 for the THIRD time, and for levels 6-10 for the SECOND time.

    You get the picture.

Having "children" or "relatives" doesn't change this in any way.

You either start all over again, and you redo content as stated above.

OR, you start with the same stats you had, which means it's not "permadeath" it's just a name change. Why change your name every time you die, if you keep stats and gear? That's silly in the extreme, and means I'm just making up names all the time for no good reason.

I'm Joe The adventurer. Die. Now I'm Boe. Die. Now I"m Moe. Die. Now I'm Sloe. Why?

Also, every game has permadeath if the player wants it. Want permadeath? As soon as one of your characters dies, delete them. Don't pass on your items or loot to other toons, don't sell what you have for cash to put in shared banks, etc. Just immediately log out of a game, delete the toon that just died, and start all over. Voila! Instant permadeath.

The first motivation to play "perma-death style" is to increase difficulty for the players. This is just an illusion.

With perma-death you set up a penalty for dying. But perma-death won't address the meta-gaming issue. The right party setup and a min/maxed build will still make playing the game easy. Besides, most perma-death gameplay was with static groups (at least as I met it).

It depends on the a game if perma-death would be a viable (or sound) playstyle. Don't waste your time with games that focus too much on item progression.

If you find a game without extreme item progression then you'd face the problem of an in-game auction house. Buy some decent equipment and you reduce the challenge of the content (in addition to meta-gamin). At this point you run into the problem that the game developers can't deliver enough content.

Besides. Even in PnP you didn't really have perma-death. You could always bring dead player characters back (although for a certain price). Provided you didn't do something really stupid like jumping into a volcano (although there would be a means to bring back the player character via reincarnation which would revive the player character as a different race or class which would mean a totally different persona).

To all of you who contributed to the thread thank you.

Some of the ideas are amazing and warrant further thought. Andromedus1, the reincarnation idea is awesome.

To those who worry of lag death, that is a perfectly understandable reason to see permadeath as unviable as of today's standards. Hopefully as games progress and the internet gets faster, this problem will be eliminated altogether.

Because that's too easy and makes sense.  They don't really want to just have permadeath for themselves, they want to impose it on everyone else so everyone else is miserable.  They, like a lot of groupers who post here, want everyone to have to play their way, like it or not, to somehow validate the playstyle.

Yes, it is as idiotic as it sounds.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Just like you want everyone to play your way? You talk like there is only one MMO available at a time. If some people want a perma-death game then they should be allowed to want one. Just because you think perma-death would be retarded doesn't mean it is, and doesn't mean other would not enjoy it. Don't be selfish.

Play their way in which current MMO you are playing in?

Why does it matter if an MMO is made to try and cater perma death in a balanced demeanor?, its not going to end WoW or any other game witht hat playstle.

Plus this is not a discussion about a future IP, it is just a debate on the success of such as mechanic taking place.

IMO the reason I'll never play a game with Perma Death I can sum up in two words - Leroy Jenkins.

Or the gm could just devise a reasonable way to bring the player back.

I never did permanent death in my campaigns. There was no point. Players like their characters and get attached to them. So if they died they would eventually be brought back and it was then made part of the campaing quest for the week or even month.

Characters are brought back to life all the time in sci-fi or fantasy novels and books.

The choice to play "permadeath" is a very personal choice that has to make sense and feel natural and organic to the individual player. Whether it's for "realism" or to add another lash at the back of the player that they think is necessary.
