Burned on WoW, tried EQ2

BoldgrimBoldgrim Member UncommonPosts: 69

I bought WoW the day it came out.  I started to play right away and have been playing it a lot since then.  But I lost interest in the game, too much of a good thing I guess.  I decided to try EQ2 after seeing their add.  I have been playing non stop since then.  But I decided not to pay for an extra month, other than the one that comes with the inital purchase.  I managed to get a wizard level 35 and a few other low level characters.

I decided not to continue because I just couldn't enjoy it.  Something was (is) missing in this game.  But I really wanted to give it a try.  I don't know what it is but I had a lot more fun in WoW or in AO for that matter.  Of course this is just my opinion, I'm sure some think EQ2 is the best thing since slice bread.  But even with all the stuff they added (as the add says) just doesn't cut it for me.

The Matrix online is coming tomorrow.  I think I'm gonna give that try, see how I like it.  As any other moved from WoW to EQ2?  What was your feeling?

The fact that you're playing non-stop makes a mmo boring..
So I guess you'll find MxO boring after a while too

Maybe you are just burnt out on fastasy-base MMOs or MMORPGs.  I am at the point where MMORPGs are just not original anymore and about to give up on them.

How many times can you kill mobs, collect thier loot, sew a skirt, etc. til you figure out what a waste of time it was.

What made EQ1 a long lasting success was the fact, that you could do all that and raid with your guild or alliances the tougher mobs.  But again this also gets boring and very time comsuming so its not for all.

My two favorite games of all time are EQ1 and UO.  Nothing else comes close to them.  However I have been hearing alot of postive feedback on how SWG has improved and seems alot like UO which is skill-based instead of the cookie-cutter class junk.  I will most likely get SWG really soon and give Matrix Online a shot too.

You need to abandon the "fantasy" genre.Come play EvE there is no game like it on the market ATM.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

I did the opposite. I started with EQ2, got to lvl 32 with my dirge and started having trouble finding reasons to log in anymore. i dont know what it is with that game but it just didnt keep my attention like EQ1 did. So i decided to pick up WoW, even though i hated it in beta. almost 2 months later i am lvl 42 and still loving it. Really fun game i must say. im sure ill get bored with it eventually, but it grabs me by the jimmies way harder than EQ2 ever could.

As for playing EVE. it is it's own game. nothing else like it...but the real time skill system, to me, is the dumbest idea ever. i love skill based games, but personally i would like to put the time in and get the reward "in-game" rather than having to wait 1-3 days for my skills to raise. everything else about EVE is great, their skill system is lame IMO.

Eve Sucks. Most boring space game I've ever played. Then again I'm a firm believer that spaceship games should be First Person Sims not 3rd person point and clicks. I'm sorry but if I'm flyin' a ship I better be able to dodge, weave, duck, dive, flip and do a roll if I have to. Can't do that in Eve it's all based on some lame skills you have to earn... BLECH!

    That said...

So far I've been very impressed with both EQ2 and WOW as far as fantasy MMO's go. Both are very gripping.

And, as someone else mentioned: Any game you play "nonstop" is going to become boring VERY rapidly. If you seriously hit level 35 and had other toons up in their teens then you are spending way way way way too much time in game. Go out, get fresh air, breath, get a girlfriend, play some football. There is more to life than the next level you get on your toon in some game.

No game is gonna stand up to that kind of level grinding. Takes ALL the fun out of it.

My path was the opposite.. from EQ2 to WoW.. and had the exact same reaction.. it is not you.

These offerings, as I mentioned elswhere, are excercises in illusion.  The MMORPG idea, in it's purest form, has amazing potential.  That potential, to be blunt, not only is not being reached, but is being hindered by most game company execs.

That is why you have the the drift.. why not only you, but millions of people float from game to game to game to game..The grind and the float.

The sad thing is that it does not have to be like this.   The answers are there.. being shouted by many people.. and is falling on open ears and closed minds.

Sadly this reminds of a fable.. "We listened in the distance and heard the pounding of hooves, and looked in the shadowy moonlight and saw a beast with four legs, a wild mane and knew it was a horse.. until it came within the light of vision and we saw.. it was a Zebra."

    Regards ~

The matrix online is fun. i love it a lot.

WoW sucks with its crap pvp, and EQ II doesnt even have pvp, but the matrix has FvF (faction vs faction, like in DAOC).

from pvp, which looks like you would be good at since you level fast, its fun.

i heard the estimated time to hit 50 is about 6-8 hours a day  for a whole year. which is good yet bad at the same time.

    MxO is FUN.

Personally, I have a hard time playing a game that doesn't have an engaging story, and doesn't make me feel like what I'm doing has an impact on that story.

That's the great thing about MxO. I met a couple characters from the movie today. Morpheus was sighted in town last night, and one of the player guilds is actively hunting him....

You get the point. There's SOMETHING GOING ON (tm), and the players are a part of it. It gives it meat, instead of just meaningless grinding/pharming you get with other games.

The beta was a differant story, though. It got kinda boring...but since launch, and the story elements started (along with teh CONSTANT events) it holds your interest like a good book.

Good luck on your search, though. :)

Playing both myself. Both have their charms and are good for different times for me(EQ2 over weekends,WoW during work days).

Problem with EQ2 is it follows the old style view of mmorpg - gratification at higher level.

Basically the game gets into its own at level 40 and becomes amazing after mid 40s.Problem is they failed to realise this is the age of instant gratification which is what WoW offers.Right or wrong -when making a mmorpg nowadays to be successful u got to make it easy or rewarding from the word go.

I myself find out that WoW is good fun even if i only got 1 hour to play which is great for weekdays.

Actually there are several MMO's that allow you to impact the environment.
DAOC: players directly impact the game by conquering territory (or losing it). This impacts everyone in the game as factions gain/lose abilities etc based on certain things. Pretty neat concept.

Horizons: As players progress in the game and do things the environment of the game changes, pushing back evil or having it take over areas. Pretty interesting though it hasn't reached it's full potential yet. I suspect this game is going to wind up collapsing if they don't get the boredom factor under control.

AO: Another faction war where you can impact the environment by conquering territory, etc.

AC2: Yet another game where players impact the environment.

As to MXO: The only way you are gonna like MXO is if you liked the Matrix movies. If you hated the movies (as I did) you won't like the game. Sorry it's just too cyberpunk for me.

There are dozens of games out there. NO GAME, I don't care how much you want to say it, NO GAME is going to withstand multiple hours a day of grinding no matter how 'fun' it is. Because grinding, by it's very nature, sucks the life out of any game. EQ2 has a wonderful storyline that's fun to delve into. If you're level grinding you'll never see that storyline, however. Because, frankly, if you hit 35 in a month, there's no way you spent a lot of time doing quests, which is where you learn the storyline. Similar story to WoW (though it has a bit less of a story/plot line in it).

Personally I'm watching Middle Earth Online and praying it does eventually come out because it looks like it's going to be pretty awesome. However, up to now it's lookd like it's just going to be vaporware. I did notice that Turbine has taken over the liscence and they've done good things with AC and AC2 so I have renewed hope that MEO is going to come through.

I recently moved from EQ2 to WOW.  Unlike many, I'm not willing to say I will never return to EQ2 again.  That game requires many improvements however, most important of which is the addition of fun.   A marvelous invention it is, but I am not convinced it is fun.

WOW, on the other hand, is a ton of fun!  Forget all the details about buying, selling, economy, grouping, customization, etc.  WOW is just plain fun.  I look forward to playing it and I have a good time when I do.  As a former EQ1 fanatic, I really wish I could say that about EQ2.  I just can't and for the time being remain disappointed.  Maybe things will turn around there in the future, at which point I might return.  PvP required for long-term addiction I believe.   Public comments such as "We have no plans to implement PvP/PvP servers at this time" do not cut it.  Especially when you consider that EQ2 is a grind and there must be some reward for all that boring effort.   Going head to head with other players might be such a reward.

Until that time, I love WOW.  I may always love WOW.  WOW rocks.

Unless you've acutally moved from EQ1 to something else... I suggest EQ1. It is a completely different game from EQ2, and MUCH better. IMHO. It already has what everyone else is trying to copy, including its sequel.

I think what these newer MMORPG's lack, in comparison to great games like EQ1, is content. By content, I don't just mean more dungeons and more monsters, but tons of the "little things" waiting to be discovered in a game world.

In EQ1, you could toss a sword onto the ground and it always pointed north. Now that doesn't up your skills or give you experience points, but it was neat. Someone took some time and thought to add that into the game. The little undiscovered stuff is a big part of what breathes life into these games. There are still things in EQ1 (and I mean the older zones) that occasionally surprise me. Remember the hidden corridors in Felwithe? Not much purpose (except as a safe spot for old-style twinkling), but kind of cool.

These newer games are just too easily uncovered, and after a bit there is no more mystery to them.

If I could sum up the successful recipe of EQ1, it might be as follows:

40% RPG (grinding levels, adventuring, etc)
40% Chatroom (talking with others during downtime, zone chat)
20% Myst-like puzzles (i.e., figuring out quests, discovering hidden passages, etc)

The newer games focus more on the RPG aspect and not enough on the social (chat) or mystery (wonder of the world) aspects of gameplay. They are simply games, not game worlds.

Yeah, we have faction wars, and "Hostile" servers, which are the PvP servers.

There have been hints (well, heavy hints) that Neo's truce is going to collapse soon. All-out war is just around the corner. The events taking place April 4th and on should have a lot to do with it.

Get involved! In this game, players DO make a huge differance in the story line.

    Matrix Movies = Suckage
    Therefore Matrix Game = Suckage

    To me

On the other hand, if you actually liked the Matrix movies then the game will probably be fun.

    Quite true
But who ever heard of a frigate or capitol ship with only 1 or 2 guns? Matter of fact who ever heard of a frigate or capitol ship that mined asteroids and had only 1 passenger/pilot?

I don't like EVE. Combat is so basic it's not even funny. Even group combat is cludgy at best. The graphics are fantastic, the sound is great. The realism is quite good as well. Flying up to a space station is just flat out amazing.

But the overall game is boring. It's not my style. Star Wars Galaxies JTL is far more fun.

Well I have not played WoW but I had the same problem with EQ2.  It was a fun game for a while and I didn't really play it non stop but I thought that they quests were just a little boring after doing them so many times.

Lineage 2 was a great game also but I played that for a while and that game had a terrible grind at least for me.

I think a game with some fighting on your own would be fun but also it needs to have quests that have you fight more and for more exp.

I am planning to play Meo when it comes out when ever that shall be lol.  If you are waiting for the game as I am then you will get that.

SWG is the best I've found that has a mix of this. Space combat is pure 1st person combat that relies mostly on your skill. Your "level" only impacts what type of ship and equipment you can have, which DOES make it easier to kill your enemy, but if you're good enough it doesn't matter :). On the ground it's more of a standard RPG where some personal cleverness helps alot but your characters skills are more important (kind of a 180 from space). Also, in both scenarios there are multiple quests that yield decent rewards/xp/cash.

Until MEO comes out I'd recommend SWG over just about anything out there. I do like EQII for a change of pace, however, especially right now while they're doing the combat and class revamp in SWG.

Kinda simular here started with EQ since the begining stopped playing after EQ2 came out, realized that EQ2 wasn't for me anymore so a bunch of us moved to WOW,had loads of fun for awhile but even this one wasn't keeping my interest.

So at this time i have been playing several Free Games and some RPG text based games (reminds me of my MUD days) atleast till the next games i am waiting on come along.

    Which are listed below.

Guild Wars -Unsure here will most likely try it out.image

DnL - A definate possibility image

Vanguard - Could be definate Winnerimage

Irth Online - This one i am keep most watch on already accepted for Beta2 here,Very promiseing skill based game.image

One other to keep eye on is MEO which got new blood with Turbine taken over all rights to developement from Vivendi.image comeing out of its ashes.

I'll agree with that earlier comment in that the Matrix movies really sucked. And the fact that the movies sucked so bad is what's keeping me from playing the online game. I'm keeping an eye out on everyone's feedback before I decide to jump in.  I'm getting tired of buying sucky games (ie EQ2). It gets costly.

Dont be afraid of the Dark. Be afraid of what's in it.

Why did you buy EQ2 if you didn't like it? The Free Trial was out within just a few weeks of it's release. I *always* wait for a free trial of any MMO. Since you can't return them *at all*. With a standard game you can usually return them within the first couple days. But since MMO's require you to 'burn' the registration key to try them t here's, literally, no way to return the software once you log in the first time.

Thus I *always* wait for a free trial anymore. Got burned WAY too many times in the past (horizons, Lineage, AO)
