I never thought id say this, but buy a mac.

My rig is about 6 months old, but I have an i7, 12 gigs of ram, 1000watt sup, two 5870's crossfire, crazy aftermarket cooling system and I run nasty benchmarks with 3dmark and my girlfrioend can open up 4 progs and 6 HDMI movies playing at the same time on her mac book with no hic-ups and my comp can barely open word pad and photoshop at the same time.(sarcasm of course)

    Widows sucks..

If it wasn't for the vid cards i'd buy a mac.

Thanks for the input, bud. But no MAC for me, man. I've heard they were multi-tasking beasts, but I have never been interested in MACs or mostly anything Apple.

Interesting; I used Mac OSX extensively during my years of high school, and never found anything particularly attractive about its operation, which isn't to say that you're wrong, but I'd be curious to know what you find better about it, exactly, compared to, say, Windows 7 (and is it enough to warrant huge additional hardware costs?).

It's not often I see much from the Mac side of the spectrum.

The only laptop I use often is my Macbook, all's well to come home to the big kick-ass desktop, but on the road I find the Macbook to be extremely efficient. I can open up 10+ programs add a second monitor and barely have any response/memory issues. It's a very well coded OS that can manage itself with more dynamic usage. Ask me what games I have on here though? None, it's an obsolete platform when it comes down to that. Apple not having support for anything except what THEY put in their machines really does get frustrating eventually. Part of what makes them so great is that they know what they're doing with the hardware they have, part of what makes them so limited is they're hardasses on opening the platform. The top of the line MBPro is just now moving to a GT 330M, which is quite a joke in my opinion. If you're willing to sacrifice some freedom (closed machine modification) a Mac will get you the VERY best out of what hardware it runs, it uses to full capacity the scope of technology it's given.

Ultimately both PCs and Macs do really have areas that make them sparkle in the crowd, I've not once regretted either my PC decision or my Mac purchase, they both make up for each other's flaws : /

Agreed, jammer. I think it is a preference, but one is not greater than the other. But are good based on their certain aspects. Good reply.

Catamount or anyone got a recommendation for a CPU heatsink/cooler for my AMD Phenom X4 955?

I feel like getting a good one for a decent price. I was searching online and there were two I was looking at. But I am open to suggestions.

COOLER MASTER RR-H101-22FK-RA 80mm Long life sleeve bearing CPU Cooler - $14.99

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103075

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm Ceramic CPU Cooler - $27.99

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16835185125

The second one has like 2,200 reviews and %70 were positive, so I figured it had to be doing something good for most of them. But as I mentioned, I am open to suggestions.

Just to make a remark from my latest reply. I found a CPU fan/Heatsink combination that I am liking and the price is within my range for what I would pay for one at the moment.

    Here it is!

    Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler - $34.99

Switched to the Corsair H-50 and loving every minute. Very easy to install, currently got i7 930 at 4.2ghz and temps are in low 40's. At stock they are less than 30c.

On another build we have the XIGMATEK Dark Knight-S1283V on a Phenom in an Antec 300 and is performing very well.

Any future builds I will do I will be definately looking at the H-50 again or future derivatives simply because:

    1. Quiet - hardly any sound AT all

    2. No dust to worry about

The Thermalright TRUE is the best aircooler I'm aware of, hands down, but that said, you can get the Xigmatek Dark Knight that Amazingavery linked to for half the price, and it's still one of the better coolers out there.

Edit: Looking over reviews, I take that back. It looks like the Titan Fenrir is about the best air cooler out there right now, and it doesn't look all that expensive, either (around $50)

  • AstrostexAstrostex Member UncommonPosts: 38

Hmm, would that XIGMATEK Dark Knight-S1283V fit on my CPU?

Because I am thinking about snatching it, since alot of people said it was really good.

  • CatamountCatamount Member Posts: 773

It should fit an AM3 CPU without issue, but, again, reviews seem to indicate that the Titan Fenrir would be a much better buy. It's only a few dollars more (the Dark Knight runs in the low $40s, the Fenrir runs in the high $40s)

If you want to go all out I got the V8 coolermaster awesomeness.

I have it on my 955 and it rocks my socks off. Not to mention it's baller as F***. Seriously.

It's around 50$ Retail. The only con is you need a large case.

Titan Fenrir looks good. Since I am buying all my newegg components at one time, I'll after to get it a few days afterwards since Newegg doesn't sell it.

Just purchased the rig, haha. Nice chump of change.

But I had to replace the corsair xm3 ddr3 1600 mhz with G.skill ripjaws DDR3 1333 mhz, since the motherboard I chose doesnt do 1600 mhz. Can overclock it to 1600 mhz, though. Wierd.
