Please dont flame me because I like to play solo alot. Its not that I dont like to group but my Job is a 24/7 on call ( towtruck driver) so alot of times I need to go in a moments notice. Now, 4 or 5 days a month I get off where I have no worry of calls, but Id hate to be limited just to those times to play.
So asking can some progress be made is solo play? Not asking if I can avoid group play to max level or anything but will I be able to do some thingd and still have fun, level a little and make s small amount of progress in the game? I like this genre. I hate with a passion PVP so this game basic design appeals to me.
Thank for any information.

Seems like it will be solo friendly that's what they were stressing quite a bit.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.

At E3 they showed us some Guildleve quests and you have the option of doing them in any groups size from solo to raid, and anything in between.
As for quests you get at NPCs and story quests, im not too sure. I doubt square would block off story content for players though.
FFXIV was made with casual and solo players in mind unlike FFXI.

Yup, like they said grouping was deemphasized, it will be very important. However, it's not to the extent that you can't level up without it. Also, like SE and other people stated, you can definitely solo this time around. Moreover, there will be lots of content for hardcore raiders, people who like to casually group, small group, and solo.
The combat mechanics are really created with group play in mind, so you won't be able to fully enjoy the game if you have to solo it..
But if you can group 4-5 times a month, that's better than nothing I guess .
Compared to FFXI, I would agree that FFXIV will probably be more geared towards the solo player. But FFXI made solo advancement through the game almost completely impossible. I think that FFXIV will still be considered a solo-unfriendly game compared to other current MMOs. You will be able to at least accomplish something in an hour-long solo session, but unlike other games it's unlikely that you'll accomplish as much as you would have in a group.
I don't mind that they are having solo in mind i just hope there is real incentive to play with others.. I actually liked that FFXI wasn't solo friendly but I understand the need for it. (For example FFXI would be better off at this point of it's life if it was more solo friendly imo.)
I agree with the taru (NatuXatu). Being able to solo is great, but I hope at least the missions still require a group otherwise we might as well be playing singleplayer games...
err to clarify, when I said missions I meant the storyline progression like in ff11 with BCNMS etc.. not your run of the mill quests like wow and every other mmo.
Square-Enix has stated that the game will be solo friendly, as well as have a strong emphasis on group play. I personally prefer group play, as it promotes a stronger community. Solo games usually end up with an elitist and selfish community whos only desire is to be considered "l33t."
Guildleves will be solo capable, as well have many options for group play. I do believe that many of the storyline quests will be designed with groups in mind.

I doubt you'll be able to kill everything in the game by yourself. However the main questing mechanism in the game is scaleable. Meaning that you can choose to run a solo version of a quest up to an epic scale of a quest. Of course your choice on difficulty would impact the reward. So yes you should be able to solo quite a bit but it will very desirable in most cases to bring a few friends along.
The game is definitely soloable, guildleves and mobs can be killed when running solo. Parties may actually be less desirable for leveling since the game utilizes a physical level and class level and certain classes only gain class experience when hitting the mob so in a party it may lead to reduced chances to hit. Hopefully beta will reveal more information.
