What if there were a tongue in cheek mmo, such as Army of Darkness?

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630

Most mmos so far as I can see are fairly serious. WoW has a lot of humor added but overall it's still pretty standard fantasy.

I think it would be fun to have a fantasy mmo that is tongue in cheek. The movie Army of Darkness would be a great example of what I have in mind.

You could still quest, explore, fight etc. but it would have more comedy woven in and the story could be hilarious.

There have been single player games that have done this, like A Bard's Tale.  But I haven't seen any mmos.

Thoughts?

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

OMG Army of Darkness MMO? While I know it would suck, because it's awesome-ness could never be captured. I just wanna run around and emote.

    "Suck my Boomstick"

    Hail to the king baby!

Their "tongue in cheek" comes from "breaking the 4th wall".

Every time your character makes a snappy comeback at the narrator your average player is going to scream about how his immersion is broken.

As long as Bruce is involved, I'd preorder.  Seriously.

I second that notion. I'm not one of those weird ass, follow Bruce around and sex him up fans. But I think, for a B Actor, he is definitely the shit. Plain and simple.

But as an MMO like that, it would fail because trolls and people constantly holding it to the tier/model its based on. And when sequels/remakes come out, GENERALLY they fail, pretty epic at that.

So i can't truly see a tongue-in-cheek being done without a metric load of complaints from fanbois and general whiners.

Sure, a Evil dead or Discworld MMO would be rather fun.

The only MMO thta have some dark humor right now is WAR and they actually cut out most of the RPG and tabletop games funny stuff.

I play a Evil dead MMO. Really, I would.

Come on, what possible complaint could they have about a Bubba Ho-Tep MMO? :)

I'd be out stalking mattresses so i can kill them and sell their rather polite, good-parenting carcasses to the local bedroom warehouse...

An Alice in wonderland style mmo would be trippy.

Like anything else it would depend on the quality of the writing and of the game.I would have to disagree with you aobut WoW though...It starts off well and interesting lore wise but quickly devolves into pop culture reference humor ranging from obvious to obscure and lore and good plots fall to the wayside.Of course that's just my opinion.

There was one, it was called Dungeon Runners and it got shut down due to lack of interest.

    Dungeon Runners

It was a tongue in cheek MMO that made fun of everyrthing that has to do with MMO's including itself

Unfortunatly it didn't make enough to sustain itself and was canceled at the start of this year

Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?
