Hello MMORPG.com! I'm JDirectorate, a new user! I am curious weather or not I should play this game. I played World of Warcraft but my problems were: Not being able to chose which class to focus on, wanted to be them all and do everything. (I eventually made a 50 Retadin.) Also the game got immensely boring at level 50 and I couldn't stand anymore it's cartoon-like graphics. However Atria is a beautiful enviorment which I would like to control my Avatar in. Currently I am deciding right now if I want Atria or Hyboria. I think that the reason WoW got boring is I wanted to be 80 right now and I may have gotten tired from Dungeon Finder and not wanting the rinse-and-repeat quests. So my question is, is Aion good for me? How many hours of grind is there from 1-50? Would I be better off with Age of Conan's Hyboria? All answers are appreciated, thank you!
JDirectorate out.

Both games feature an intial leveling stint before the class you chose at character startup starts to show it's true use.
In Aion you have to get to level 10 and pass the initial zone to get your wings and unlock the better arsenal you should have had at the start. It got me to run it four times in order to test the classes themselves, and burnt me out way early.
AoC does the same thing to level 16 or so, then you can choose to leave Tortage or finish the destiny quest, but in it's defense, Tortage is the most awesome part of the game (at least at first), and there some differences is what you will experience based on your class archetype - this is only your 'desitny questline' though, and the rest is pretty static.
In all, I played both and figure AoC for the better game overall.... but Aion does have sexier models, and that's all it takes for some (even with the lack of full frontal).

Really? Lol I've play each class in Age of Conan to about 5-13 maybe I should try to get my Barbarian to level 13. Thanks, I'll patch AoC up and try it again.

If you were over it that early in the game, then I don't recommend it. Like I said, Tortage was the best part of the game, and if you did it X amount of times, only to tire of the game yet have never left the noobzone, the rest is going to discourage you. The later content is not as tight, in terms of narrative *and* concept.
The boss fights they updated post-launch are awesome though. If you hate tank-and-spank, you'll love the kind of tactics needed to down some bosses in the midgame. Best thing AoC has going for it imo, besides melee combat.

I didn't get bored with it just my school lifestyle couldn't fit it in. It's summertime I have tons of time.

You wanting to be any class at any time is a crutch you will have to battle with anywhere you go in the current mmorpg world. There are games where you can move between all the "classes" more or less freely, but it takes time (EVE online).
FFXIV (not out just yet) might have what you're looking for in regards to being able to play the classes you like best on the fly, not that I know exactly how their character development system works -- but the gist of it is you don't need to reroll to take up a new 'class'; as your one character can learn it all.
It probably takes longer to reach maxlvl in AoC and Aion than it does in WoW right now. So if you're struggling with the relatively fast grind to 80 in WoW, you might want to ask yourself why you want to play MMORPGs in the first place.
Finding a good guild in either of these games is probably the thing that is most conducive to you staying ti'll maxlvl. If you're the kind of guy that wants to take on the world alone (judging by your need to 'be them all'), you're going to have a very limited degree of progress; both personally and ingame.
It's unnatural for most to select one extreme and stick to it, as it's been proven most people go for the "middle path" when possible. So take the selection of one type of character as a personal challenge if you feel that your urge to 'be them all' is holding you back.
1. AION is one of the most visually stunning games out there right now, period.
2. Like another poster said, wanting to try everything is something that is going to be an issue in most any MMORPG you try. Deciding what classes are going to be worth your main focus is going to be something pivotal to you enjoying a game, as if you don't make these decisions you are likely to think that the severe grind in AION (it is severe) is worse than it really is.
3. All things considered, AoC has had more problems in its history than AION however it did make a bit of a comeback. At the very least it seems that the gave invites people to play it far more than it did initially, or at least that is how it seems to me from reading people's posts.
4. If you were bored of WoW by level 50 I don't think that AION is going to hold your interest. All games have mechanics that are incredibly repetitive and we'll stick with one game over another because we find that repetition fun. Personally, I found WoW to be fun and with all that I've read about AION I've found it anything but. Some people really enjoy it though and that's great, however judging from your post I don't think it will fit you.
5. Check out several reviews for AoC and AION to see which would be best for you, however do understand that you shouldn't limit your choice to just these two games.
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain.
(2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
Greeting,
I played World of Warcraft for 3 years, I currently have 4 80s; Paladin, druid, warrior and mage. I recently was burned out of the Forced PVE in wow. I decided I would like to try out something else. Believe or not, Aion is more like a game that I enjoy. I am having fun leveling and for me its good change from wow. The idea of classes and sub classes is really cool. Combat system is more enjoying and the community more friendly. Also In Aion you have more character customization than wow. You can have 100 sorrcers with each of them having different abilities than the others "depending on their stigma".
However, Aion is more complex and if your not into putting thought and hardwork in an mmo, this can hender your progression in Aion.
Overall, for me its a good change or a "breaK" from wow until next Xpac. Good luck!
So I have another question. I know there isn't a Paladin-like class in AoC because it's more dark fantasy, but is there a Melee-er which can heal themselves like a Paladin, I don't need Auras and stuff, just the buffs and heals of a Pally. I have heard mixed reports that the Chanter is, but also the Templar, I'm pretty sick of the easiness of WoW and want something new and challenging. I can totally pump myself over 50 levels.
If you want to play Dawn of War 2 online with me PM me.
I played a Templar up to about level 32-33, and I seem to remember having two self heals by that level. They weren't spammable, I think they had a 60 sec or even greater cooldown, and I remember them healing for about 30% of your health. IIRC, there was also a combo finisher that give you a smaller self heal. Not 100% sure on these, as this was about 4-5 months ago now.
I think cleric would be closer to the more common WoW or EQ-like definiton of the paladin class, in the sense that clerics can wear chainmail armor and are the main healer class in the game, giving you access to a wide range of healing spells.
If I may make a suggestion, assuming you're looking for a PvP-oriented game (since you're asking about Aion), and you enjoy the paladin class archetype, you should try Warhammer Online, they have an unlimited trial, and classes like the Warrior Priest or even the Disciple of Kaine might be right up your alley. This is assuming you haven't played Warhammer Online yet, of course.
Aoc has a melee healer not a paladin but more fun to play imo. The class i speak of is Bear Shaman, very fun to lvl and in a group. only minus is 1-15 is a bit of a hassle but 25+ is very awesome. 3-4 same lvl mobs at a time makes you feel powerfull.
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
Actually I'm not interested in PvP just PvE and Endgame content.
If you want to play Dawn of War 2 online with me PM me.
ugh.
Well, the pve is "ok". But nothing overly exciting for my taste.
My opinion is that I like the pve as it breaks up the pvp but if you are only in it for the pve then you might find it a bit boring. There are some really nice stories in some of these quests so if you are the type of person who actually reads quests you might like it.
But remember, you will be exposed to some pvp at some time.
My opinion is that the pvp end game is a bit stronger than the pve end game as there aren't a huge amount of raids and the like.
Quite frankly you should just try the game and see for yourself.

Im big into aion so naturaly I would say aion. Although to be honest from the type of game your wanting and describing you want I cant recommend aion. If you losing interest with wow then I doubt aion would hold it any more. In wow at least theres alot of dungeons all the way up to 80, in aion there really isnt all that many dungeons yet. I think maybee all points bulletin might be what you want, or global agenda. Of course those games arn't anything like aoc or aion. Have you given Star wars galaxies a shot? IT breaks away from the theme park genera of mmorpgs and might be something that would hold your interest.
If your losing interest in wow the only fault that lyes with is the developers. Personally im not big into expansions when the devs add patches to the game that could be considered the same thing. They dont do anything special for there games with all these expansions when they could bring new and exciting things to the game. This has an inflation effect on the game when they do this, and like you said, people lose interest in the game. Instead of adding something inovative, they market a expansion and this diminishes the game by raising peoples expectations unjustifiabley. So when players figure out its the same old piece of shit they always have played, they lose interest.
Lord of the rings online, dunegeon and dragons online or darkfall might be something to look into. Fallen earth to is good, lol...Theres alot of games that do break away from wow, just not alot of people play them.
Right now I am playing my level 14 Barbarian in Age of Conan and having fun. I recently did a quest to kill 50 Picts and after I did it I noticed it was just a normal, boring kill some of those guys quest. My question is, what kind of grind is Aion? Is it a bunch of kill some of those guys rinse and repeat quests?
If you want to play Dawn of War 2 online with me PM me.
Yes, exactly the same, except there are fewer of them. You get repeatable quests, usually repeatable 10 times, to kill or collect animal parts.
Yes.
@those saying AoC takes longer than WoW to maxout on; lies. AoC is one of the shortest runs to 80 I've ever seen in a game, and now with the expansion there is more quest content than levels to be had.
Btw OP, you *need to* pick a class and go with it. If you are going to kills those 50 picts X amount of times in AoC and grow bored, you are really, really, really going to hate yourself in Aion.

If you compare the two AoC is much easier to level up than Aion. Once you get into the 40's in Aion you have to really start grinding repeatable quests over and over again. Basically going to the same locations and killing X number of mobs go back to quest giver and repeat. It's about as boring as you could possibly get in terms of leveling up your character. I would have loved Aion much more if there had been more depth to the questing than repetable quest grinding.
On the flip side AoC is almost too quick of a level rise and being able to spend off line levels to me is just absurd. But there are tons of different quests to explore and there is a lot more quest depth than in Aion.
Overall both are good games but both have different appeals to them as well.
I actually didn't mind it at all. It was fun actually, and I might be able to pull through a lot of those, what bothered me though was that other players were killing them, making it a slower process so there were less Picts to kill. In Aion does this happen? I love grouping in MMORPGs, before WoW nerfed it so you only get like 0 XP per kill I tried to group with people on quests all the time. Also, focusing on one class is not a problem anymore I stick to ONE guy, play that ONE guy all the way through, sometimes I just need to find my true class. I actually loved PvP in Runescape, it was fun as hell but I was to scared to risk my full Rune lol. In WoW I absolutely HATED PvP. Battlegrounds should be renamed "Twink Wars" because that's all they are. I love the satisfaction of killing a tough enemy in an MMO. In WoW I dueled all the time for fun. I really want to know, is Aion "Twink Wars"? Can you find an even match rather then a Helluva a lot of Twinks ganking the living shit out of you?
If you want to play Dawn of War 2 online with me PM me.
It's hard to find decent PVP in my experience. The level range for the zones in which you PVP is just far too large to test your skills against similarly geared and leveled opponents. I don't get ganked much, but when I went looking for PVP in my low 30s looking for other low 30s to fight, I found higher levels and twinks. Roll a class with hide is all I can say :P
I would love to try this game out, how big is the download? Can it be paused and resumed at a later time? Does it have a trial? Does anyone have in invite?

Sounds more and more like WAR is more in terms of what you are looking for. Twinking is far less powerful due to XP/renown gain in PvP and the Bolster effect, can't be ganked by people outside your tier due to chicken debuff so always fighting someone within 10 levels of you, there is a fairly fleshed out PvE world with even solo PQs, the PvP is heavily based around grouping and rewarding, and the rate you level is fairly quickly, with most of your time being spent on increasing your renown rank through PvP and city sieges/defenses, as well as active open world and instanced PvP.
Aion, WoW, WAR, and most MMOs more or less share the same style of questing, even the PvP quests are 'Kill X of Y class or rank'. The biggest problem with Aion's PvP is that you can not tell the level of your opponent and you could just as easily attack or be attacked by someone 20 levels higher or lower then you. The Aion grind can be at best tedious, but it does hit you like a brick wall, not as bad as old school FFXI, but not nearly as easy as AoC/WAR.
Aion does have some good things going for it, namely graphically and it may well end up being your thing, but if twinks are indeed something you worry about, I would say WAR is generally something you are looking towards more. Not saying WAR doesn't have it's own issues, but it is another option to keep in mind.
I'll look into WAR and Aion.

They added new colors in 1.9, whenever an enemy player is 11+ levels than you his name is in purple. Whenever he's near your level (+ / - 10 levels) he's red, and whenever you're 11+ levels higher he's brown.
Still 10levels is a big difference, but it's much better than before and ganking is less of a problem than before.
