Everyone keeps bashing voice acting as worthless, but one of the main reasons people skip reading quests is that you are confronted with a wall of text that isn't much fun to read and boils down to, go kill 10 rats out back.  I think Bioware will bring a true story to the game that will be easier to appreciate because instead of sighing and then wading into the wall of text, you can just lean back and take a drink of your coffee while the voice actor spins a tale for you that makes you want to be a part of it.

Now, if the voice over goes something like this, blah blah blah, "Brave adventurer, go forth into the back yard and kill 10 rats to make this land safer!" Then I will probably be reaching for the escape key as well.  However, story is what Bioware does best and I have faith that they will make me care about what is going on.  Then, after that, I will go chill in a capital city with everyone else and show off my cool gear.  :-)

No Vinterkrig, you crack me up. You have conditioned yourself to demonstrate such a negative attitude regarding the game that it seems you are completely partial and delusional. All your negative remarks could as easily be true as they can be false. You assume far too many things and that is what leads to the fallacies within your arguments. I respect that such is your opinion, yet your perspective clearly seems tainted by a "hater's reasoning". You depict no real reason to be dissapointed by the game as your entire notion of its "failures" are completely based on what you assume and not what you know for fact.

Oh, most agreeable, resorting to personal offenses in anything demonstrates no virtue at all. I merely stated that your stand point is questionable due to your conception of the game being so completely distorted by your assumptions.

The "Clone Wars" style models still bother me. I wish they had gone with a different look. I've played through KotOR 1 several different times, all were fun experiences. I enjoyed the story, nothing was better than seeing something like this:

    -= SPOILERS FOR KotOR 1 =-

[Being asked if Revan wants to really join the sith academy, Yuthura asks who his companions are]

Revan: Er... It's nothing , just my slaves.

    [Jolee playing along]

Jolee Bindo: My hearing's not so good. I'm just pleased my nice master doesn't beat me so much anymore, yes sir.

[after giving him a tach gland, Griff wants you to give him money for his wine business]

Griff: You don't know much about business, do you? When you see an opportunity like this, you've gotta go for it. Now, will you give me a thousand credits?

Revan: If you ask me one more time, that tach gland won't be the only freshly-harvested organ around here.

Awesome and funny dark side dialogue is great! I hope there will be things like that. I am worried tha tthe voice actor choices will be limited though, and my character will sound like a douche.

#5) well at least the 5-10% of people that actually read the quests will be happy.

#4) now we can have a annoying little blib of voice while clicking whatever bit of text we see first as we rush through the quests to get to end game.

    #3) there goes grouping.

#2) now i can sit alone in my ship...but hey, at least i got to custamize it.

#1) Bioware is good at single player RPG's.  and as we can see from the insane amount of instances, they obvious have no idea what the MMO stands for.

My assumptions and opinions of the game are mine, as anyone who thinks this game will be amazing are entitled to theirs.  Personal character has come up for no reason multiple times, the defenders of the game in any situation feel the right to be above a person for anything negative to say its rather funny. Personally, I could care less... though you all have your heads up so high that it is funny to me that a "attack on a game" justifies an "attack on a person". This kind of logic fails me.

You failed to comprehend what I stated. I know you are entitled to an opinion. However, that is not to say that such isn't biased or irrational. You propose several arguments against this article's points yet you depict no real support other than your pure imagination or assumptions. What I am stating is that you should, instead of bashing a game for what you assume to it be, get rid of that mentality in order to formulate more comprehensible, rational, and discussion-worthy thoughts. I see no real driving force behind your remarks and I can't fathom why you have created such a negative image of the game within your mind; that is truely beyond me, but not of my concern. I am simply criticizing the way you bash certain aspects of the game that we have yet to truely experience.

Pfff... a lot of bias, nonsensical argumentation and unfounded presumptions in this thread.

My advice: people should first find out  what the game is all about before drawing conclusion, and if you don't much care for the 'RPG' part in MMORPG's, then it's not much likely that SW:TOR is a game for you.

From every Bioware game i've played the story always got me and so did everything else, they just know how to make quality games.  When they took on the KOTOR I was like whoa, this is simply amazing, I could not have been more overjoy with what I was playing.  This team knows how to make a game, more then what you could of thought it could of been and even more.  There going to the next level and doing an MMO, I know they have the love for Single player games, but with what there doing here I believe they will wonderfully.

There putting in full voice, I mean this is huge, lots of time was spent on that, this i know it  will make the game even more grand...you will feel more in touch with the game.  The companion help will also be a great bonus to help you when playing, I think adding something different can be pretty great if excuted well.  I like the balance that all the classes are getting aswell, this will make it more exciting to try not just a few but maybe all of the classes and just soak something that can be very grand. This game has a lot of new things it wants to do and guess what Bioware knows how to make new things shine.

There's a lot of negativity towards this game and it's not even out, ppl complaining about having to hear through dialog, lol in most games ppl skip it  quest text and guess what, you could be missing out on something great in the story or quest that is about to happen or and item that is needed to be used in the quest.  The engine looks bad and too cartoony, I think the engine is going to be great, this engine and be tweaked and played around with some much and all in realtime, even after the product is finalized they can do even more with it, to some level.

People that pick on wow cause they never played it cause of how it looks, or quit it cause they didn't enjoy the trial version ( trials version do not even let you really experience this game, putting down 20 dollars and just buying the first game with 30 days play is just enough to really see what your missing)

Myself that has played many of MMO's, EVE and WOW have always been back on my play list, because there's just something exciting that all the other ones don't do well and I believe that when SWTOR launches next year, it to will be on  my list of games to play for a very long time.

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I call it "The new generation of more of the same". The minute they started saying "tank" and "healer" I knew we were doomed to a sci-fi WoW 2.0 :(

Though I'll probably play it if a friend of mine wants to, just to stay in touch with him. But I'm nowhere near as hyped as I used to be about it.

That's more like 4.5 reasons to forget about SW:ToR from my point of view. Maybe even 5.

    .5 is because it's SW.

4 is because no amount of pink glasses is going to persuade me that this will work out.

And another .5 is because bioware seems to be oblivious to the basics of MMO-fu and think that they can just ride in and take the market with the same stuff they stuff in their single player games.

I hope it doesn't turn a complete disaster and that they can still keep producing SP games after this thing hits their budget. After all, these days no one else does as much CRPGs as they do.

On the other hand there seem to be a lot of SW fans with expert level pink glasses around, so who knows, maybe they can sell enough of this to even make a profit...

I think it's funny that the OP is regarding SWTOR as being so anticipated except the fact that SWTOR isn't rated very high on their own most anticipated list. The only reason SWTOR went from #5 to #3 is because a couple of the games lost hype points. SWTOR still has the same hype points it did before the bump...

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

From what I've seen in the multiplayer combat video, the game plays too much like WoW for me to be stoked for it.

I have a few other issues with it, like the bad character models, which remind me of the "Clone Wars" cartoon (which is horrible btw). I'm also not a huge fan of companions. I don't like pet classes and it boggles my mind that BioWare would pretty much force everyone to be a pet class.

I'll probably play it anyway but as more and more features are anounced, and the game becomes more and more like WoW, I feel less and less enthused about it.

I think you're wrong on this one, but time will tell.

I know that I, personally, will be picking the game up just based on the fully fleshed-out story for each of the classes, and to hell with the MMO portion of it.   Don't get me wrong - if the multiplayer aspect of the game makes the story more enjoyable, then I'm all for it.  But I am NOT going to be picking up the game just because it's an MMO; I dislike most of the standard MMO tropes and game design philosophies.

For the record, I play EVE and Fallen Earth, and played SWG until they changed the game to the point where it was no longer fun.  I have given both Vanguard and Age of Conan multiple tries but always end up cancelling my subscription because I just didn't enjoy the lack of immersion and the standard MMO "holy trinity" of tank, healer, and DPS.  I hate the way classed MMOs lock you into one predefined role or set of roles and say "because you can do x you aren't allowed to be any good at y," such as not being able to both dish out lots of damage and be able to take a hit at the same time.

Now, I'm very much afraid that The Old Republic will go the same route as other MMOs are far as the way the classes work, but I guess we'll all find out one way or another.  I can, however, probably live with it if - and only if - the story is as immersive and in-depth as what I've come to expect from Bioware titles.

Notice how "innovative gameplay", "exciting combat mechanics", "challenging content", "engaging world", and "good multiplayer aspects" are not on this list.  I really hope this isn't another single player game with a monthly fee.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

We dont need story when we play an online game.

    Voice acting, who care?

Companion character: who need a companion when we play online? Its like saying that the only way i want to live longer is because i have an imaginery friend.

Ship housing: If we cannot siege other players house, whats the point?

Its starwars,  Lord of the ring online said the same thing. Its bioware, the reason why combat wont be fast so its even worst.

This is a free country where people can say or bash what ever they want. The problem that i have with this is that people are bashing something that they know little about and/or they just want this game to fail. Maybe its the fact that you all just dont want to get your hopes up or something but come on. YOU do not know what the final product is. To say that this is a failure even a year before this game is released is jumping the gun. My question to you is have you all been soo let down in the past that you just dont want to have positive thoughts and/or you just cant see anything postive about this game? To me this will not be a WoW clone because this will be an epic story. WoW was all about grinding and Chuck Norris. There may well be negiative things in this game. This is bioware and i have yet to be turned off by a bioware game and i cant wait to get my hands on this game.

    Omg..

I just barely finished reading the first page , my eyes bleed:/.

Most of those comments are from peopole they show up read the text dont know anything about the game other than written in this text and trying to look smart by commenting what was written .

    Mmorpg is mmorpg

A good one want steal players from another one . It will get mass of new players this is all about it.

Comparing mmos to each other is also funny , becouse 99 %  are some fanboys from other games doing it  .

I personally been waiting for sw tor since 2004 . Meanwhile 2006/7 i started to play WoW to this day im still playing it only becouse there are no other games worth playing ( Besides EVE ) . Daoc or WAR got pwned by the same company wich is called goa (the game killas)

WoW in 2004 when its been released have cost 100 mil $ , SW tor will cost min 200 mil $ so we can expect a game rich on contend from the beginning not an empty game thats gonna be polished over next 2 or 3 years after release .

Once SW TOR goes live there will be a  huge amount of people in first 3 months same happens with every other new mmo.

The thing is if they gonna be able to hold this amount of players, there is alot of things into it  like if the servers are stable,    gameplay without lags or crashes  etc .

What i hope is also that SW TOR will be played by the older type of gamers like myself.

Every one waits for something new .

Lets wait and see in spring 2011

Not really. Bioware did NOT design the graphics engine. It is Heroes Journey reskinned.

Very lazy choice when you consider the massive budget. Bioware could have had such more of a game if they designed their own engine.

This game is not Star Wars, it is Star WoWs.

    No thanks!

LOL. U think game companies design graphics ENGINES?????

Obv u dont know what your talking about so you should not speak. Not that I think TOR will be good. It does look like shit and i just cant get over how poorly they designed the world and characters. they just dont look cool at all.

#4) Voice Acting - The voice acting will be cool for a day, then skipped by a good % of the player base, because they'll want to play not watch a ugly interactive cartoon.

#3) Companion Characters -  People in current day MMOs are OBSESSED with pets, so this is prob gonna be a epic win on their part, or possibly a fail because its a person rather than a pet, who knows.. I don't get it, not personally a fan, but this fits well with the single player aspect the game is pushing forward.

#2)Player ships as housing - Its a alright concept, though I'm pretty sure people would have much rather had a community of housing rather than a ship all by their lonesome, again, current day MMOs (WOW) is about the social aspect of being around people.. and frankly segregating people to their own private location tends to make places a deserted waste land (DAoC is a good example .. when housing went in, the capital cities were empty.. WoW has no housing, capital cities are jam packed)

#1) It's Star Wars and Its Bioware - No its STAR WARS, frankly who the hell cares if its BioWare.. woooo single player game company is making an MMO!!!! SWEET BRO! If it was BioWare making hmm lets see "Bruce Lee World Online" or something that wasn't Star Wars , no one would give a flying shit if it was made by BioWare, the sole reason this is gigantic is ONLY because it is Star Wars. I'd be willing to be MOST people interested in this game, have never played a BioWare game before, and never heard of the company prior to this game.

Anyhow, Wold of Star Wars looks like it'll be a decent casual game for me if TERA fails, or something like Earth Rise never comes out (or sucks).

A wise man once said, "I can't tell you the guaranteed path to success, but I can certainly tell you how to guarantee failure. Try to please everyone."

I am under no illusions that the style of MMO Bioware is creating will not be everyone's idea of a good time. There are players who will hate some or all of the factors mentioned. Frankly, all that means is that "Star Wars: The Old Republic" is not for you. Feel free to save yourself time and go play another game. You don't have to LIKE The Old Republic - we won't be taking away your geek card.

On the other hand, if any and/or all factors mentioned in this article appeal to you as the potential for a good gameplay experience, then good luck to you. We may all be disappointed, but there is every chance we will be having a great time.

I am at least willing to wait until the game is released to try it out. In this day and age, it's all you can really do...

Speak for yourself and not for others. I love good stories(read: NOT AION) in MMOs and it is my primary reason for playing certain mmos. Just because you hate it does not mean "most" do, it means "you" do.

Enjoy Tera. It sounds like fun, well for you, not for me :D Seeing how little control Korean studios usually give their western studios I don't see Tera being anything but a grinder with flashy graphics and combat system. I'm not trusting the words of a western studio that is releasing a Korean made game. RIP Aion & NC West.

I think somewhere along the line people forgot about the 'RPG' aspect of an MMO. I partially blame WoW for this. A lot of non-MMO gamers joined up to WoW and now they go round diluting the market of 'MMORPGs' with their desire for a WoW clone. Dont get me wrong, I like WoW and played it for 5 years until recently, but it really never had the 'RPG' side down as well as they could have.

Here is to hoping that SW:TOR can really bring that back. I'm sure it is not everyones cup of tea to have a story shoved down their throat with speech thrown into the mix, but hell.. if thats the case why play RPGs or MMORPG's at all? *shrug*

No matter what anyone says, I look forward to this game and it pretty much remains the only MMO I am currently looking forward to.
