I won't elaborate at all on this idea because I feel lazy, but we all know it's inevitable.
Thoughts?
Oh, and if you're not a fan of Bioware or Mass Effect, don't bother responding to this.

The world and the lore surely has potencial for it, but Bioware is now developing SWToR and probably wont enter another online experience until they see how the market will react to ToR.
Even if the model becomes sucessfull it will take many years to develop and a big part of the team would be on ToR.
I dont believe this will ever become reality and even if it does you have many many years of wait
My thought is why are you asking for other's thoughts only if they align with yours?
What? You can be a fan of Bioware and Mass Effect and be able to disagree with them making an MMO of it. I was simply clearing out the tens of posters that may come by and just bash on Mass Effect or Bioware. I was nost asking for peoples thoughts on Bioware or Mass Effect, just peoples thoughts on them making an MMO for it, so this would be a thread for people who enjoy the series.

Sounds like an amazing idea to me honestly, I love the world and stories behind the series.
But you can bet your ass that if ToR is a hit, they'll take a shot later on with Mass Effect. It would seem logical that they'd wanna duplicate the success of ToR(if it does uber well), and the next biggest RPG series they've made next to the KotoR series is the Mass Effect series.

Stories are good within single-player RPG, tbh mass effect doesnt have the lore for it to be an MMO (in other words, it hasnt matured enough).
Sure it got potential. What it needs is one cataclysmic event to change the entire lore, maybe they'll do it in ME3. At this point it's just anyone's guess.
Also it need to have multiple faction for it to work, otherwise it's gonna be like LOTRO but even worse.
Balancing races might be tough too.
my 2 cents
I personally think a Dragon age mmo would be a much better idea and something bioware would actually do because like you said if TOR is successful they wont make another game with the same sci-fi setting and familiarity.
Well, they have at least one more single player game to expand, and they'll probably make more, both Mass Effect games were hits from what I understand. If the third one does well, they'll probably look in to making a fourth, but likely with a differently store line not involving Shepard.
...maybe I'll get to play as a Turian...

They said third is the last one.
SW: TOR will be alot like that and Mass Effect is too character centered to become a good MMO.

What a waste of money. There is a genre for games ruled by corridors and voice acted by Martin Sheen, and that genre is called console shooter. Why would you want to mix up that with a mmorpg is beyond me. It's incredible what can a few rambo posters do to a mind of a teenager.
REALITY CHECK
Honestly, we don't have enough Sci-Fi MMOs out there, and I disagree with them being similar.
Are they both futuristic? Yes.
Other than that, both games involve different time periods, different races and Mass Effect seems to be a bit more on the serious side than Star Wars. Plus, Mass Effect is kinda the only one in the future because Star Wars takes place in the past.

I had a feeling someone like you would come along, did I say it needed to be uber restricted? No.

Wait... I'm sure I can find an example of some other game developers saying that and then making another...

Im not specially thrilled by ME, Its a good game but sligthly overrated, and the story is decentish, period. its the gameplay that shines imo...
so a Mas Effect MMO specifically? I lean towards the "who gives?" option. But a MMO with such controls? hell YES
thats why Im so pumped with WAR40K, apparently it will feature that ME/TR combat system that Im totally in love with
While I also enjoy ME background and universe, I was happy reaching the end/climax so unless there is a major re-vamp of gameplay, I would not be looking forward to an mmo version.
Well I really enjoyed playin ME 1 and 2. The gameplay was ok. The AI was usually too stupid to make any danger though. Unless you were playing on the highest level when some could one shot KO you and having two dozen rounds delivered between eyes wasn't lethal to your enemies.
What I really liked in the world were the characters and the world (some things actually made sense on scientifical basis, if you actually invent something like element zero and for some strange reason make almost all alien sapient races humanoidal). This will be mostly lost when shifted to the MMO enviroment IMHO.
Think carefully about what exactly did you love in the game. And remember that no matter how hard you try, people will not role play on the level of a carefully planned scenario. The cooperation level of that 3 man unit will also probably be not achievable without real time voice comunication. And I don't need to say what it makes of immersion when that 7 foot high Krogan speaks with a voice of a 13 old girl.
Some games and worlds just doesn't translate good into MMO. Think for example about The Witcher. That's a brilliant RPG game story and character wise [it was lacking a little on the gameplay side though]. But story and characters will not translate into MMO world. The same here. Mass Effect Online could be a great game. But it will most probably lose most of the things that was great in the original ME.
But I am actually less sceptical then it may sound. A game can be extremaly fun and enjoyable against all odds. If they make a good game I can play it. Good luck Bioware.
Hrm. There was some talk of ME3 being an MMO, but it doesn't seem likely after I just finished ME2. First off, your choices in ME2 affect the story in ME3, so how can it be an MMO? You'll upload your saved games, more likely than not. Still, the ending of ME2 was pretty ominous and set up a good MMO scenario. Like if the WAR40k MMO was set during one of the Tyrannic Wars.
I agree that if TOR is a success, another MMO will be a strong consideration, and hopefully it's Mass Effect. It's won me over.
If you're talking about the gameplay of Mass Effect becoming an MMO, it's already being done with SWTOR. I think that the sort of experience ME offers is extremely biased towards single-player experience, so I don't think it's a good formula for an MMO. ME has little to no interaction mechanics - all the options are simply coded in as unique situations.
If you're talking about an MMO set in the Mass Effect universe, I sure hope it'll happen. There are so many worlds, species and various conflicts going on the fringes of the main storyline in ME, that it could definitely make for a very deep and interesting virtual world to inhabit. The MMO landscape is desperately missing a more modern and elaborate sci-fi game.
TR showed that ME-like action-based combat can and does translate beautifully to MMOs, SWG showed that you can create a deep and in-depth world where the dancer and the merchant and the gun-for-hire can interact meaningfully without it being pre-written, EVE showed that a giant universe with many worlds and it's own politics and room for many playstyles can exist. All the elements for a successful sci-fi MMO are out there. Someone just needs to pick a good setting (like ME) and make it!
Personally, I like to think of SWTOR as BioWare's 5 year guiney pig on how to build the ME MMO.

Actually, they (Bioware) has said that the third game is the last one involving Shepard. Electronic Arts has stated that they're not giving up on the franchise after just those 3 games, so there will likely be other mass effect games, just not ones featuring Shepard. I'm thinking that it's more likely to be turned into a long-running single player franchise rather than an MMO.

Ive heard others compare SWTOR to ME. I hope you are correct. I would love to see that type of gameplay introduced into an MMO. Single player? Yeah, single player game of ME calibre introduced into an open ended world. If this is the case I will definitely buy and gladly pay a sub fee for SWTOR.
Edit for spelling. Sorry folks, still on my first cup of coffee.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
I wonder if Mass Effect XI will be a MMORPG.
As much as the series is great I doubt that Bioware would use Mass Effect to make an MMORPG out of it. If they were to have done that I would have expected them to be doing that now instead of TOR. So don't hold your breath on them making another title that would directly compete with TOR.
