Skimpy armor, clown suits, full metal of encumberment...
Appearance equipment slots would go a long ways to solving these silly "problems".
Anyways, skimpy armor protects via magic. Mages in most of these games can rip holes in space/time. Skimpy armor being protective or rings of protection can't be all that hard. Now, the sexism issue is easily solved through appearance equipment. Always been curious why more games do implement such a thing so people can actually choose how their character looks (I miss UO and feel disgusted when a SoE game has a GOOD feature very few other games have).
Skimpy armor, full armor, something inbetween, let the individual players decide from the plethora of armor available and not some crack pot developer latest wacked out design on the "effective" gear.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
Not a woman here but some armor really makes me go WTF. I mean, it is downright unrealistic. In fact, might as well go to battle naked. Which may be fine for a long range caster but defenately not for a rogue/warrior.
[...] But my first question is: is something made completely for fantasy or something that has trees fighting you, orcs throwing boulders at each other or whatever...do these really need to have realistic anything? Logic? [...]
A fantasy world has its own rules and logic that should follow.
I wouldn't question for example if a fantasy world declares it has reversed gravity and everything i meet follows that rule. But if i find inside that world something that has normal gravity, i need a pretty damn good explanation (that makes some sense in that fantasy world). Otherwise i would lose all my interest in its lore and i think everybody would.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
As a woman who does not enjoy pornographisation (of either gender, actually), I often have problems in mmo's if I want to play a mage or similar who are usually portrayed semi-naked. It makes me feel uncomfortable and ludicrous to play a character who has so clearly been designed with the idea of sexually titillating the players.
Despite the fact that a number of respondents to this thread who have identified themselves as male have stated that they don't mind, I believe that not only does skimpy/over-sexualised female armour denigrate women by stereotyping and limiting them to a barbie-doll type appearance whose underlying mesage is that the way the female character looks must be a) supposedly pleasing to males, and b) is more important than what the female character does. This stereotyped restricted representation of female characters also under-estimates male players who surely don't want to be sitting goggling at pixelated fantasies rather than foccusing on playing the game?
I think that no matter what world we are playing in an armor made from a layer of air can be a nice protection against a hot day. Against sharp, dynamic objects it isn't exactly effective. Why the hell a female tank is not wearing a full plate armor made up from plates of metal covering every part of the body? She is expected to get a lot of attention from swords, hammers, arrows and all that.
And why the hell game designers keep thinking that less clothes = more sexyness? I mean DAMN! Haven't you ever met a girl or a woman that know how to dress to be sexy?
On the other hand. I think that the armor that makes one look like a hooker should have some effect on male mobs. One can look at the boobs instead of trying to stab you. That would be an extremaly hilarious gameplay mechanic.
Edit: Sniped by the post above, which is made of truth.
I do not care either way. I have started threads here in this forum on this very subject and I think the consensus was that many players feel like I do - they just wish to have a wider variety for customization purposes. One thing I do not like is seeing characters running around in 3 inch heeled ankle strapped pumps. That is just stupid and silly.
BTW this is my character from the game Mount and Blade and I think she just rocks. ^_^

I is DUUUUUUUUUUDE!
Using your tank scenario good sir, I've been wondering for a long time how any "threat" mechanic would realistically work. I mean, any smart enemy would ignore the macho tank's "HEY YOU DOOFUS LOOK OVER HERE AND HIT ME INSTEAD OF MY VULNERABLE HEALER!" So how could a tank get that attention? Well, if the tank was a very sexy female and scantily clad, she might be more successful. Unfortunately, you're right about the armor bit. Plus, some enemies wouldn't care about nice boobies.
As for female armor overall... I'm in the middle. I think some of it is ridiculous, particularly from the East (where girls fight in 6-inch high heels, HELL YEAH!?!?!), but some of it is semi-realistic, like WoW. I mean, I don't have a problem with some cloth class wearing a stylish robe that reveals a little more than a robe should. They're protected by magic/holy barries and friends, so they don't have a dire need for realistic armor. If it's a chainmail bikini, well, that's a bit ridiculous. I think these MMOs should have believable armor for both genders in combat and nice non-combat clothes for when they want to relax or turn on their sex appeal. Like a nice evening dress from the Auction House, right? Right.
Edit: Teala, I wouldn't say it to her face because she looks like she could kill me in any number of ways, but I couldn't tell she was female at first. But then I looked at the face instead of the chest. Sigh.

I agree. What I meant by not having logic was referring to games that are based on "real life" situations. When I play a game, and I mostly play RPGs, I don't want it based on like what I see in my own life. If I wanted to see that, I would just get off the game. But a fantasy world should, just as you said, have its own rules and logic. (Let's just say I hate the realistic storylines that games tend to have nowadays xD ) No offense to people that like these types of games but those are the types of games that I just won't play.
Oh and here is what I think one of the perfect examples of a female character that the creator took into consideration everything about armor and still looking good. She not only destroys all opponents in her path but adjusting to each situation she's in, she changes her armor. (FairyTail FTW!)

I doubt, for example, slaying daemon-possessed monsters in a setting not unlike the Holy Roman Empire is anything like "what you see in your own life." But it's still relatively believable, and that's what matters. You get a feel of the inspiration of the world (16th Century Europe), but there's still enough fantasy elements to distinguish it as not real. The fantasy world should have its own rules and logic, yeah, but if they're too alien to us, they won't be appealing. To most people anyways, and that's what counts. No offense, but I see crazy unlimited imagination as belonging to a five year-old.
Maybe I'm better suited for sci-fi, where most of the setting is based off projected and logical advancement of familiar technology and science.

I'm talking about the games that tend to have real places in them or things from "our world". Obviously I don't mean games that have extreme impossible storylines. I rather everything in the games I play to be completely otherworldly.
A world needs to be logical within the rules that it makes. If you accept the thing that there is Force you can see how shooting lightning is possible.
And I can assume you if you find a worm whose poo has the effects of Spice from Arrakis you will get filthy rich selling it. And people will literally kill each other to eat it.
That saying returning more ontopic. I wonder why strip-armours seem so unrealistic for me and wielding a sword which burns or shines or looks like it weights 50 kg seems ok. And the conclusion is surely like it was agreed upon. More character customisation please.
Jayarte, and stereotyping men in MMOs (huge figures, nicely textured muscles, courageous faces, etc.) is fine for you? ” This stereotyped restricted representation of female characters also under-estimates male players who surely don't want to be sitting goggling at pixelated fantasies rather than foccusing on playing the game?”
Well, that’s a video game, what is on the screen is very important. In case I am interested exclusively in combinatorics I am playing chess.
Don’t you think (no offensive) that applying stereotypes like “sitting goggling at pixelated fantasies” and “enjoy pornographisation” on every male player could be a real sexual harassment? We are not that spoiled. In spite that pornography and adult content have clear definitions there is still a lot of controversy. Are ancient Greek statues, masterpieces of Michelangelo, Rubens, Picasso “adult content” (formally yes) and kids should not visit museums of fine arts? It is often the problem of a particular viewer and not of artistic work itself: one sees pornography and dirty “pixelated fantasies”, another a nice drawing. Chop off a head, “kill” a child (see some MMO races, e.g. Popori race in TERA) is OK but nudity – no, no. What is art, beauty was debated for ages and will be discussed until the end of the mankind.
Having said that I must admit that I am thinking in the same way as you are, when implementation of game features like flirt, romancing, marriage are discussed. I have skipped all that while playing off-line RPG Dragon Age. Such “functional” immersion is not for me, nude patches I found boring and useless.
Well I'd like to see a game that doesn't discriminate. I'd like to see a game set in the Heroic Age with full nudity for both genders. I'm man enough to handle it. Realistically, the Greeks were either fully armored to the teeth as Hoplites or freeballing with a shield and spear because it's more athletic. Women went bare breasted in overly sexy bodices in the Aegean region. Look at Greek Art. Clothing optional. It's not even a perversion factor for me, everyone in clothing breaks immersion in the ancient world. Look historically around the world. The "Tits are evil" doesn't even hold up in the medieval middle east.
Show me a female Pict warrior, and I'll show you a painted on outfit that isn't fooling anyone.
So while I think it's stupid that women armor is automatically half naked versions of the male armor, I don't think that a lack of clothing is essentially the problem, it's that they get the same benefit for less armor. I say if you want to look sexy, put on all your armor except your breastplate and dump 'em out, but know you're not going to have the benefits of that extra armor. But then again, there will be other advantages.
I think nothing will send chills down your spine like a half naked "Akkilles" with his cock out killing everybody and yelling "PRISON RULES" while squatting and unsquatting over the bodies of the fallen.
I just want to see the comeback of Horror games... And did I mention how much money you'd get off launch even if the game sucked?

Exactly. Sci Fi is much more Realistic. Like riding giant worms and eating Spice in Dune, or shooting lightning out of your fingertips like Star Wars.
Well, Star Wars is more science fantasy than sci-fi. Dune probably as well.
Sci-fi is actually more realistic in that it is based on what might be possible given the science we know. More often than not it is about how science intertwines with humanity.
Star Wars isn't science fiction because the science doesn't really matter. The stories are not "man in light of his science". The stories can be written as straight fantasy and you would only have to change a few things.
Heinlein is a sci-fi writer. george lucas? well, not so much with the exception of THX 1138.

Female gamer here. What I really want is a choice. I wouldn't mind the ridiculously small outfits if there was a choice between that and say a moderate design and a huge design like the guys have. In fact, I think it would be great if we all had more choices in clothing styles in general. Some women love running around looking like a hooker with a sword, others hate it. I am not really going to judge anyone for the choice, but I'd love to be able to just pick what style I want.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
Well im male but me and the wife have had this discusion before, its not that she doesn't like the skimpy armor it fits some RP styles for some class or play types i.e. a fast hitting dule whilder whearing heavy but skimpy armor looks right male or female in the same big shield and sword should == big armor. So I never really got the answer I was looking for from her but I gathered that she would like some variaty some times she wants somthign light and skimpy (with out skimpy armor factor) some times she wants to look like a M1A1 main battle tank and the same goes for me (male or female char) it really depends on how I am playing the char and what the class is like as to what I would like it to look like. As a rule I do play and think of a female char as more agile than bruit (with some exception) so favor the lighter looking armor sets with males I tend to think lumbering ox i.e. the biggest shield armor and wep I can find (for female I usualy go 2handed or dule whield if its an option).
All in all though I dont really care I have seen cool lookign armor that bearly covers a thing on male and female chars as well as cool looking armor on that covers head to toe. In the same I have seen a lot of just bad armor sets (Im lookign at you early WoW) in both catigories.
I don't care if a caster has a neckline down to her navel, robes aren't stopping a sword anyway. But when I'm playing a tank, and my character is wearing the metallic equivalent of garters and a shiny bra, it annoys the crap out of me. And I agree with the others about the stupid spike heels, too. Leave them to the casters or leave them out entirely, they don't belong on a melee fighter/tank. Also, let me customize my characters' body type, so my tank female toons aren't anorexic, mincing little lightweights who couldn't stand up under the weight of realistic armor in the first place.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Maybe I'm better suited for sci-fi, where most of the setting is based off projected and logical advancement of familiar technology and science.

Ha thank you; I have argued this with my wife forever, she wont give Star Wars a chance becuase she loves to hate sci-fi but she likes fantasy and StarWars is a solid fantasy story with all the magic, proficy, etc. I have told her 100 times replace the ships with horses, the blasters and light sabers with swords and bows and there you go really big fantasy very tiny science fiction in StarWars at least as I think of it.
And your right on with Dune it more than StarWars fits the formula for a solid fantasy story more so than your common thought of sci-fi. . . actualy I guess I much prefer the fantasy with a little sci-fi feel to it . . . we need a Dune MMO.
Well I'd like to see a game that doesn't discriminate. I'd like to see a game set in the Heroic Age with full nudity for both genders. I'm man enough to handle it.

I am not really going to judge anyone for the choice, but I'd love to be able to just pick what style I want.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

As haunting as that was, yeah that was pretty much what I was thinking of. Though I wasn't that intimidated. Everything looks proportional to me...
