A small interview with the Battle Planner Atsushi Okada was also translated by Elmer of ZAM:

Positioning and Orientation in Battle

"When fighting monsters, the direction from which you attack can alter the power and/or effect of your techniques.  There are also other elements such as the ability to break off parts of the monster's body by attacking certain areas.  This isn't true for every single enemy, but say you're fighting a monster with two large horns on its head.  Attacking the head from the right side with a certain technique could cause the horn to break.  Similarly, attacking certain creatures from behind can damage their tail.  Such precision attacks will be a part of the battle system.  We hope players enjoy trying out how attacking certain areas cause changes in the monster."

The New Action Guage

"In the beta version, the Action Guage is a set length and fills at a set speed.  However, the Action Guage now has a direct effect on the effectiveness of attacks, so we are looking into what further changes might be made.  For example, we could add an ability that makes the Action Guage fill up faster -- something like a Haste spell, perhaps.  Also, we are testing out having the Action Guage fill up at different speeds for different classes."

Comminication in Battle

"Since players have to constantly be selecting commands during battle, it's can be difficult to find a moment to chat with your teammates.  In order to allow party members to communicate in the midst of battle, we plan to include a set of icons intended to convey key concepts.  For example, there will be signs that indicate "Let's do Battle Regimen X" or "Please heal me!" that can be quickly and easily displayed to the party."

The official website seems to be a bit light on the available "classes" (i.e. No Fishermen, Woodworker, or Goldsmith listed). Is there somewhere that I could find a complete list? or is that list still under the NDA?

  • HyanmenHyanmen Member UncommonPosts: 5,357

There's a TON of classes not yet revealed.. but so far the ones we could see implemented right at release are the aforementioned ones, as well as Shepherd, Musketeer, and Arcanist.

But yeah, there's like 10+ classes that are a possibility but we prolly won't see them before the game hits the shelves. Stuff like whip-user and assassin.

I have been following the game very closely and have not heard anything on a Sheperd or an Arcanist. What kind of classes are they? Or where could I find info on them?

    You can use a whip-weapon?

Flayer uses the whip I believe, but I doubt the file with the large list of classes was supposed to be posted on the forums this early. It had a list of like 30 classes at least for FF14.

You have not been following close enough then. Theres a list of classes that have been data mined from the client, but you cant discuss those classes here on this site, or any site that enforces NDA. Just google it.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Square has been giving exclusive footage and info to Famitsu magazine on XIV for ages, probably because of it's huge reputation in Japan and perhaps even it is necessary for a game developer to do so to even have a hope of a perfect review score from them. A lot of the other info that comes out is from unreliable sources and you may or may not see these in the actual game release on launch, though yes if someone goes data mining for hidden info or violates NDA then there is probably some basis for what they are writing or posting online.

If my assumption is correct then Flayers might be a disciple of Magic. I just can't imagine a Disciple of war using a whip.

I have heared rumors of :

    12 Disciples of War

    6 Disciples of Magic

    8 Disciples of the hand

    4 Disciples of the land

Being currently in development. Just can't remember where i read that or i'd have posted a link. But it would be compliant to your number of 30 Disciplines.

The character system of FF XIV might just be the golden globe of Next gen MMO's, we'll see how it works out. But if that many disciplines make release then the game will be an awesome place for people that love to experiment with their characters.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

It's really something all MMO's should strive towards, instead of being locked to one class.

We'll probably see them adding about one class per update after release. Might slow down at some point but so far so good.

Anyway, I added a small interview to the OP. Confirms some things I already assumed like position affecting the monsters body parts.

I just love the detail and quality S-E puts into its crafting jobs. I remember fishing in FFXI, it felt like real fishing! So relaxing and you could go explore the world with just your fishing pole and bait. Of course you had to be careful in dangerous areas and all that but still fun.

I like how now it seems to be even more involved, seeing as when you equip the fishing pole you "become" a fisherman with probably a whole different skill set, etc. Ooh, I can't wait.

I was going to be a Marauder on day 1. I may just have to get myself to the woodworking guild, craft myself a fishing pole, if possible, and focus on Marauder/Woodworker/Fisherman for my first foray into Eorzia. Come on September!

Crafting and Gathering really is more involving this time, although fishing was like that already in XI so I dunno what kind of improvements there are in XIV, if any.

This game, believe it or not, is really shaping up to be like the old-school MMO's with player economy, community building (guild features and player housing, player-made marketplaces) and not just combat centric gameplay.

May I even call it another shot at SWG? I think its closer to it than other upcoming titles at least, to be completely honest. Hopefully without gameplay taking a hit because of it.

I have no problem with SWG and XIV being similiar; as long as SoE stays the hell away.
