That blog post and all the comments are extremely immature. Just as I've come to expect from WoW players. Funny thing is they're proving the worth of this move(even though I'm not for it) by their own immaturity.
I do have to so that this(RealID) is just one more reason I'm glad I don't play WoW. *snickering away*
So some blogger makes up a story that he found the name of a person that posted it on the forums. For all we know, this is whole story is just made up to say...see what I did...and it really proves nothing because he could have just made it all up to try to prove his point.
I think the accountability aspect of RealID is sorely needed in the online world, but my concern is about cyber stalking and cyber harassment due to easy access of real names. I'm not at all afraid to express my opinions or whatever and have them associated to my real life, but the last thing I want or need is someone to take my name and at best, stalk or harass me for differeing opinions or even worse, lead to greater numbers of identity theft or impersonation.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Cool story bro, and yet here you are following whats going on in the game, so clearly no glad enough.
"i just got a divorce, but i'll continue to stalk my ex wife and laugh at her misery"
You guys are all kinds of awesome.
"It is my opinion, that my opinions are always right"
I look for Blizz to be sued over this, this will endanger people's lives and end up leading to people being stalked or killed.
This is just a very bad ideal and not the proper way to handle trolls.

It's more like the stories are following him. We're not following this by choice, 40% of the total posts here are about it. It's like the difference between listening and hearing, one is by choice while the other is not.
To all those who are against RealID:
Don't like RealID? don't play WoW. Have 15 dollars a month that burn a hole in your pocket? play WAR, they need the money. I wish you people took your bawwing back to the blizzard forums.
I like the idea. Blizz has to spend too much time cleaning up the forums, which are really provided as an adjunct to the game. The reason I have subbed to WoW in the past is the game.
Cowardly little trolls who have grown up being able to trash others online with impunity are the only ones feeling threatened.
So if you have a store named Bob Smith's Auto, you will be stalked and killed? Ridiculous logic. Man up.
I keep thinking of the end of Jay and SIlent Bob Strike back when they beat down the little trolls in person.....
If you talk the talk you better learn to walk the walk...
That is truely a bad idea. Not that I am playing any Blizzard titles currently, but you just cant reveal the true identity of people on the internet. Bad things will happen. It's for a reason NO ONE does that anywhere I can think of on the internet.
Other than that, if they stick to their plan, what they will achieve is that their forums will be deserted. People will move to some other unofficial forums. I can't imagine anyone will continue to post on Blizzard Forums unless they missed the fact that their real name is displayed, or they are just plain dumb.
Another thing to consider: What will happen to existing posts? Will they all of a sudden display the real name of the poster? That could be lots of fun
Not entirely true. Read about the Cyber Defamation Law <<< clicky
It is not a retro-active policy...so any post made before the new forums go into effect will not show your real name.
With respect, there are millions of people who play WoW, and thus simply from the law of averages, it is certain that there are people playing, who also post on those forums, that are dealing with real life stalkers. Been there, done that, and as a single mom, it isn't a question of 'man up', it is survival to protect your identity so your kids are protected from a lunatic.
In addition, there is the rampant problem with identity theft. No, it's not cowardly little trolls who are the only ones feeling threatened, it's hard working people who do not wish to grant access to their personal info to anyone on those forums or elsewhere. Maybe it means nothing to you that having someone's name is a big step in obtaining other info that leads to emptying bank accounts, but it does mean something to others.
This is totally a bad idea, and there are definitely other and far better ways to deal with trolls in forums. Thankfully, I no longer play WoW, due to their previous idiotic choices, and this just confirms I was right to walk away from Blizzard.

I'm more afraid than ever, because if Blizz can do something as stupid as this, then who else would consider it? I think there's only one reason they doing this and that's to save money for their shareholders. They don't care about your safety as long as they get their subscription each month.
What people don't understand there's a lot of danger for some sections of society. Stalking, identity theft, even been killed because of your alliances or friends.
Yes, I didn't like WoW to begin with. But because they're a market leader, others take notice of them, and then they might do the same type of thing or worse, and that's what worries me. Over the years of playing MMORPG's. I've made a lot of friends, but I've also meet a few nuts, and it's those nuts, whom really scare me.
Personally, I couldn't care less about the O-Boards which I doubt I visited more than three or four times in the first few weeks I played WoW - let's face it, the official forums are a waste of space and have been for years. I'd visit them again if they made the naming policy retroactive though, because it would be hysterically funny to see all the hard-talking trolls from way back actually named. I bet they won't be so tough now!
For every single troll that gets their upcoming from this action. I can grantee that nine other people will get picked on because of their race, gender or for any other reason. Is the cost really worth it?
Exactly.
Look, RealID is not some ultimate Troll-killer. Sure there will be less trolling, but it wont stop it. Nothing will, short of them hiring full-time moderators who aggressively police their forums. But they've been reluctant to do this and still dont. So instead they will just destroy everyone privacy.
They bandy about ideas like "accountability". What they are really saying is "people will be too scared to troll because of the threat of being tracked down by nutters after revealing their real names". The logic of this is so fataly flawed. Their logic is "yes, we know real names will cause serious real world issues but we dont care because its a lazy way to reduce trolling".
But then ofcourse, the reduced trolling is a bullsh1t justification anyways. Because really, they are trying to position themselves in the social networking fad, and this is just one more step. It will be a powerful tool they control and it will be worth serious $$$$$. So ultimately, RealID is nothing to do with trolling yet they are decieving all their paying customers by saying it is. Its all future Social Networking, about more $$$ for Blizzard in the future.
If you cant see this, you're a naive fool.
This.
A measure against trolling is just the excuse and public explanation they use for introducing this measure, something that could've been handled in other better ways to regulate trolling. What it's really about is furthering their plans to turn Battle.Net and other services they have into a Facebook-like environment, real ID's included.
And they want to do it fast, that's why their latest steps in this new area have a more forced character and have less finetuning options that are under your control than Facebook.
About the trolling: real trolls won't be deterred by it, if they fear the openness and are determined than there are ways to circumvent it like a 2nd account.
It leads to the conclusion that if Blizzard's new measure is a danger to the trolls, then it must be a danger to the other posters too for the same reasons. That's common sense.
