I agree with Hyanmen. I like that Christmas feeling that Square brings to their game/expansion/content releases. I love that build up of anxiousness and then boom you go play and its like playing all day on Christmas with that brand new toy(s).
its great to see a company not give in to ppl crying over have to look for themself....SOE used to do this with EQ2, but sure thats ruined by now...can remember how they released info about the claymore questline a month into release, then ppl cried about it on the forums, that they now had to go back do quests in zones they already had lvled in....well in expansion info there had been the hint that maybe someone in your home town needs your help...
wish more companies would stay true to their design....and actually know what it is before making their game :P
I gotta say, as someone who comes to the site pretty regularly, for me not to know nearly anything or have even a slight interest in the game shows a lot of bad PR. There's a difference between not telling a lot of information and being like Johnny Tight Lips. I don't see how anyone who didn't play the first Final Fantasy MMO, such as myself, could even possibly want to buy this game because I don't know anything about it.
I'm probably going to pass though. For all the things I haven't heard about it, the only thing I have heard about is how you can solo the game pretty much and don't really need much group activity. I hate that. So I think I'm gonna pass and wait for TERA and Guild Wars, still, even though it feels like its going to take forever.
Nice solid read, I can't wait to get slaughtered by my first tonberry.
Screw that.
With the Onion helm to decrease the effect of death with my CE, first thing I'll do is run out and get destroyed by a crab.
If ya read the fine print, it doesn't reduce the penalty from death, it only lowers the ressurection sickness effect! So it would be something to wear after you've died and gotten back up, more than likely from raise, cause I doubt there will be a sickness applied from getting up at your HP, just like in FFXI.
Just kidding, FFXIV is the first Final Fantasy game I have ever been interested in let alone excited about. And it will also be the first one I played.

No, it shows MMORPG.com barely covers it. You can go to any other site that covers MMO's and get a ton more info. The only real info MMORPG got was during E3.
So the one thing you heard was missinformatioin. You can't solo everything, but it's definitely more solo friendly than FFXI was. Just things that can be done solo in a short period of time for people who can't play as often. Group play will still be a part of the game. At least, that's what I hear...

Seems to me you've been fed some incorrect, or exaggerated information.
For starters, SE is simply providing more soloable content at launch for FFXIV than FFXI ever had, up 'til they implemented Fields of Valor into FFXI; though you might consider Campaign and Besieged to be sort of "group solo activities". Considering how un-solo friendly FFXI was for most of its time, for SE to add almost any solo-friendly content is significant.
That said...
The guildleves in FFXIV, as I understand it, will have 5 levels of difficulty. Only the first level would be readily soloable. The rest require increasingly larger groups to complete.. the toughest ones requiring up to a full group of 15 people. That doesn't sound very "solo heavy" to me. I'm also pretty certain that the best rewards will be given for the tougher encounters, so I don't expect people are going to be getting everything they could possibly want in the game without ever grouping up.
Further, there's going to be a big focus on group play still, and even moreso than FFXI in that regard. In FFXI you typically had Group against solo mob encounters - with some exceptions, and of course the occasional add. FFXIV is going to feature battles between groups of players and groups of mobs, where crowd control and positioning is going to be key. That also doesn't sound very "solo heavy" to me.
I think some people are reading that FFXIV will provide more content for solo play, and then taking it to the extreme to assume they're making it almost entirely soloable, as so many other MMOs are nowadays.
Doing that would undermine the point of having the last 4 tiers of guildleves and it would undermine the point of group-against-group battles... And I'm sure there will be other activities that require group participation to get into.
If there are other reasons you're not interested in XIV, then that's fine. But I wouldn't let a concern about people "soloing the game" be one of them.
Another way of gauging it is to wait a little while after its release, and then start seeing the sheer amount of whine-fests that erupt on the forums when players weened on "solo to level cap" type MMOs find that they can't do that in FFXIV. Guarantee you're going to see it; people insisting the game is going to fail because they're being "forced to cooperate with other players and can't be an army of one defeating the game's toughest foes single-handedly".... heaven forbid.

Well i just want Square to confirm the variety of monsters if FFIV, if anybody has solid info on that (like, say, at least 200 totally different type of mobs) i'll pre-order right away. Even if it seems that there's still the (kinda dumb imo) quests that you require to do just to be allowed to progress in the higher levels, the variety of mobs was the ultra turndown in FFXI.

“The nations have the tried-and-true luster that the nations from XI had, while taking full advantage of the new graphics engine. Instead of feeling like just a trade hub like in most games, they feel like places you could actually stand to hang out in, and explore.”
I assume here he is refering to cities? I don’t think nations are trade hubs unless they have nations which are just city states in FF?
“is far different” – That’s just poor word choice. “is very different” would be better.
“as long as your character has enough stamina to perform” – something like ‘the action’ should have been added to the end of that sentence.
“in a group with ranging difficulties” – ‘in a group with a rang of difficulties.’
“Many people look at them similar to how many MMORPGs have daily quests that can be done.” – Not sure what he is saying here so I can’t correct it.

1) Nations, city-states, just different names for the same thing. In FFXI the cities were called by the community and even the developers as "nations" so I used a term that many others would be more familiar with in the FF MMO universe. However, as we push closer to launch I will be using the term city-states in place of nations when I speak of cities.
2)Two phrases with the same exact meaning. Far is a bit more, how should I say, expressive than very.
3)If I would have placed "the action" at the end of the sentence, it would have have given overemphasis to an implied subject.
4)Again, same thing different phrase.
5)It means exactly what it says. Many people DO look at Guildleves the exact same way as daily quests from other MMORPGs.

They'll release a little more information before launch, I'm sure. However, I think they're wanting to stick with the whole "Whoa, thats cool. Didnt know they put that in!" feel that FFXI had.

For beta that is WAY to slow imo.

Like in FFXI, SE's not going for fast-paced battle. They're going for a slightly slower paced system where there's time to coordinate attacks, position characters around mobs, deal with adds, etc. etc.
In FFXI, the combat feels extremely slow at first... However, as you get farther into the levels, and the battles get harder, mobs get tougher and there's a greater chance of wiping, you take every extra second you can get between attacks.
That said... FFXI is not the game I would suggest for someone looking for fast-paced battles. Likewise, FFXIV wouldn't be my first choice for that either. That's not a "bad thing". It's just the way they designed the game and, like anything else, you either like it or you don't.

The beta combat looks to me to be much faster than FFXI, but still slower pace than most mmos. Keep in mind when looking at the beta that there is no auto attack in the game, so the combat will look slower than it actually is.
I think of it this way. The normel attack command in FFXIV can be compared to a rogue in world of warcraft using sinister strike to gain combo points, but replace combo points with tp in FFXIV. It is also similiar to how a mage in almost any mmo will spam their basic fireball attack for damage. The lack of auto attack also does not really make a difference as long the the ingame skills are designed around the system.
As long as they have Scholar, I'm in >.> all the other jobs in XI bored me really lol... Who else here is gonna need to get a new computer to play XIV? XD
