Now I have that godawful song in my head.  Count yourself lucky that I don't know your real name and address, because I now hate you with a deep, vengeaful, and lasting loathing.

It's the government man.  They tried to do the Real ID thing but we all said screw that, so now there starting off small time with a bunch of gamers.  If its a success then they will go on to bigger things then try to pass Real ID card again.

According to some Blizzard is doing this due to the Cyber Defamation Law that is being implemented in Korea.

Since this horse has been beaten to death I shall present you with this: Shapeshifting reptiles did it. http://conspiracytheory.tribe.net/thread/1c8071f7-5fc1-4f5b-9270-a98262f6842e There's a link to it, so it must be true - that's just how the internet works.

From the article you quoted:  The only country where such cyber defamation law is being implemented is China...

After reading that, I don't like the political implications of RealID.  It's too easy to keep track of dissenters already.  If it would put a stop to the trade chat teenage Nazi yap, I could at least see the benefit, but it won't.  The only way to stop those idiots is to bring down the banhammer consistently and repeatedly, which isn't happening.  Plus, they don't have to use their real names to spew in chat.

But about those scheming aliens, any progress on tracking down their names and addresses yet?  I hear they drop good loot.

Hmmm...it clearly states China and South Korea.   Also, I guess this article about the Cyber Defamation Law and Google is not real then and it is from 2009.

Where is the BOTH option?  Unless you are a peon employee just trying to earn a paycheck,  Activision/Blizzard are ONE company and all decision makers are to blame

Oops, sorry, cut the quote short.  I had meant to make it clear that the only one doing this before South Korea was China, so there will now be only two countries implementing it, and the first of those two is notorious for human rights violations.  South Korea's record is splotchy in places, too.

I think anyone with any real interest in understanding the purpose of realID and the reasoning for implementing it needs to check this out:

They are supposidly ONE company, but Blizzard is still very much Blizzard. The Blizzard offices are still not the Activision ones.

Someone has to have made the decision, either it was someone from Blizzard, or someone from Activision.

The real question should be "Why" are they doing this? You can bank on the fact that it isn't to make people more sociable. It all comes down to $$$. Their real reason for this realID move will become more clear in the future. You'll see.
