Real ID improves the balance in MMO industry?

XianthosXianthos Member Posts: 723

After reading a lot of discussion about Real ID, i start thinking that it could be in fact a good idea.

Stop. Dont rage, finish reading and then you are allowed! :)

Why so? Simple because it makes WoW less attractive to gamers and there for makes other theme parc games like War40k or SWTOR look more attractive as they were before the news were released.

Will SWTOR now reach with release 2 millions players? Or is War40k still a simple WoW clone? There is one uniq they offer so far (not yet know if they will aswell change to path of Activision) and it is your private info stays your private info and you dont have to worry about getting stalked, identy theft or other crap, which could happen after Real ID and not yet discovered bugs goes online.

Your opinions about the possible "positive aspects" of Real ID?

I believe that most WoW gamers don't realize what Real ID is and how much damage it can do.

I allow any decent, non-WoW MMO to use the following phrase to build a new advertising campaign.

Be who you want to be.

Start the ad campaign now while the anger is still at its highest and get yourself some players.

I hope it actually hurts WoW a lot.

Because, even if they revert the decision, it shows how stupid people at Blizzard seem to be.

When that child gets raped because a predator found out their name on those forums, I hope Blizzard goes to court and realises what complete idiots they are.

I already decided not to buy Diablo III, even though I was a HUGE fan. It's not worth giving people money who don't care about their players at all.

I don't see how this hurts anything except the WoW forums.

    The game hasn't changed.

People can just switch forums, if they even post on forums. They can use Ten Ton Hammer, VN boards, make a brand new fansite forum, etc., etc.

What about the add-ons that people use in game that are linked to realID that allows other players with a simple script to mine the persons real name while in game?

    What sort of add ons?

Optional forums is one thing, but allowing other players to find your real name in game would be the most retarded move ever in MMORPG history.

While I understand your point, I would rather see new games find their success through good design and solid mechanics, rather than succeeding due to the idiocy of others.  If your theory were to play out, we as gamers have not gained, as the aforementioned titles are no different then they are currently planned to be.

Well, one positive aspect of this is now I'll never be tempted to re-sub to WOW (or purchase any other Blizzard product) no matter how shiny and polished it might be.

Are these addons distributed in Fantasyland, or do you have links to provide to validate that this is actually possible.  While I think this is a foolish move by Blizzard, I have not seen anything suggesting that addons will be mining this info.

It has been proven on the WoW forums , someone even posted what you needed to type to see the add-ons know your Real ID

Every major news station reporting about this has hurt their brand already.

I do worry about the potential stalking issues.

When I played CoX a lot, I ended up being in game friends with a 12 year old girl. Not only was she young, but she was really not the smartest pencil in the bunch. She always wanted to duo with me because she said she got kicked off a lot of teams. (she was possibly the worst player I ever met - even helping her with really uber builds she couldnt remember when to use powers appropriately). But I liked her silly humor and felt bad that no one seemed to want to play with her.

She mailed me her real email at one point and while I emailed her about when we were going to be online a few times, I also sent her a short email with my advice that she not give her email out to people, I think I threw in some cautionary tales from my real life - I am in fact an attorney for abused children.

At some point I got an email from her mother thanking me for being a good friend to her in game and specifically for my 'brotherly' advice as she called it regarding the email.

She said she had to change her daughter's account and email since she had gotten some really inappropriate sexual inquiries.

Nice story. In fact the females will suffer most by abuse of the Real ID. Kinda sad, as they got already hard time.

I always understood why girls never wanted to speak vent / ts2.

Yep that is valid point, that we as players dont gain anything at all, but it kinda gives the other companys a chance to gather people which they normaly wouldnt or barely would get.
