how does Buddy pass work in the CE

in Final Fantasy XIV

I am thinking about buying the CE mainly for the buddy pass if it works how i think it will. I am hoping it means that my freind can download the game for free and play for a month and if he likes it he can pay the $50 and continue playing. But if he has to buy the game first then he just gets extra free time than i wouldn't buy the CE. If anyone has any insight on this pls let me know. thx

    I dont think they've really said how it wil work yet, but im pretty sure it's gonna be where your friend can download the game and get a certain amount of time free and pay for the game after his free time is used up.

    Well the whole concept of a buddy pass is that it's a free trial based on a referral system so I doubt they'll be expected to go out and buy a copy of the game.

    Is that the part where you pass your buddy over the diner table and he becomes the dragons lunch?
