We reported back in April that Flying Lab Software had announced this Summer as a launch window for the upcoming "Power & Prestige" update for Pirates of the Burning Sea, but today we've got a more firm date for you.

Flying Lab Software announced today that "Power & Prestige" will be going live this August. The update will introduce over 60 new missions, four new factions, the expansive Port Governance system, and a new  "brawling" combat school, and tons more.

You can find out more about the update at the official Pirates of the Burning Sea website.

Also, be sure to check out the latest dev blog which focuses on the enhanced lighting system that will be coming to POTBS with the new update.

Thing is Sony owns Vanguard.  My understanding is that Pirates is still owned and maintained by Flying Labs.  They just partnered with Sony for the billing.  i could be dead wrong on that, but that's what I thought.

Also, while it doesn't compete with some of the bigger guys, PotBS seems to be doing ok for itself.  It has gone through some server merges, but it has a following and overall it's a decent enough game.

I do wish they would put more dev effort into vanguard though.  A full dev team would do wonders for that game.  There's enough that's special about it that makes it a shame to see it die out.

No, you are correct an0maly33. Flying Labs completely owns and operates PotBS.

60 new missions ! ooooooh from a game that originally said "1,000 missions per nation, so over 4,000 missions total in the game. This is on par with or may even exceed the mission content of World of Warcraft at launch."

    lol

    ooooh 60 !

yeah i doubt any of this will make anyone go back, they ruined the game after the whole eco bombing and refused to listen to the community. Their repeated attempts at "fixes" made it just worse. There's a reason why there's so few servers now compared to pre-boarding and a couple of weeks after launch (more were added).

Good for those that still (for some reason) play it... but... won't draw anyone back.

I read on there web site that there removing 1st and 2nd rate SOL's from the game entirely to try and balance combat, what a crock of Sh*t. I thought about going back not for the expansion just to see how things where but when I read that I was dumbfounded, I played as a pirate and never had any problems with the 1st and 2nd rate's being over powered compared to anything I could captain, that was just part of the history of the period in which this game was set.

The Beta for Power and Prestige is now in the open phase. It is hardly an expansion, more like one large patch. Port Governance consists of a few UI screens and mostly functions  as a gold sink for the games relatively broken economy. Most individuals will not even be able to vote for Governors as the "prestige" necessary to enter and win elections is accrued to one's society then doled out by society leaders, rather than to individuals. All the classes got a major skills overhaul and all the ships have been rebalanced with the idea of making the less costly ships more viable for pvp while restoring the old archetype of ships. Scouts, maneuverable with lighter armament and armor and Warships, sluggish brutes with plenty of armor and firepower. While new missions are nice, the "expansion" feels relatively devoid of content.
