During recent massive battles on EVE's Singularity server (PTS), developers noticed severe performance issues. Finally able to track it down to the caching system running in negative memory usage, developers were able to rectify the situation for Tyrannis.
We are always trying to improve upon and refactor old and slow code. We have started using a new rendering scheme, but as we haven't been able to renovate everything in EVE, some of the things in EVE are still using our original scheme. The dust fields, the particles that pass your ship when you are flying at sub warp speeds, were one of those things. The old implementation was heavily CPU bound and did not scale well. By using our newer particle system we decrease the time updating and rendering particle systems by a third than we did before. The old inefficient particle system was also used for the old suns and we moved the suns into the new rendering scheme for performance reasons. We still do not consider them renovated; they will get their chance to shine in the future.
There is a LOT more to read, particularly for techno-junkies, so head to EVE's developer blog site and check it out.

Performance did not improve at all with the recent expansion and the following patches.
Quiet in opposite, there's situations where it's even got worse and a fight of 20 vs. 20 totally lags out the system allready.
People do nothing else in EvE atm then farming ISK, as fighting in larger scales is nowhere possible.
So you tried it after THIS fix jrs? It's hardly something they can wag a finger at and magically fix, you know.
Eve has had this issue just get worse since Dominion......they only tried to tweek it and modify it a bit since then in hopes it would fix a bit. Sadly They still cannot figure out wtf is the issue, and Fleet fights are almost worthless to attempt.
lol Eve
holybread, have you even played EVE?
I think you're mixing up performance and lag. This blog explains things that improved performance, but not lag.
This is why i will not resubscibre to Eve. When someone finally posts " The lag i'snt so bad anymore" then i will consider it. Not sure what the above poster thinks performance means, but when you have 2 fleets fighting for control of a system and noone can do anything for minutes due to lag thats poor performance imo. Fix the fleet lag and i will comeback.
Where's the difference from a customers POV?
I'm playing the game for over 4 years now, and since the introduction of Dominion we're not able anymore to have fleet-fights. That's all what we as customers are interested in.
For the last 6 month we're basically doing nothing else then farming the complexes or running missions, as territorial warfare in 0.0 is totally impossible.
