Hello everyone,
I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.
It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.
I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.
In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters (http://eu.blizzard.com/en-gb/company/about/mission.html), and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

Smart backdown.
Trolls 1
Blizzard 0
Real ID is still around. Expect round 2 soon.
I can't say I am surprised by their decision, but I hope they do find a way to make this happen in the future.
Trolls 0
Blizzard 0
Everyone else 1
I hope they don't, because this is a win for the decent players from all around the world.
They're still going to implement the forum rating system which sounds very much like what Turbine uses on their forums. That alone takes care of the majority of trolls easily enough, and doesn't require anyone's personal info to be pasted all over the site.
Will this includ Blizz forcing you to choose a forum name? Or at the very least a main character to post with? All the Level 1 alts (or level 55 deathknights) just kinda got outta hand and this was their largest issue with trolls on their forums.

I understand that they're not using real names now. What I'm wondering is if WoW will still let you use whatever character you have to post under, or if they're going to force you to choose 1 character to always post with, or just create a forum name. This all came up because they wanted to reduce the amount of trolling and flaming on their forums. Well allowing everyone to use a level 1 alt or whatever character to post with is the root of the problem.
So my question still stands. Are they going to reduce forum trolling and flaming the smart way? Will they make you use a forum name that you choose? I agree that the RealID was a mistake with exposing a persons actual names but I also understand that they wish to clean up their forums.
There goes the kidnapping plans. Oh well, back to the grooming.

That doesnt mean it will be the same for WoW forums. SC2 =/= WOW
What a shame

If you actually read it, you'd see that it also says: ''The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm''. I'd say it's safe to assume that this will apply for the WoW forums too.

And yes , we should all expect round 2 . They're still going to keep adding Real ID things, optional at first , but expect some subtle forced additions as well. If blizzard learned one thing with this is that they need to be more subtle .
But only time can tell , i give it until 1 month after cata before we see a mendatory Real ID feature implemented, either on the forums or in-game .

Blizzard sucks at PvD.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
