Star Wars: The Old Republic: Game Testing Officially Begins

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Rumors have been floating around on the status of the Star Wars: The Old Republic game testing program recently, with most signs pointing to the fact the testing had officially (though silently) begun. Today, however, Bioware is breaking the silence officially announcing that Game Testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic is now underway!

What the heck is Game Testing anyways? It's been a confounding issue for most fans following the game for some time. Is it just another word for beta testing? Focus group testing? Who knows? And more importantly, who cares?! The fact of the matter is this: those of you that neither work for Bioware or in the game press will be getting your grubby little hands on Star Wars: The Old Republic quite soon. Well, the lucky few of you, at least.

For those of you who care about the specifics of the program, Game Testing does sound a bit more like focus group testing of sorts, as Bioware has clarified the term just a bit more today:

Game Testing is an on-going process being rolled out in several phases. These phases began with smaller, more focused tests with community members from North America, and later will expand to other territories.

Game Testing registrations began last September. So, if you've not signed up yet, what are you waiting for? Head on over here to make your mark!

No guarantees on whether you'll get in or not, however. You'll just have to consult your vine-coffee leaves like the rest of us.

Sadly - meaning, sadly for the people living outside North America - testing is limited to NA right now.

Bioware, you do know Istanbul is in NA, right?

    Right???

Would you guys mind posting a screenshot of this please so I can send it over to support? Thanks!

So is there a difference between focus testing and just flat out regular closed beta?

Is focus testing more up the alley of what Square is doing with Final Fantasy XIV where they only show certain parts of the game to test, but the rest(the meat) of the game is left for after launch?

If so YAY! Maybe we can get back that mystery of wondering what the game will have for us once it launches. I much prefer a small demo of a game as opposed to showing me it all at once during a test phase. Lets keep the mystery and wonder alive unlike being deluged with the whole game 2 months before release(Warhammer, AoC, WoW, etc.)

This is awesome I can't wait to play it!

As far as we know elocke, certain people test certain things, and ONLY those certain things in game testing.  Once your spot is done, you are finished.  Some people may be invited for other areas of game testing if they help out enough.

I have a really gewd computer now, and I signed up for the forums and the game testing basically the day they announced it and nothing.  So don't feel too bad.

I wonder what its like to be among the first to test this game?  Im thinking it must be sort of thrilling and nerve wracking at the same time.image

Ok, I just felt this rush of excitement. Then I thought "maybe I shouldn't accept it even if I get in". Every time I've beta'd a game, I've been disappointed. It even took LOTRO three years to become a good game. So... I don't know what I'll do.

Not so great for people outside North America, I remember Bioware doing something similar to this with a bazzar that was only open to people in NA.

While I am sure that EA will take anyones money I wonder if we will see a similar situation with ToR as we saw with WAR where Europeans were run by GOA and had about as much chance of getting any of their issues sorted as the US of winning the World Cup.

lets hope we see soon some good beta leaks who show how bad the game really is.

As far as we know there are unicorns, and everyone gets free chocolate.  Once your spot is done, they give free sedatives and a bus pass to Oklahoma.

There was a Site with Beta Leaks which was removed and well , all the comments hinted at the exact opposite.

Same Beta Leaks affirmed what Swanea said. You get 2 Random Classes and the first 7 levels. Once you are done , you are OUT.

While I have much more faith in Bioware than I've ever had in Cryptic the experience I got beta testing STO made me promise to avoid all kinds of video game testing in the future, I'd much rather get as much enjoyment out of them as possible once I purchase for myself and again I know Bioware won't do as bad as Cryptic but anyone who played that shallow game for a month can probably understand what it was like to go through three months of toon wipes and starting that shallow pos over and over again.  By the time the game finally released I was so sick of the repetition I never got to max level it was too one dimensional.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

The "Beta Test" as a phase has, over the decade, morphed into a marketing phase rather more than a testing phase.  It's smart of BioWare to redefine their processes. I think Turbine was the first developer to understand this fully when they released LOTRO to Alpha and Beta. Both phases showcased a game that was nearly ready to launch so that the impact of the inevitable leaks by testers was far  more positive than negative.

Any developer these days that releases a subpar game to beta testing phase and expects people not to squeal is naive in the extreme.

As someone said before, this aint "Beta" testing.  They are calling it Game Testing.  There is a difference. In certain other games, when you got into a Beta testing stage, you were in for good.   The Game Testing that Bioware are doing appears to be limited to a specific time frame with the possibility of being recalled into another game test later.

"When each testing session ends, will the chosen players be able to test again?

Our approach is to have new testers for each testing session. That said, players who give excellent feedback or find and report good bugs may be considered for additional testing sessions."

People were allowed to register for Game Testing from last Sept, but actual invites were only sent out a few weeks ago I hear.
