I've never had any issues with PlayOnline. Remembered that retarded password they GAVE me for some strange reason. Still remember it to this day and it's been over a year and a half since i've needed to use it. I just didn't understand why PlayOnline was at all necessary. A simple launcher client does the trick just fine.
In Japan they had a number of games that all launched through POL if I recall. It wasn't just for FFXI.
Of course for us over here it was redundant since none of those games were ever released here which is why it seemed so frustratingly pointless.
But yeah either way it's gone now with XIV. I doubt whatever they replace it with could be worse. Hopefully it's just a typical simple launcher/updater like most MMOs use.
It has been stated that there will be no more PlayOnline launcher. I do not know what will take its place.
Let's hope its not worse than Playonline...if that's even possible.
yea and no playonline = no 360 version 2 yay
Not necessarily, if it's going to work on the PS3 it COULD work on the 360 also. PO has/had nothing to do with that. IMO it's probably just sony trying to keep it's goodies away from microsoft.

How the hell do you figure that?

I could be wrong but I think POL was the reason that FFXI could run on SE's servers through XBox Live. Microsoft seem to hate letting anything running on 360 access servers outside of MS's own network. I'm pretty sure that's the reason we're not seeing XIV on 360... that and MS would want to charge a gold sub for it on top of the game subscription.

Yea they ditched PlayOnline for FFXIV.

I once tried to return to FFXI but that wish shattered at play online

They had play online before the 360 version of FFXI even came out.
