I'm going to ask this on the official forums (once my ID is official there) but figure I'd ask here as well. So I played the game at release but due to life had to quit shortly after. Anyway since nothing out there is grabbing my attention lately I figured I'd give AoC a shot again. Picked up the expansion and going to see where it leads.
So on to the question at hand. Just how bad are the PvP servers these days for someone starting new? Is it horrible with all the high levels just waiting to gank, or is it tolerable understanding I'd be killed here and there.
If they're really bad, is there any PvP happening on the PvE servers? Reading the official forums it seems as if sieges and such are virtually non-existant (but always hard to guage).
I'd love to get some input on the servers these days. I remember at release it was hard, but not inpossible, but then again, there weren't any 80's running around there either.
Thanks in advance

Hi
For beginners its always good to start on a PvE server for several reason. You will be able to quest in piece and to familiarize your self with the game withouth the constant fear of ganking and griefing. Once you get to know the mechanics of the game and your character you can try creating a toon on a PvP server to see how it is there.
The problem here is not really the high lvl chars ganking lower, but the difference in skill between newbies and veterans. Other aspect is that on a PvP server is always good to play at least with one or more friends in a group, as it is going to be easy to defend against other players, which in most cases also move in groups.
There is PvP in PvE server. The only difference is that there is no World PvP. You can go fight in the Border kingdoms or duel with friends in arenas or siege. And play mini-games 6v6 (which is like Battle Grounds to understand me )
A lot of changes to the game and system so again, my recommendation is to start on a PvE server to see how the game had changed, and then you can always try creating another char on a PvP server.
For those people that always complained that pvp wasn't hardcore enough, there are AoC pvp servers.
You WILL get ganked and ganked often.
You WILL have to look over your shoulder 24/7.
That being said, there is pvp on the pve servers though it is mostly in the minigames. Sieges are infrequent, at least on Wiccana, but when they do happen it's a mass flurry of pvp activity.
I'd strongly recommend starting on a pve server, so you can get the basics down and figure out which class you enjoy the most.
The populations on the PvP servers are falling thanks to funcoms mishandling of the Shrines of Boring and no new interesting PvP Content, best to roll on a PvE server they are doing the best these days.
if you are worried about getting ganked on a pvp server then just roll on a pve server. once you'v levelled up pay your 25$ and transfer to a pvp server. very simple
pvp server have a lot of ganking. WS is still full of level 24s with pvp level 4 and up. from level 20esh to 30sh you wont find too much ganking in the old world but if you decide to go to Khitai form level 30 to 40 you will see a rise in ganking. it gets pretty quiet again from 40 to 60 since most people just dont roam the old world zone much anymore. 60 to 70 might see some more ganking wile questing in Kesh but nothing like it used to be.
i must admit that a lot of player are bussy in Khitai these days so ganking lowbes in the old world is not as frequent as it used to be.
Shrines of Bori have been tweaked since release so ignore some peoples complaints about that. PvP will always be a continuous process of "tweaking" whether it be in AoC or any other MMO.
That maybe so but you still have whole guilds running around out there in pvp 8+ gear with full AA tables, good luck taking on those guilds!
It only took funcom over a month to fix this issue as well!
While I think the whole CE "rock farming" was a rather dumb way to get pvp gear, you can definitely kill rock farmers with a good raid. Most rock farmers have little to no experience in pvp. At least this is the case on pve servers (ala Wiccana).
On a pvp server vs the hard core pvpers that control CE, I would expect a very different outcome. So in a sense, you are correct actually.
