A pent IIII 3.0 Ghz CPU OC'ed to 3.4 Ghz is what I use and it is speedy and stable with my P4C800-E ASUS. A BFG Tech 6600GT is the greatest budget card out there now.

I wouldnt spend $$$ on a new processor, just overclock it some.

Video card, if you want to go cheap, get a nvidia from www.newegg.com. Or if you want to spend a little, Get a ATI 9600xt, thats what i have now and it looks great, about $160.

Get a AMD64- they are far better in gaming then the P4s are. 6800 Gt- get the cheapest, they all perform the same.

I have a 6800GT and I love it. My brother has a 6600GT and he loves his too. I have heard some good things about the 6200 as well, and you can get those in the $100 range, plus there are some interesting tweaks that can really upgrade the performance of the 6200 it seems (don't have one, so I haven't tried this personally).

    6200 AGP for $102 from newegg.com

amd 64 fx is currently the best processor out there, but it costs a lot (according to my budget). if you want something cheaper, I'd go for a amd 2400+/2800+.

some goes for the videocard: a radeon x850 is the best at the moment followed closely by the radeon x800/ geforce 6800ultra. but they too cost a lot. a cheaper sollution is taking a radeon x700 or a geforce 6600

A lot of the things being suggested here, while good in their own merit, are just not necessary, as they would require basically building a whole new computer from the ground up.

A 2.66GHz Pentium 4 should be more than sufficient for whatever it is you are doing (although I'm an AMD girl myself - but that would require a whole new motherboard).  Your problem is with your video card.  Simply upgrading that will net you some serious performance increases.

Assuming your MX440 is occupying a true AGP slot, my suggestion would be to replace it with something of the Radeon 9xxx series.  Any of them would be better than what you have now, though I would go with a Radeon 9600 or 9700 card if you are under a tight budget.  Either card supports DX9 natively and will serve you well.  If money is no object, but you don't want to replace your computer, then go for the Radeon 9800 Pro.

You probably can't overclock your processor. I'm not sure about Sony but Gateway, Dell, and other major companies lock the bios so it can't be overclocked.
