On an off note: Have any of the MMO-watching newsfolk compiled a list of companies and their stances on privacy? After Blizzard's spectacular trust fail, I'm pretty wary of all my existing titles right now. I'm reconsidering some of the ones I have, waiting to see what they have to say on the whole thing.
Anyway. Here's what I'm looking for, anybody know if it exists?
Non co-dependant: Doesn't force you to group, but lets you group with people whose company you actually enjoy.
Non-frenetic: None of that glued-to-the-keyboard 'OMG!' stuff. Skill is good but so is taking a breath and taking a break. Examples of bad: FFXI (OMG DON'T BREAK CHAIN!) Puzzle Pirates (NO bathroom breaks till we get Kraken's Blood or it's the plank for you!) Action is good but it shouldn't be a huge big deal to look away from the screen or get out of your chair for a few minutes once in a while.
Relaxing: Has some options for just vegging out, like a crafting system or things to gather, for times when I'm burnt from work. But also has plenty of exciting things for when relaxing = making things die.
Easy on the camera: Camera angles are good, but my best playmate has a hard time with the ultra-3D stuff, like the EvE camera swing (which is the least of my problems with that game). 3D is good, but if it swings around too fast she's gonna get motion sick.
Pretty but not overworked: There's a balance to be struck between beautiful scenery and unnecessary video-card-dragging effects. I don't need the horse to be sparkly and have a cascading particle effect, thanks. But I love me a good sunset.
Can be played in short chunks or long stretches: Sometimes I've got an hour or two. Sometimes I've got all weekend. If I have to travel 30 minutes to get to somewhere to even START playing, that's a dealbreaker. If I can't safely log out within 20 minutes of my blackberry going off, that's a dealbreaker too.
And here's the big one: It's possible to find pleasant people there. I really can't slog through hordes of 'STFU NOOB!' anymore. I get enough to threaten my ability to withstand humanity in my daily work, I don't need more of it at home. I don't mind the adrenaline junkie kids, as long as I can steer clear of them. I do mind when it starts looking like people with minds and manners have gone extinct. As long as I'm likely to run into one or two of them once in a while, I'm good with it.
Any suggestions?

Lord of the Rings Online. Meets every one of your points!
EQ2 or Lord of the Rings Meet what your looking for.
Give each a try. They both have trials.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
What the heck, come join me in Earth Eternal, has a pretty mature crowd (due to strong moderation) and hey, you can actually play it for free w/o issue. (not the best for PVP though)
But if you want real depth, go with EQ2 or LoTRO as others have recommended

Vanguard has a great community but small. I really enjoyed the PVE dungeons and stuff in this game. It probably has a free-trial so you may want to check it out. You may like AoC too?

Honestly? It sounds to me you need to find a new gnre of game. The MMO genre has turned into exactly that thing you really do not want to touch or handle. So I do understand your pain. Just a thought - But you would probably be better off playing on a console or a table top form of game.

Good to know, thanks! Last I hard of LoTRO was just after launch, and I heard it was struggling. I guess I was kinda unfairly biased, too, I've run into so many Legolases in other games, they were generally really obnoxious and hard to deal with, and I think I kinda expected them all to be clustered there
One thing though-- doing a quick search, I find a community representative post saying there's no concensus in the game company as to whether or not they'll follow the Blizzard model and expose their community. That kinda bodes ill, but I'm glad they at least talk about it. Eh. Private life = private to me, I don't really get those people who live their whole lives in public. Real life is for public consumption so private life being just for me is pretty important. I have a lot of sympathy for the people raising a ruckus about all that.
Thanks for the tip, though, once they make up their minds I will check it out!
(to the other person-- yeah, I might have to abandon MMOs because so many of them ARE heading in this direction, but I was hoping someone like the above posters might actually have experience with a game that bucked the trend and could give me the heads-up from within. Games are almost never what they appear to be on the surface.)
Free trial is not an issue, I should have included I really don't care if it's P2P or F2P.
Can you tell me a bit more about the Vanguard community? Anything I can't find out on the webpage would be helpful
Yeah the best game that would describe what you are looking for would be EverQuest 2. There is a 14 day free trial, and if u decide to give it a try be sure to pick a more active server.
Awesome. Thanks for all the help-- found some other posts with more on Vanguard too. I'll give EQ2 another look, and once LOTRO comes out with a position on the whole privacy thing I'll give it a try if they come down on the privacy side.
Much appreciated.
