Remember, the actual crafting system is still under NDA and so is most of the crafter's skills. This was simply an informative article for those who haven't actually been able to do much research. Granted, most people that come here usually spend a bit of time researching the games they're interested in. However, there are still people out there that just don't. This was aimed at them. My next article is a bit more toward the informative side.
This was just an introduction to FFXIV's unique crafting system, to attempt to grab a few people's interest. Just take it for what it is.

Because Star Wars Galaxies didn't have this 7 years ago, right?
SWG had one character per server aswell and people still played straight crafter.
Yep, I was a Chef and had no time for adventuring anyways, that process was so complicated, lol
Yes, but in SWG you could have as many characters as you wanted, just on different servers, heck I had at least 6 in SWG, while that is not the case with FFXIV, you get one character and have to pay for additional ones.
That is good that they don't limit having multiple skills, so you can mix trade with other skills if you have time. It would have been nice if the article mentioned that important fact. My bone of contention was the poor article, not the game. I have some good friends that swear by the previous generation of the game and they are avidly looking forward to this one.
Your one character can be all the jobs. You change jobs by changing your weapon. You can level every job/class to max. This makes having more then one character usless. Just people the race that you like the best.
"Square-Enix has brought these jobs into the mainstream, by actually making them playable classes"
You seem to forget that only one character per account makes the content of this statement a bit silly. Sure some people will invest in multiple accounts or pay for extra character slots, but for the most part I doubt many will make a strictly trade character unless of course they make the silly requirement that a tradeskill is a main profession.
Since when is a blacksmith not an armorer? Another dumb example of adding too many trade skills to a game. Blacksmiths deal in anything metal except for the finer things like jewelry.
About all this article does is basically list the trade classes. It seems that little information is available to discuss what they can make. You could have done that in a few paragraphs. I did not find this article very illuminating at all.
Where is your discussion on gathering, you put it in the title and then nary a mention in the article?
All this article does is raise questions, it certainly does not answer many.
You really need to research the game before making a statement like that. Your one character can switch classes by equipping another weapon, there is no need to multiple characters. Yes its still possible to have more characters by purchasing another slot for those that MUST have more characters.

That brings up a whole new set of problems item storage. so with x number of jobs x number of sets of equipment x number of normal ingrediants you think a single character will have the storage space needed to do everything your mentioning ? how many sets of armor diffrent weapons/tools stacks of ingrediants do you think a singel character on a single account can hold. is storage infinate ? or is it limited ? if it is infinate then yea picka race and play to your hearts content. if it's limited and i find myself in a situation where i have to limit my choices more and more as i get more stuff because i need that stuff to play all these options then that becomes not so cool really fast.

I dont see why the devs wouldnt make adequate storage space available to you. Seems like a pretty trivial thing to be concerned with before even playing the game.

And herein lies the crux of the problem....
Why do people feel the need to have to create alts, or level every single class? I always hated the fact that in some games, people would just create alts to create their items. It creates a very closed economy that ends up becoming stale. If companies took a more straightforward approach and made crafting classes a MAJOR decision....then it would really open up the possibilities for true economies to flourish.

perhaps im confused, wont all the serious players just max all crafting class on each toon, thereby removing the need to interact with other players?
i hope im wrong, cuz this is a crafting killer, unless you are the type of player who simply enjoys selecting names and placing them in queues, rather than one who likes competing in a regional/world market....

There will probably be a cap so you will end up having to pick one to master and others to sub.

If the rate of Skill increase for Crafting is anything like FFXI, and the expense, this is a much bigger undertaking than you might think.
Plus, there will always be people who simply do not want to bother with gathering and crafting.
However, I do agree that the potential seems to be there to create an environment where no one needs anyone else...which seems contradictory to the desired atmosphere of an MMORPG.

FFXI was my 1st MMO and FFXIV will most likely be my last. I hate to say it but here goes. I see similarities between the system in FFXIV and Darkfall. No levels, any job and craft is available and I like that idea. You can do anything if you put the time into it. Great concept and should allow for endless amounts of time sink. Those of you complaining about only 1 character slot please consider this.... you spend the same amount of time online lvlng craft or weapon skills why would you need 2 or more characters? Other than storage it's pointless to have more than one character.
As i see it we have 1 characther we play whit 2 or more main proffesion u like the most to delv deep into and pay 1$ for every retainer u need to stockpile gear/items crafting tools and whatnot and use 1 retainer or more as shops to sell your stuff
Retainer will become just a fancy name for a mule, that is what my impression of the info so far about the skill/crafter system is been setup , but after the game is played on for a few months the system will either sucssed or fail, time will tell.

So, you can be everything in real life as well. Does that mean the market is flooded with everything all the time? Just because everyone CAN be everything, doesn't mean everyone WILL be everything. I barely craft in any MMO I play. I gather for resources to have other crafters make items for me or to sell for quick cash, but never waste my time crafting myself. But every MMO has given me the option to do so.
Lets not get our knickers in a bunch and understand that there is a beta for a reason and hopefully those that got picked to beta test are doing their jobs and actually resolving said concerns if there are any.

I really don't think it will be that simple to max out the crafting classes.
so each character can be all crafting classes? doesent this kind of kill the world economy? perhaps im confused, wont all the serious players just max all crafting class on each toon, thereby removing the need to interact with other players? i hope im wrong, cuz this is a crafting killer, unless you are the type of player who simply enjoys selecting names and placing them in queues, rather than one who likes competing in a regional/world market....

I don't think it is ever a good idea to make the crafting skill system too simplistic or easy. Usually players don't bother with crafting or gathering in an mmo because either it is too simplistic or irrelevant to the game world as a whole or because currency farmers allow players to buy whatever debasing any crafting or gathering system a game may have. By requiring effort to advance crafting SE open up the non-combat sphere to mmo gameplay.

Cooking is always the one crafing skill I gain in games that have it. I can see myself being a culinarian.

come on SE, lift that damned NDA, we wanna some real info about crafting process, its already almost only 2 months till release
Not meaning to sound like a jerk, but this article had no info that's not on the official site for ages by now. Not worthy of a news feature at all.
