I'm amongst those who started playing FF from grey square nintendo. I always really enjoyed the franchise and bought every games until now. But I also am amongst the people who started disliking the series from FF12 and got disappointed from linearity of FF13 (yes, best graphics ever, but that doesn't make a good game).
My question is addressed to people who played FF from at least FF7 or before and who also played latest versions (FF12-13 with same disappointment as me) and played FF11 (I haven't tried this one).
How's your hype for this release? Do you think Square Enix is going in line with FF12-13 or can we expect to get a good combination of all the best elements of all their previous games? (mini-games/cards/blitzball, freedom of movement, airship/boat!, sidestuff to do, etc.)

I started from FF 2(the USA #2) and then went back to play the first one on NES. I've played em all but #8. Personally I liked XII and had only 1 small problem with it and thats the way you purchased your skills. XII also gave me a feeling of playing a offline version of XI with the huge map and combat. FF XIII was ok for me, I didn't like the linearity of it but enjoyed the story and graphics. I wouldn't say I'm hyped but more of the excited about this game. The thing is you can't compare the offline FF games to the online versions, they will be completely different. If you played XI you will get a feel of how this game will be.
I have played every FF game across every platform ever made, in japanese and english versions.
FF11 from the typical MMO player perspective was absolutely horrible.
I am not going to get into some huge flame with with FF11 fanboys over the style of this game. It was very grindy and group oriented. Super expensive for items and it took square WAYYYY to long to try and remedy the problems riddled in this game. I played FF11 about a year, and I went back to it several several times throughout the years hoping it would catch my interest.
That never happened.
As far as FF14 is concerned, I am already steering clear of it, my main complaint is the sheer laziness and/or square trying to appease FF11 players by keeping the character models for the characters exactly the damn same. Sure they boosted some graphics and did some fine tweaks, but a hume is a hume and a mithra is a mithra, regardless of what you rename it.
Since we don't have a large amout of gameplay info to base any opinion on, I can't say that I would hate it, but it looks not much different from 11 aside from the devs stating it will be more solo friendly.
Taking away individuality also kills it for me as well. If any character can play any role just by changing a weapon, what really makes you unique inside the game world? Nothing.
Cliques will form, and many players are going to be left out in the cold begging for groups. It is going to be some crazy elitest bs just like FF11 was.
My hype level for this game is a -6.
Anyway, I hope I am wrong, and it turns out to be a phenominal game, but I am not holding my breath.
I played FF6-12+tactics advance and enjoyed most of them. FF7 just seemed over hyped to me and I couldn't stand the bad broken english translation of it, but i can see why everyone else likes it...
I love the Final Fantasy series. I also love how it has pretty much invented the video game RPG genre, from simple dungeons and dragons on a TV screen to the epic storytelling we demand from all RPG's now a days, it's amazing.
That being said, it's too bad you didn't play FFXI, it was pretty much a celebration of all Final Fantasies into one game up to that point. It had the mini-games, freedom of movement, airship/boat, and lots and lots of side stuff. It also had a bunch of stuff right out of old school Final Fantasy, like skilling up your weapons, summoning, the look of all the AF armor, epic story, and Chocobo's! From red mages, to dragoons, to dark knights it had nearly everything from old school FF. It even required you to be in a group to kill most mobs and get xp, just like the other FF games always have you in a group (like my favorite Squall, Zell, Rinoa combo). And the community was just so helpful!! I remember getting help with things from random strangers like all the time, and they got nothing out of it! You can't get that in today's mmo!
With FFXIV you can expect a combination from ALL the other final fantasies, just like FFXI did. I also hope for that wonderful FFXI community. I think it'll be there since the Leve system sounds like it was made just for them! haha.

I started playing the FF series at IV (2 in the US). I have played every one since that point, and many of the other FF titles (such as Tatics). I wound up trying 11 for a bit, but the game was far too old school for my tastes. Sitting around waiting for a group wasn't fun.
I am moderately excited for XIV. I like that you can become literally any class by weapon selection, this feature reminds me of the Tactics Job system to a degree. However, whether I actually give the game a shot or not depends on how many of my friends wind up trying it.
I would actually like to see a gameplay video from someone who is very familiar with the control scheme. I don't mind slower pace combat as long as it remains interesting.
I am glad this topic is giving mature opinions without troll/flame, thanks for the replies. Of course it's still open for more
i played FF1 and FF5~FF12
11 is my favorite mmo it had great story even better than some offline FF
i cant talk about 13 since i havnt played it yet
my thoughts about 12: great fighting system , bad charcters (save balthier) , decent story
overall i enjoyed it although i expcted the worse after reading few reviews.
14 development team will be
art design e by Akihiko Yoshida (FF12 , tactics..ect)
director Nobuaki Komoto (directed 9 and some of 11)
music by Nobuo Uematsu ^_^
story by Yaoko Sato (CoP expansion in 11 known as best one storywise atleast)
as you can see 14 isnt short of talented people
the game got potional but i will treat it like any other mmo
low expections at start
my punches are as strong as kicks
I always played FF games but was hooked in FF from the moment in 4 when the twins turned to stone of their own free will. Since then I am a bit more open to FF games and my willingness is probably a bit higher than with other titles. FFIX was a fun game for what it offered, there were parts I felt needed improvement but I still felt it very much a part of the FF mind set. I really feel FFXIV will be an amazing addition to the illustrious list. Already spent some time and money upgrading my PC to handle the requirements at an enjoyable state. Hype is hype, but for me this one is staying ahead of the hype pool.

I liked 7,8 and 9 because of the art style and you can still go back to them today and they don't feel that dated. However I've grown up alot since then and the story that once seemed good now seems really poorly written and very cheesy. I haven't been able to like a new FF since because I've come into them as an adult and they just seem stupid. The really bad voice acting kills them too, I wish they got rid of it and went back to text, couldn't stand to listen to Tidus or the red head girl in FF13. Also a factor is Japanese games aren't innovate anymore, they've become stale and lag far behind what the western world is doing.
FF14 interested me because the one good thing about Japanese games is they don't bow down to the casuals. You know you'll get a hard experience with a Japanese MMO. However the art style puts me off, there is no jumping, the races look stupid, the combat system is slow, the UI is clunky etc etc.
I remember being in target, had to be like 9 or 10, and BEGGING my mom for that purble box with the moogle on it. I had played FF4 previously, and loving everything about it, from the characters selfless sacrifices to Kain's back and forth before deciding to be a good guy. Oh, and Rydia coming and saving your ass when you first enter the dwarven kingdoms. However, FF7 was the first one I saved up for all summer working some terrible gardening job. I plugged it in day one, and started playing. All of a sudden, my mom walk into my room and goes "What the hell are you doing? Have you been up all night?" It was the next day, and it was time for school.
I never even bothered to finish any of them after 9. Sad that the graphics ended up destroying the characters. Maybe they didn't, but I can't help but make that correlation.
I'm a MUDder. I play MUDs.

I actually enjoyed FF12, but it really felt like it was an RPG built in the world of 'Vagrant Story' (another great PS1 title by Squaresoft) more than a final fantasy title. A lot of its developers, music composer, etc were involved. It's plot was much more mature and grand in its scope....lots of politics, etc.... Just a completely different feel from Final Fantasy.
However, i hate to say it, but FF13 was the prettiest game I wish i never bought....ever. It actually would have been better off as a movie. It really felt like involvement was an afterthought, or I was watching a DVD that forced me to un-pause itself every few seconds (one button action)
I have played just about every FF that has been released. love all up to X for solo, and FFXI was pretty cool. My Wife and I were engaged a 'Dear Friends' Concert and our wedding music was all from various FF's...so we really like the earlier games (its also how we met). So, shooting one down so harshly is saddening.
Seriously, I think they are being cheap in that the races are recycled. I say cheap, because I think the development of FF13 drained so much of their budget that they HAD to recycle as much art and concepts as possible from FFXI when thinking about FFXIV. I imagine they cannot really update FFXI, it being spread over various systems, including older consoles.
I kind of think, production wise, that FFXIV is a 'new upgrade for FFXI, which a more casual audience in mind. Will it suck, I don't know. But saying I don't know is kind of significant, in that 10 years ago, I would answer 'No way' to the same question about any final fantasy title.
We still pre-ordered two CE copies. However, if this one blows as hard as FF13...it will likely be the last SE title we pre-order :-(

I own all the FF games and have played them all
The FF series had a really good soryteller/producer for 1-7 and 9 called Hironobu Sakaguchi.
His goal was to tell the players a story and get the players involved in the characters, and thats what made those game so good. After 9 Another producer took over that focused on graphics and clothes on the characters, which is very noticable on 10,12 and 13 totally forgeting the main thing about Final Fantasy.
The best FInal Fantasy games are Tactics, 6, 7 and 1
This guy knows his FF.
I also consider the vesr FF games to be Tactics, 6/3, 7 and 1 in that order.
My favorites is FF 6,7 and Tactics in that order
None of my hype for this game is based on their single-player games.
I'm interested in this game for two reasons: 1) S-E is well-established (and possesses enough brand-value) enough that they probably wouldn't want to risk putting out a genuine turd, or bank their profits on just initial box sales, and 2) Love or hate their products, they have a fairly solid track record for putting out refined products. I'm not expecting perfection on day one, but there are far too many games being released too early these days. I can at least have some hope that this won't be one of them.
A Modest Proposal for MMORPGs:
That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.
I am a old fan of Square Enix games as well. I would have to say the Square Enix game I liked the best would have to be Chrono Cross then FF7. Now if they incorporate elements from pass games I for one wouldn't mind. Let's just wait and see how FFXIV turns out.
skeptical about that op. There will nvr be another ff like the old ones. theyve mayed it clear that they have no intention of returning to its roots
As someone who has stopped playing FF games after 9 (I skipped 8 because of all the emo crap), I'm not sure about this game. I am sort of looking forward to it but I realize that it will never live up to the FF classics.
Mostly, I'm looking forward to this because I never really got into FF11 and want to see what the fuss is all about.
Ever since the word 'Enix' was added, its been a gradual, but consistent, downward spiral for the FF franchise...
FFX was teh last, amazing title in this series. I will be amazed if anything gets back to that level again :-(

I've been playing since the 1, but I didn't really get hooked until 3 (US). I very much enjoyed all of them except 13. I just can't bring myself to play anymore of it. I don't think it's a "bad" game, I just have no interest in it. It doesn't feel like Final Fantasy to me.
11 was also a disapointment for the most part (IMO). I still played and I enjoyed it for what it was, but really... the controls ruined it all for me. It felt like a bad port, and it never aged well.
I am only hyped for 14 because I believe SE will put out a quality product - one worth the price, which is something we don't see much of anymore.
And I really, REALLY hope the controls are better this time around.
I don't think the OP was interested in what we felt about the other FF games.. I think he wanted feedback on what we thought of FFXIV and wants to know if its anything like FF1-13 (excluding FFXI). I might be wrong, but I think this is what he wants to hear:
FFXIV will be nothing like FF1-FF13. Those games are stories wrapped single player controlled combat situation. If you have never played an MMORPG before, then you will probably LOVE FFXIV just like everyone who starts with their first MMORPG loves it and puts it very highly. Compared with other MMORPGs though FFXIV is looking to be just slightly above average. The battle style will not be auto-attack based, meaning you can't just click on "attack" and expect that the steady stream of hits without your intervention will kill the mob.
Like in FFXIII you will have to imput your moves, and these moves will take up a certain amount of your attack bar. You will regenerate that bar at a certain pace during battle.
Like in FF Tactic, specialy Crystal Cronicles, you will be able to learn skills from one of the other classes and equip it to your main class, as long as you have enough, of what is called Action Points to assign it.
Like in all FF games, you will see: Cid, Summons, Chocobos, Airships. That is pretty much where the similarities will end. The story is unlike any of the games, and instead of you being the "main" character that does everything to save the world, you have to share your glory with many other players doing the same thing. If you are one of the lucky and hardcore players, then yes, you will be able to take 14 of them with you and possibly destroy the big bad thing that this time around is trying to kill you and destroy the world.
So, in conclusion, if this will be your very first MMORPG, your virgin online playing fingers are going to be enjoying the ride until you decide to see what other MMORPGs taste like. And even then, you will probably come back over and over again to this, your original MMORPG.
Welcome to an addiction most of us are happy to have. ^_^
