There is some good stuff in this one, like the once again confirming that FFXIV is being targeted at the FFXI veterans, the story taking up to a year to complete, how horrible the Playstation 3 is to program for and why its version is being delayed, and most of all; the WoW babies crying about how they want FFXIV like that and SE are like," whatever, we're doing it our own way!" ...rofl!
Final Fantasy XIV: Hiromichi Tanaka Q&A
We chat with Hiromichi Tanaka, producer on Squenix’s upcoming MMO
Why did you decide to create another Final Fantasy MMO at this time?
Final Fantasy XI has now been out for 8 years and is quite dated, from a technological perspective. So we decided to make a new type of MMO… There are a lot of MMOs in the market that have an open world and small quests, but they don’t necessarily have that huge story that we do. We’re trying to be different from those other games.
How important is the story to the game? How long will it take to see the whole thing?
Because this is an MMO, you don’t necessarily have to follow the storyline but we think you’ll have a much better time if you do... It depends how you level up your character but we believe it could take up to one year to see the whole story.
Do you fear that some MMO players, unfamiliar with Final Fantasy, might feel like they’re coming to the franchise too late to join in?
There may be some people who are unfamiliar with the series, and it’s very important that we communicate the game well to them. But our main target is Final Fantasy XI players who have stuck with us for eight years and want to proceed into the next generation of MMO.
How has your approach to MMO development changed alongside the market?
We had an alpha test for Final Fantasy XIV and received a lot of feedback from players in Japan, Europe and America. A lot of them said that ‘because World Of Warcraft works in this way then we also expect Final Fantasy XIV to play in the same way’. We heard that a lot and though we’re not trying to imitate any other games we are taking player feedback into account.
The PlayStation 3 version is arriving six months after PC. Why is that, and how will you handle things like expansion packs in the future?
We were aiming for a simultaneous launch but, unfortunately, it was not possible. The PlayStation 3 has a limited amount of memory compared to the PCs we’re aiming at. We have to optimise the data so that it will fit on the console and that’s taking a lot longer than we first thought… In the future, all updates and expansions packs will launch simultaneously, cross-region and cross platform.
At E3 this year there was a version of Final Fantasy XIV running with stereoscopic 3D visuals. What was the feedback to those tests?
At E3 we had a surround system with three screens in 3D, thanks to the support of Nvidia. Assuming that the player has the correct hardware, they will be able to enjoy the 3D in this way. As for feedback, because E3 was media focused, we didn’t get much player feedback but we do know that they are looking forward to it.
You’ve mentioned that users will be able to transfer some data from Final Fantasy XI to XIV. Can you clarify this, and will it apply to PlayStation 3 players too?
As the game itself is totally different, you won’t be able to simply use the same character between games but we consciously decided to include similar race styles in XIV so that XI fans could create a character very similar to their old avatar. But if you have a unique character name in XI then you will be able to transfer it to XIV. And yes, the account will allow you to log in on either PC or PS3.

Not a huge fan of the final fantasy games myself (prefer not to watch the long drawn out cutscenes myself because I don't really care about the characters) but am watching this closely. The only thing that really kept me out of FFXI was the whole not getting to choose your server to play with friends unless you pay an extra fee. If they don't follow that route it might be cool

Not being a WoW clone is a double edged sword.
there wasnt a fee your friend just had to buy an ingame world pass at first for you
ffxi is doing fine its not a wow clone. and if they cloned wow i wouldnt touch it with a 2 foot pull
The OP just spouted some unnecessary anti-wow comments but the rest of the post is good.
Too bad comments like this are derailing the post from its main topic though. FFXIV really looks awesome.
I think he doctored it lol. I remember reading one that looked the same and there was nothing about WoW in it. Some one have a good link to the original interview, I want to see if that was said or not. Not that I did not enjoy a lot of what WoW had to offer but this is a different game like some one else put it double edge sword.
Here is the source and it says just that, and I speak the truth anyway....the WoWbies are complaining all over how they want it more like WoW, even on the beta boards and this interview confirms what they're not saying on those forums, and that is pretty much too bad all you complainers that want this like WoW ...its not gonna happen. Go play WoW if you wanna play WoW ~ is how I see it...heh
I'm glad they're not pandering to WoW players and I'm also glad that those people complaining on these boards are not going to play FFIV.
Sorry mate just wanted to make sure, heck I don't wanted to be like WoW at all, I am tired of WoW after 5+ years of playing it I want something good, and I played XI before I played WoW and had a blast playing so I think I will attempt to play XIV and see if it is what I want to play. Hope to have a good time just like I did on XI.
heh i know what you mean ffxi is my favrite mmo. i just ran into money issues and time issues to keep playing xi then i decided tot ry wow and i think it jus tbored me out of my mind compared to 11
Unfortunately I already sense having to turn off general chat for at least the first month, due to what you mentioned, about the type of players that refuses to read the manual or do a little reasearch or goddess forbid experiment with a little trial and error to figure something out. Its going to be tons of players shouting how do I move, ugh WASD+Mouse doesn't work as good as WoW, how does this work, where are the ! & ? quests, what I have to read, oh my goodness I have to think also, I quit...this game sucks!
I guess I read the interview differently in that he acknowledged they heard often that players wanted certain aspects of WoW and they were giving consideration to that player feedback. But my guess is that the feedback is more along the lines of UI/comfort of play rather than actually wanting the game to be like WoW. Can there really be that many beta testers saying they want it to play exactly like WoW? But anyway, good for them if they are in fact giving consideration to making the game more playable with a mouse.
Yeah mouse support is big, I want working mouse when I play it at launch, of if not ready at launch shortly after. While I can do with out having to go into the action bar and click away at it with the mouse I like to be able to click on the monster and stuff like that as well as other parts of the UI.
Some of the better WoW features would be nice to have, but not necessary at all, this is not WoW and I don't want a WoW Clone. And this is not aiming at that whole WoW Killer thing. These are 2 different games and the whole aspect of it taking WoW down I dont think its entirely there goal (SE that is) so with that in mind we should only really see those that are pretty tired of WoW like myself.
It wasn't about making a WoW clone but, WoW did lots of things really well and set a standard. FF14 does a lot of things that feel backwards and aren't fun, so people were wishing for them to change it to like WoW. For example character and camera movement feels like it is designed for a controller, so people were asking that it controlled like WoW. Which makes sense because you don't want to feel like you're fighting the controls and WoW has done it best.
The hard part is to balance between doing your own thing and doing the WoW thing.
Well, now they're getting so much feedback that it's hard for them to not realize what they should be doing the WoW way and what not.
We'll see where that takes them.
What WoW thing?
Did Blizzard invent the MMORPGs?
Using a sword to hack at the mobs = WoW clone?
WoW this and WoW that shut the fuck up about WoW already.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
That's how it is, sorry to ruin your parade.
I feel sorry for you if the only online game that you can refer to is WoW and I think that you have actually ruined your own parade.

Everything is double edge sword.... Even single edge swords are a double edged sword. Can cut something with it, but the other side is kinda flat and doesn't really cut well. - Louis CK
Comparing shit to WoW is a mistake of customers. Just because a lot of them do it doesn't mean everything actually is trying to be like WoW. Also why new MMO's tend to suck, because customers start with the premise of either knowingly or unknowlingly comparing it to WoW. More or less because most people haven't played other MMO's for any significant amount of time, making their opinion on MMO's comepletely fucking useless imo.
MMOs before WOW were buggy, clunky, had bad UIs and controlled poorly. So WoW came along and showed everyone that they could have a standard like single player and normal multiplayer games. WoW has done alot wrong but lets not forget they did so much right.
This has to be the finest post on this entire board.
I can refer to DAoC too, but most people are more familiar with WoW. Whatever man, lol.
Yeah like I said, the line between doing your own thing and doing the WoW thing is thin.
Yeah you get the controls down, the UI down, then suddenly you start to do everything like they do.
Or then you do everything differently, and that's no good either. Maybe.
