MMORPG and Turbine Inc are pleased to present a special beta testing opportunity for our community. We will be taking entries into a random sweepstakes event from July 16 to July 22. We will select 2500 winners that will be granted access to The Lord of the Rings Online™: Free-To-Play Beta Test. In addition to this winners will receive a 1,000 point code for the store to allow you to experience the shopping system during the beta test (note that these point codes will only work during the beta test).

It seems both Vindictus and this start the same day, that could really hurt the tester numbers for this one :P
I really don't think it will hurt it that bad. There are A LOT of MMO players "between" games. So, I think there are more than enough to go around. Add to that...the games are fairly different and will attract somewhat different audiences.
Loose the Legion of the Perpetually Bored into Tolkien's cherished realm. It's the beginning of the end.

It would be nice to participate in beta. I hope we will see each other in middle-earth!
I've been playing a bit of DDO of late . It being free does'nt seam to have hurt their community at all . Its all still pretty helpful and friendly . I can recall such arguments being made when it went free to play . There will be a period of a few weeks were you may get some some stupidity but they'll all soon get bored . While Warcraft exists other games end up relatively free of undesirable behaviour simply because they don't appeal to the very young players or those that want a little more challenge in an mmo . The perpetually bored will soon do what they do best and get bored and go back to thier endless grind of battlegrounds and raids leave the LOTRO community as good as ever (just a little more vibrant) .
I've played LOTRO before, why would I want a beta key to a game I've played... the hell out of. Just because now I have to pay to do anything worthwhile in a game that's content was ultimately not that worthwhile?
Its mind bottling.
Is anyone forcing you to play the beta?
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
"bottling?" Really?
I've got the game, played it untill like level 15 and gave up. and now they're adding an itemmall to it ? Eeewwwww !!!
mind bottling?
Mind bottling LoL. I hope that was a joke from that horrible Will Ferrel movie, otherwise I've lost all hope for humanity.
Turbine has unleashed a darkness upon Middle Earth. Elves will flee and no Hobbit will be safe within his hole. Enter now for a chance at a front row seat to armageddon. Long Bottom Leaf and Dwarven Ale will be available at the Prancing Pony for a few Turbine Tokens.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Love this game, played it more than a year, 2nd best graphics on a mmo til this date..
only passed by AoC...
Great news it will be semi free, just like DDO.. Gonna get it again.

Lol @ the admin.
I honestly think it being f2p is going to make lotro that much more popular, theres so many incentives for current subscribers to stay subscribed as it is.
You're obviously not playing the game at the moment then or you'd know that it's going F2P on the Codemasters servers at the same as Turbine's. You could hardly miss the announcement telling you so every time you logged on recently.
Interestingly enough I saw "star wars galaxies free to play beta keys"
then clicked on this and it was LOTRO... which is ok, I am interested in LoTRO , anyhow, but it may not go f2p in time before I pick up the next game I plan to enjoy.
If any game needs to go f2p it is SWG, I wish that when i clicked on that it would have been SWG instead of some error.
I got in on this beta over at fileplanet yesterday, they are offering keys, I just signed up but did not subscribe, you get 1000 points to spend if non sub
It's worth noting that the points don't matter in the slightest - since no character will 'roll over' to 'real servers'.
Vindi... what, first time i hear about that?.... Lotro will be fine.
Hope you can make a lvl 65 character in beta with some good gear. Otherwise you are 'stuck' to test the low-level areas with this beta-account.
Yeeaaah...well for me, this is only incentive not to login my Lifetime account ever again, and never spend another nickel with Turbine. I'll let the rest of you play in a world populated by "XXHobbitDudeXX"s and "GankerDeathRouge"s. LOTRO's free trials were a preview of the calibre of playerbase Turbine fostered. In the end, it will be the same people who will be shelling out money. If they didn't pay before, they won't now and the game environment will suffer for it.

Agreed. All this new found population will be great for running Barrow Downs if you can stand the folks you will have to fellow with. The only effect this change will have on the higher level areas will be the lag people suffer. Bree will be a joke and as a former player on Landroval I can only wonder where the RP folks will go after the Prancing Pony becomes a gathering place for this new found fanbase. I didnt have a lifetime sub and payed quarterly but like you, Turbine has seen the last of me as well.

Whats the point of the beta key and how does it work? I have an old LoTR account, I got a beta key in the email, applied it to my old account but it still says I need to resub (pay) when I try and log in, so if I could pay to play right now anyway, whats the point of the beta key? or is there a new client I am suppose to download?
