It's so-so but, it's increasing at a steady rate. Once the expansion comes out in about a week there should be a surge of new and returning players. So try it out and I suggest joining a clan if you want to interact with a lot of other players.
The population is concentrated near the players cities, don't expect to find a huge number of players near starters cities. Join a clan and you'll have plenty of players to play with and against.

Just want to echo this advice. A big mistake one can make is to try and get a feel of DFO playing out of the newbie areas. If you can find a clan that welcomes newbies make the effort to get to its holding so you can experience the game from a player controlled area. Typically one can find lower level mobs mixed in to all areas of the map.

I always see lots of new recruits in NEW. As far as newbie areas, SOME newbies area..aka wolf and human lands...can be quite populated and riding through you may see quite a few people.
But, DF is very much clan based. I suggest joining NEW, having them set you up. They can be a great recourse if you use them.
At times I wish the population were abit lower so I can safely farm some of the better spawns in peace lol
Imo the population is fine the way it is now. There should be a good increase once these updates come out in the near future. Pvp is very easy to find if you know where to look.

PVP will find you whether you want it to or not just like it always has.
I haven't had a single PVE session without at least some PVP in a long long time.

Acutaly like most "good" games post initial luanch the pop is up and down. But there is always a population inlfux with each expansion.
As has been said before there is nothing on the market which does PvP as well. Many of the ADD kiddies are burning out on MO and we see many returns.
