hey, hate to say SoE had something right, but........../tell game.server.character. hmm, not on, /tell game.server.character2, etc.
if ppl want thier friends to know who they are in game they'll know. it was completely non invasive and sure as hell didn't cause this shitstorm.
Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed. Current mmo's grouping: tinder. swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.
Someone else propbalby said this, but the first thing that popped into my mind was - if I can't remember who "Thrall123" was after having not gamed with them for X years, I probably wouldn't remember who "Bob Smith" was either.
Have played: Everquest, Asheron's Call, Horizons, Everquest2, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall
A friend of a friend can see my real name, so i got no control who will see my name.
I intend to play Starcraft 2 (same thing with RealID there) and know from my Starcraft 1 "career" that very quickly you will be the victim of hatred. In SC 1 this already was annoying since you wouldnt change your ID once you got a reputation and some people talk crap about you, but it will be 1000x worse if some of those idiots know your real name. They can easily cyber stalk you, e.g. show fake photos post crap in your name etc. and --> they will be annonymous! <--
RealIID + "friend of friend" is totally unacceptable.
There is no right or wrong - There is only fun and boring.
Vivendi is Blizzards and Activisions boss.. Activision does not own Blizzard. But I am talking to a brick wall so lets leave it there.
RealID is optional and designed to be used with REAL friends and family.. why can people not grasp this concept? Is it too complicated for them?
Here.. what is next in the sequence.... 2,4,8,16,?

Two words for you. Marketing strategy.
In order for Blizzard to have a deal with Facebook, they evenutally will have to have an implementation to add Facebook members by their name. It will work the same way in reverse. The only way for that to happen is to have it show REAL NAMES. If you don't have real names then you can't cross add one from the other and vice versa.
It's about as meant for real life friends and family as I'm about to break into the rockstar lifestyle. Can't sing. Side issue.
It's optional FOR NOW. Until they settle ppl's qualms about it, then they'll (eventually) take away the old friends list and all you'll be left with is RealID. Exposing your real name and half your log in details.
My advice, stick with a messenger and social sites (if you use one). At least you get to choose your own name.

Again the purpose for REALID is not understood. When you add some one to your REALID list (AGAIN ITS DESIGNED FOR REAL FRIENDS, PEOPLE WHO ALREADY KNOW YOU PERSONALY) if they make a new wow toon and don't tell you their name it does not matter cus no matter what toon/server they are on you will see them online as BoB Smith.
Say you worked with some on for a time and both AGREED to add each other as REALID friends, then you leave the job and eventualy WoW and fall out of contact but then you buy D3 (when ever that is released) when you log into D3 BoB Smith will be there in your REALID list, a great way to catch up and play again together.
REALID is not a casual friends list, we have normal friends lsit for that.
A friend of a friend can see my real name, so i got no control who will see my name.

Sorry pal, but no ITS NOT OPTIONAL - at least in Starcraft, there is NO OTHER FRIENDLIST.
They have one more week to change this, but at the moment its NOT POSSIBLE TO TURN IT OFF.
If I can turn it off sure you are right then no biggy, but you actually cant.

A dev chat said there will be a regular friends list in SC2 on retial release, right now all we have is realID and facebook as that is what Blizzard wanted to test.
I got the best idea for the idiots that get hacked...
Use a secure password, like, algi51SFfsaon5910vssonwogns. I have never been hacked with such a password.
A password like this can take a computer well over a year to find if that computer does just that. Change it every 2 months.
Just note it somewhere, on a piece of paper, and type it each time you connect.
Also, quit going to porn and joke sites, they are the most at risk for keyloggers. It would also be a good idea to add a rule for the .cn sites to your hosts file as 90% of keylogging sites come from china. The government pays them to hack American companies, but surely some of those dont make the money they "deserve" so they attack any vulnerable target. WoW players being a simple one where plenty of money is available, also given the intelligence of 90% of the player base, which has to be below 90 in IQ terms, it makes it an even more attractive target.
Problem with Blizzard seems to be that they don't realize that some of us might be willing to add Thrall214 to our friends list and enjoy his company online but do not care to share any more personal information with him beyond our in game information. MMOs to me are about interacting anonymously with strangers through a virtual space.
Blizzard games do not have anything in common with Facebook and never will. Facebook and myspace are designed for people to meet real people. Blizzard games are to meet PewPewhunter the avatar who might ninja you as soon as help you, not John Smith the person.

Moved on to another MMO. I'm with Swanea and PhelimReaghon this one. Don't trust the path Blizzovision is going down. RealID will become mandatory, and due to exploits with the client and or add-ons somebody will get a hold of your real data and the expletive hits the wall from there. I just don't see this as a necessary thing for any game. Put more interesting content into the game, leave real ife out of it.

Again, maybe you didnt read my post: THERE IS NO OTHER FRIENDLIST.
Also its not true that at release of SC2 there will be an option to not show you real name! (thats not even discussed by blizzard)
Read your own link, then you will see its not even sure that at release the "friends of friends can see your real name" will be optional. In fact if you know how things work (only one week left till release and no sign of a change) and what post like the referenced ones mean "we plan .. to make it optional .. shortly after release .. tell you later" then I dont see any acceptable solution anywhere near.
here some of the blizzard statement you referenced:
"[..]so we plan to include an option that will allow players to opt out of appearing on their Real ID friends’ “friends of friends” lists. We're anticipating this feature to be available for StarCraft II shortly after release of the game, and World of Warcraft at around the same time -- we’ll have more information for you in the coming weeks."

There is a regular friends list in WoW and there will be one in SC2 on release next week, I dont care to hunt down the official post for you.
To make it clear both WoW and SC2 will have a regular friends list and a REALID friends list, again I stress REALID is optional, people added to your regular friends list will not reveal their real name.
As to friends of fiends - they plan to add the option of disabling showing friends of friends on the REALID friends list.... whats hard to understand?
I think Blizzard have only backed off for now . They will make it optional then manditory . All they are doing is changing tactic . Instead of a full on assault they are now doing it by stealth .
To me this was a clear indicator that Blizzard are losing touch . It was a major mistake and it makes me wonder how much longer before the WoW bubble will burst .
I'm gonna jump into this conversation to state my opinion on this matter.
Whenever i go on Facebook (yes i have one) i know that my real name will be posted. As they stated this when i signed up that it would be shown. However when you signed up for an Mmo somewhere in the ToS (i forget where) it states to not let any of your private information out, this normally restricts to not letting your username and password out but i saw that as any personal information which includes your name.
Now Blizzard is entitled to do anything in their game they want if they don't break any nation rules or violate their own ToS, which is a binding contract or so i've been told.
As long as it stays optional or you can select who see the name thats fine (i guess, i don't like it but thats user preference) but if it changes to mandatory and it's not clearly stated before they make this change, then i can see people having a case against this as suddenly thrusting your name out there without your prior consent is a problem.
As always this is just my view and opinion on things.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Will Real ID be used to help advertisors send millions of Blizzard game users even more spam they don't want?
Will Blizzard sell peoples real names to advertisors, or use peoples names to bombard them with ads in their emails or whenever they log on to battle.net?
Just a few questions not asked in the FAQ about this subject. I simply don't trust this. There has to be an underlying reason that in todays invironment of identity theft Blizzard is so determined to force people to give out their real ID's.
They claim the system is for real friends and family but already we know this is not what is being practiced, as it has been well published that guilds in WoW are requiring members to use this system.
Blizzard coul not even keep my account from getting hacked even though I never gave out my info to anyone. Now they expect me to trust them with my real name and not have my real ID get hacked? Thanks but no thanks.
Our spirit was here long before you

umm, shouldn't your RL friends and family members know who the hell your character is anyway?

Well yes the potential for identity theft and fraud is very real, and I am not certain that the business suits at Blizzard have thought the crime aspect of Real ID out properly. What they want is a FaceBook scenario where they can basically print money using their player communities ID, and this could be done by in-game advertising and out of game Emailing. You make/change your profile and targeted advertising hits you. it shouldn't be a surprise to average Joe WoW that Blizzard are looking to make money out of this, heck the cash shop for sparkly ponies put the writing on the wall for you guys there!

This REALID system just seems like an invasion of privacy. Guess this means I won't be coming back to try out Cata.
