I didn't read any of the posts except for the first few considering the already blatant hate against the sucess of WoW so I'll just address the original post. When was the last time you heard of a genre "dieing"? Besides the fact that it's among the most opulent genres I don't think any genre of game will ever come to a complete end. It's posts like these that are made out of dreams and hate and simply allow the few others who think like you to vent about nonsense.
The mmo genre is far from dying, it's got more players than ever before with f2p games gaining ground on the market share. Every year see's an increase in mmo players. In fact games in general are a market that's far from saturated. What was stereotypically a 'nerdy' hobby is now common place and the market expands with each generation.
P.S. Saying the mmo genre is dying because you don't like WOW is about as stupid as saying the fast good industry is dying because you're a vegetarian.
You an debat what you want diablo2 was not a massive multiplayer online game. And it was also not a permanent online world you just make a game and enter the game world when you finished your gameworld ceased to excist its gone forever hehe.
Mmorpg is world where many players can enter world or leave but that world is always online and even in most cases evolve.
That's the problem though... when Diablo II was first released it wasn't an MMO and yet by some of the things that companies are calling MMOs these days Diablo II could now be classified as one. The majority of people in WoW these days spend all their time in non persistant instances that aren't always online and yet no one questions that as an MMO staple anymore. I remember back when instancing was first introduced to the genre people argued over whether it had a place in MMOs as they were meant to be persistant. The concept of a persistant world has been gradually eroded by casual friendly MMOs for some time now though. The persistant world in WoW is little more than a glorified game lobby for most of its players these days.
I second this motion~ ;P
also someone said that diablo II wasn't "massive" 'less you counted "100 people to be massive" somewhere along those lines, Diablo II has thousands of players~ lol ;P
and IT IS arguable, and debatable, i dont necessarily think DII as a MMORPG, though it could be argued. It has everything that "defines" an MMORPG, word for word. Massive, Mulitplayer, Online, Role playing game. Does it not?
ps. Alberal said that, you didn't have to connect to the internet to play. And i agree, HAVING to connect to the internet is a defining key element in an MMO, my reason behind not thinking its a MMO personaly.
