It's hard to polish a warm turd.......but they sure try.
How's the MMO you made doing?
Oh. That's right.
Thats not a good argument at all to be fair. Just because you dont make games doesn't mean you can't have an opinion on them.
No doubt!
I don't know how to build a car. Does that mean I can't drive one and determine whether or not it performs up to it's advertised standards?
I think the point is more that the OP is beating a dead horse.
A lot of people don't like STO. Ok. Fine. We get that.
BUT, some people DO like STO, and they would prefer not to see "this game is shit" posts spamming the comments of every article vaguely associated with the game. If you don't like the game, don't play it, don't read about it, and don't waste our time reitterateing your opinion for the billionth time.
If it really bothers you that much that you are incapable of simply ignoring it, the get off your fat lazy ass and write your own Star Trek MMO. The dev tools are free. Just head over to http://www.microsoft.com/express and get to work.
And we are supposed to not be able to express ourt own opinions of the game simply because they are sick of reading that it sucks? Well maybe they should go and play the game. Ignoring the negative opinions is also an option as well as debating points made. Whining like a baby that someone's opinion doesn't matter because they never made an mmo is trollish and silly. BTW everything you said applies equally to those who like the game as those who dislike it. And actually since there are far more people who played it and disliked it than those playing and liking it I'd say they are a minority should expect it and react accordingly. Having said that Season 2 looks much better than any of the other upgrades they've done so far but still nowhere near enough to get my money again.
Hard to debate something when someone calls it a warm turd. That's not a negative constructive opinion, it's trolling...in my opinion. I love the excuse, if you love the game then go play it. Like I play it 24hrs a day, really.
Actually its fact. It might be a more brown and smelly discription, but maybe the guy figured the game wasted enough of his time already, he didnt feel the need to go into a long tangent explaining how he really feels. It is not trolling. this is indisputable.
"2) Negativity is perfectly fine and welcome on our forums. However, negativity without an opinion to back it up , such as, "This game sux!" is not acceptable, and is considered trolling.
Colloquialisms such as "DorkFail" for Darkfall also fall into this category. If you do not like a game, explain why. Posting that you do not like a game in most every thread about said game is also considered trolling, and is unnecessary. "
And you face a warning or a ban.
Depends on what the game/game company is and what mod is attending at the time. Thats been my observation anyway.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
LOL. .... STO is such an amazing MMO, ... I'd sell my life account to anyone who'd care to buy it. It will only be worth buying for an obsessive star trek fan though able to ignore how much better are other MMOs out there. I am not going to name them .. almost everyone knows them.
I am a casual gamer and an above average geek where Star Trek is concerned. I unsubscribed 6 weeks into the game after I blew through all the federation content and found a complete lack of content for Klingons. The season 2 additions are intriguing, but I'm unsure if it's enough to bring me back. STO is a good game, but lacks a lot of content.
Having not so long ago tried my own hand at the game.. it has it ups and down much like every game I have ever tested or played.. And I do alot of testing.
The Klingon content unlocks at lvl 5 for any Federation player.. not an all-together bad idea.. but the Klingon missions and story are or atleast were (as of April) very very limited .. though I do have to say the BOPs ( Bird's of Prey for the non-treker readers) are really a kick up from anything you have starting one in Federation. They really did a great job on the Klingon "wessels" (heh)
The game itself is playible and I can see how and where there would be a certain draw to serious Star Trek fans, saddly I myself am more a SW fan.. there were a very limited number of emotes, along with a the ability of /me type emoting.. I'm a roleplayer and these are the things I look for first... that and the ability to walk (Cryptic have not so long ago added a walk function to COH yay! - but inclined to believe thats more NC's doing)
Saddly though content wise I would have to agree this is a big let down and while I did have fun now and then while playing its unlikly its a game I will return to anytie in the next year..
On an overall rating scale I would have to give the game a 5/10 its playible I myself didn't encounter any bugs there were some cool moments.. but it wasn't enough to keep me there the new content susgested by Season 2 sadly isn't enough of a pull to draw me back and I doubt it would anyone else who left.. though.. "I have been known to be wrong... now and then"..
++ points to anyone that gets the reference at the end
While everyone agrees that any decent MMO is a "work in progress," that it's important for players to be patient and understand that it takes time to polish and improve any game while adding content and other embellishments, I think it's important for everyone to learn from experiences with other MMOs.
From a player's point of view (at least this player's), any MMO released when not ready for prime time but has high expectations and potential (Age of Conan comes to mind) should be set aside while the game is being worked on and eventually and hopefully achieve release quality.
STO, in my experience, is like AoC in that I left AoC after closed beta ended and, after trying a friend's "Champions On Line in space" (STO) shortly after commercial release decided not to play -- the reasons were the same for both -- the MMO was not ready.
AoC only recently came into it's own after a lot of work @ FunCom. I saved a ton of money waiting, buying the game box for $5 from a friend and a year's sub (with a ton of perks including TSW closed beta invite) for under $100US.
While STO is a different game, many, like yours truly, are waiting in the wings. Cryptic has a LOT of holes to fill in to bring STO into the viable juggernaut it should be. Cryptic, its supporters and its critics are all aware of what needs to be done to ensure STO's success. We're waiting, patiently. Season 2 is, at best "meh" ...
I am here to tell you that unless Crytic really gets with the program to establish STO as a viable entity, upcoming titles such as SW:TOR will crush any hopes of success for STO. Cryptic has about a year to get STO to where it has to be.
As a paying subscriber of STO and playing first as a Klingon for 2 specialties, then giving the Fed's a run (still playing the Fed just much more slowly lol), I do so for hope that the game gets better. While the content for the Fed is vastly more than the Klingon's storyline wise, the reason I started the Federation line was due to the long waiting times for PvP action that Klingons thrive on. I am trying various new lines of activities as a Federation player that Klingon can not, crafting (more like a ever lasting resourse gathering operation), and today I started on Tribble breeding. This is on a Commander 4 tactical, and yes I have plenty of missions to keep trudging through. Point of observation crafting items (see above discription) seems that you out pace the abilities at Memory Alpha (or the resourses to craft) as you level. Hence my slowing that down alot.
Will I have the patience to pay to play for 2 years so that this game reaches potential, or even what was advertised? Stay tuned Spider Fans!
