I hope they've learnt their lesson for TSW; I do have more confidence in Tornquist, the man behind The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, and his vision than in Gaute.
I agree with this as well, however Gaute hasn't been the one in charge for a long time. PvP part of AoC was actually in better state when he still held the crown.
I'm gonna take at least 6 months before deciding whether to buy Secret World or not myself.
Gaute had good idea's when it came to PvP and yes the PvP in the game was much better when he was in charge. I don't fault Gaute for what happened, but a rushed product and Dev's that have no talent. Just like a Didek the PvP dev, the guy is a complete joke, how long have sieges been broken? What about that great Bori system he designed?
To be perfectly honest from my information you should blame Gaute for what happened to AoC. The developement of the game took a great toll on the coders. due to forced overtime, constantly changing the work they done every 6. month. Gaute had a good vision, but he lacks the capacity to mix reality and vision together. Gaute also is the man behind the promises that never happened. Sieges was a thing that really should be great with the possibility to form formations and god know's what. Sieges have been crap from day one. The best thing that ever happened to funcom was that they got rid of Gaute. Nothing against the guy, but you don't put a guy like him in charge for anything. The criminal system was designed by Gaute, I still remember how he told us that this system would really bring fairness and a cool side story to AoC. How you could live your life as a criminal and really just be anyone you wanted too. The criminal system came and people quickly realized it didn't really work as good as it had sounded. Sure it did solve the low lever ganking, but now it was the low levels ganking higher levels instead, and if you fought back you would still end up as a criminal. Shrines of bori on paper also sounded ace, we all know how it went. Sieges which was one of the main parts about the game has been broken since day one. Funny enough before server merges they did manage to fix sieges on many servers, then the merge came and sieges was broken again.
The change of game director was a good thing, however how do you fix a broken game? AoC had so many huge problems that needed to be dealt with. The PvP before 1,4 patch wasn't really better, but it's easy to forget how things were back then and remember the fun. PvP back then was more fun due to more people to fight. Fighting the same guys over and over tends to become a bit stale and boring. The biggest thing that goes against AoC is the launch, it was launched too early. And according to rumours it was launched to help save the publisher from going bankrupt. The money generated by the aoc sales helped fund a few new games which all flopped and they were bought up by Square enix. If Funcom could have waited say 6 more months I'm sure AoC would have been a lot better, unless of course Gaute had decided to rewrite the entire game again.
PvP can not be fixed bcs its impossible for Funcom to fix the person in front of the screen...
The best PvP experience up today is still daoc bcs its not a criminal anarchic gang/warlords game driven by hate and hybris.
If the sheep can decide not go to the slaughterhouse they wont come^^
In Daoc you are a honorable warrior of your realm and ganking was impossible but now the game is old and dusty so it needs a new one that catches that pvp and merges it with an outstanding pve experience and an intelligent world design that contents different areas of totaly realmcontroled to absolutly anarchic so even there will be a tiny piece of land for criminals and warlords as well as the fields of honor for true warriors.
AoC from birth on is not targeted at that goal and to no surprise it failed pvp wise and will ever do unless the pvpers change their expectations and become realistic about it and the lack of victims^^

I missed daoc as a game, and the more I hear about it the more I want to kick myself in the groin for never trying it out. Everyone I have talked to have told me Daoc PvP was the best. and that no other game have made it right after.

The thing that made DAoC special was I think the RvR (Realm vs Realm) that it had, especially that early in the growth of the MMO market.
That kind of faction PvP was pretty unique among MMO's, although Planetside did a splendid job in that area as well.
Aion had faction PvP in the Abyss, but that was only 2 sides, with the 3rd faction an AI one. Personally I'm looking forward to the faction PvP of The Secret World with its immense contestible area in the underworld, and also GW2 with its world vs world, where your server is your faction.
I'm also hoping that SW:TOR will have some faction warfare but since nothing remotely like it has been released yet in information, I'll just wait and see whether it'll be one of the features or not.

As I see it faction PvP with just 2 factions are nopt good. several reasons for that but the biggest is that the side that gest dominating will often stay dominating due to people choosing the winning side over the loosing side. With 3 factions the third factions will always be the joker that can turn the table. Planetside was good fun this way as you could have attacks going on several places and suddenly a big war happened in one place.
