LOL vs DOTA

SoulkeelSoulkeel Member Posts: 145

I was an avid Warcraft player ever since the beginning and recently I have been playing League of Legends which brings back a classic look at the DOTA (defense of the ancients) map type from Warcraft III. Everyone should give LoL a chance. It's free to play and has some entertaining characters that you can use. Here is a link where you can download the game.

Come and play. It's free, entertaining, and it doesn't take much time to learn to play.

Dota/Lol should be looked at as one in the same. LoL was created by the makers of Dota to be a standalone replacement, personally I think it was extremely successful. The bottom line is if you played Dota(and enjoyed it) then you should play League of Legends, If not then you should atleast give it a good try. It is alot of fun if you can get your group into it.

I love it. I never even played DotA, either. Definitely give it a go if you've never played it yet.

HoN is far superior to both if you are into competitive play at all. Otherwise LoL is indeed pretty fun... just too easy.

I played DotA for like 3 years and got bored. I have been playing LoL since the beta and still loving the game now.  The problem with DotA is that it have a limit. They can only use what they can make with wc3 editor.

LoL is also making a new champion every 2-3 weeks that makes it fun and season 1 just started too , that makes it more fun to play.

DotA made me give up MMOs.

You grind 5h to have 1h of fun, in DotA all the time it's fun time.

But I'm still waiting for a MMO with less grinding, WoD is my best hope.

LoL and Dota aren't mmorpg but are perhaps similar in aspects- such as you strategically level up, you strategically buy items, and you play in a pvp format with an ultimate aim of destroying the opponents base. LoL also has a kind of talent tree too.

But yeah this should be in general gaming really. As far as comparing LoL against Dota. LoL is fun, but pretty one-dimensional. Dota- the original on RoC- was a lot less slower-paced, but was a little more team-centric, and actually had a bit more specialist heroes- eg. the siegers- which LoL opted away from. That isn't to say Dota is better- its just to explain actually they're pretty different.

Out of the two I do play LoL just pure and simply as its so so well-made. Its just I kind of prefer the champions were designed a bit differently. (A bit like a mmorpg- some classes in some games draw you in, and some just aren't so appealling- and thats LoL for me)

LoL because it has summoner level system that makes your playing "worth" something, important for many. LoL also has better UI, graphics and imo more intresting heroes.

I also enjoy that I have to unlock my champions before I can play them..

DotA is about skill, it's a hard game to master that's why it doesn't need a artificial lvl system.

The difference between a vet and a newb is pretty great.

    Hi all!

I have played both, and some of the mayor things that makes me prefare League of Legends over DotA is that,

there is no maphack, and your able to scroll out by far more. Sure there is more things but those is kind a important, to me atleast.

Here is an link for DotA players that thinking of trying LoL that describes the differences etc :):

LoL is indeed great fun, but more importantly, a much greater improvement over dota's current form. They've added many much needed additions to the core gameplay.

The addition of a stat that directly increases magic abilities effectiveness (ability power). The lack of this in dota/hon means it's always going to be unbalanced casters vs physical damage dealers. The casters will be amazing early game, but when it comes to late game, being fed doesn't mean nearly as much as it does to a melee character who can directly modify its damage dealing capabilities.

Respawning inhibitors(creep spawners), no gold loss on death, single super creep per creep wave etc ultimately leads to many more games where a losing team can actually come back, and ultimately win if they play right. I found that in dota/hon, there comes a point where it is hopeless much more easily. Once your defences are breached, creep spawners down, there's no hope. Also further gimping losing players by sapping their gold just makes it that much more impossible, and less fun.

The other additions of minimap pathing, brush which adds an extra tactical element, no denying, and the metagaming summoner aspects are also great.

Hon is better than dota in many respects especially in regards to network stuff (ie ability to reconnect etc etc), and admittedly currently caters for the competitive player moreso than LoL, but with season 1 starting etc that may eventually change.

The problem i have with hon is that it seems to have copied dota's game mechanics far too directly, instead of actually fixing, changing and improving on things that should've been. Though i'm sure others might disagree, or are just content with the way it plays.

These days LoL to is far superior to DotA and HoN, becouse the community while still far from pleasant is not the cesspool of retardation and epeen stroking that are the DotA and HoN communities.

  • loubanlouban Member Posts: 5

Hmmm never tried LoL but im an avid dota player. I guess I'd have to agree that dota and hon's community are really brutal. Guess most players with superiority complex play dota and hon. lol. hmmm.. makes me want to try LoL

League of Legends is fantastic. Everyone should give it a try especially since it's free. As you play you earn points to unlock more champions to play with too. Spending money gets you champions faster and buys you alternate skins for characters but you arn't at a disadvantage at all without spending money.

Hon is fun too but isn't free and while the game is a bit harder and some might say deeper it's a seriously brutal game with the worst community I've ever played with. If you are a new player to hon you will need a seriously thick skin and the abilty to learn and improve fast or you will hate it.

League of legends has the occasional idiot or rager but after a game you are much much more likely to be handing out and receiveing friend requests than you are looking for the ignore box.

League of legends improves faster than hon too, new champions and game improvements come frequently as do new skins to buy. I buy an occasional one since it supports a game I love.

If you do decide to play the best bit of advice I can give you is your number one priority is not to die especially as a new player. If you arn't sure you are going to win a fight run, if you don't see the enemies on the map and you are standing out alone in an advanced position retreat. Discresion is the better part of valor. The game can be very snowbally and a few silly early deaths can allow the enemy to become very powerful.

Been playing LoL for the past...6 months or so.  Game is quite fun and fairly easy to get a grasp of how to play it.  I came from a brief stint of Dota a while back, played some mmos, got burnt out of those mmos, found out about LoL and have been playing it off and on since.  At the very least, its a great "off" game to your mmo's you guys play.  Most games last for 30-40 minutes and its done.

HoN, although I only played for about 2 weeks, consisted of the worst community I have ever seen in a game.  I like a little ish talking here and there, but this game takes it so far in EVERY GAME it's unbelievable.  That was a waste of a purchase.  Seriously though, worst community I have ever seen in my 15 or so years of online gaming.

I do feel I wasted my money with hon. I played it in beta and despite the horrible community I enjoyed most the games I played so I prepaid for it. However by the time it released I'd found LoL and realised how much more fun and less stress it was and now I only play hon if LoL is down for a weekly patch.

This is like saying that American Football is far superior to Soccer, or that Cricket is far superior to baseball. Which if you know soccer and baseball, know is surely not correct, one is even prone to say that the faster paced games have within them a level of fast tactical demand that the slowmoving more strategically oriented games don't.

Lol is easy to learn, hard to master. If the other team is better than your team, then it will show itself. It can't be too easy when the opposition is other players on equal terms.

Lol allows comebacks for a fall behind team. I've seen this happen on occasion, the loosing side holds on, suddenly wins a fight and rushes the enemy base and wins. Everytime this has happened it has happened because the winning side gave away the victory. They went into WoW mode, deciding to take a 15 minute PvP break to farm "endgame items" and levelling their toon.

Allowing the other side to get on par level-wise and allowing the losing side to become strong enough to steamroll a base. Thus being rewarded with a loss after 60 minutes of play instead of a victory after 45 minutes of play.

The game will ever only be as easy as the opposition allows it to be, and a good team that knows how to make one sustained stressfull push will make this a game of challenge.

Exactly. I have to say though, if you thin LoL is easy, you obviously have not played against a well put together five-man premade. The metagame is completely different with premade teams and matchmaking pugs.

Having played all three (LoL, DotA, Hon in order of games played) I have eventually settled on LoL. To me, it just makes an appealing argument with the way they chose to handle certain aspects of the game. I like the fact they took denying out. It is a ridiculous mechanic. Instead, if you want to deny XP to your opponents, you actually have to outplay then and drive them off the lane. It might not be for everyoune, but it is my opinion that changes such as these are improvement for the better as it actually rewards gameplay and not just mindless precise timing.

It is also worth noting that I won't say that LoL is better than any other, much as I won't say any is easier or less competitive than any other. With LoL's addition of ranked ladders, all three are pretty much distinct only by the way they choose to handle the gameplay. They're always just as hard as the other team makes it.

Also, I do think LoL is one of the better balanced games. It might lag slightly behind DotA, but that's merely due to the years of balancing that went into it. LoL is backed up by an enthusiastic crew who put good effort into improving their game, which makes me think that it will remain a good choice to either relieve yourself of few good hours of boredom (because it's easy to get into and have fun with) or go into higher tiers of competitive play (because it takes time to master and plaing against high tier teams takes all of the skill you can gather).

To each their own I guess, but for me, League of Legends looks like the game that delivers entertainment in a game that does not lack in depth.

LoL <---------------------      The kiddos         ---------------------> HoN

                                                                        ( Biger ,better )

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are at least 2 or 3 more games in development that are based on dota.

I played HoN in cb i liked the dark horrorific look of this game and the fact that u could instal some addons that makes u  gameplay a little easier .

But it didnt evolved as LoL is altough LoL has a flashy comic look( The NA version has blood and The EU does not  -.- damn u you all 4 this ^^ )  .

Its like said before, this game  gets alot new champs regulary and its getting new content also .

My favorite is LoL wothout doub from cb where u could easyli pwn with 1  op champ the whole opponent team  and until today where Riot did great job at  balancing all the champs ( besides the latest one that came out Xin -.- ... )

What is also very nice Riot as company hears the community and  does do what community wants to .

This game is getting better and better .
