FFXIV question

Is there a good or evil side or is it pretty much based on the factions you choose to side with?

Just different nations with different cultures, loosely united i believe against the Garlean Empire I think they're called.

Thats the story anyways from what I gather

We will be one big sappy family! So no good vs evil PVP style, its all one team trying to combat the evil Garlen Empire as Wolf put it, as of now they are not selectable players. Maybe in the future but who wants to be a giant turtle dude, orc, or Chicken Headed character? At least that is what FFXI bad guys where, turtle, orc and bird guys.

In the FF MMO franchises, only the mobs are evil.

All players work together in harmony to defeat a common worldwide foe, whatever the lore says that is.

It's not like other games where they invent a "good" or "bad" side to create interest among the subscribers to keep them paying. Those games only last so long until one side or the other dominates and the other quits.

In FF mmos, the idea is to provide actual content for the players that is difficult and requires a unifying teamwork as opposed to invidual or factional glory.

Other games rely on the people to provide the content; ala PvP games. YOU are the content, they just give you an arena or space and you make up your own repeatable battles with no real lore or story needed.

FF mmos give you the story/lore and you're supposed to go explore it everywhere while fighting monsters along the way with other people.

Very good.  I was just curious.  We all don't really know what to expect yet but from what it looks like there seems to be a large database for armor/gear.  Can you customize said armor sort of like in War?

Very classic RPG style, players are good, non players are evil.  We all frollick through the daisy fields from aetherite to aetherite, in search of fame, riches and of course, stuff to kill.

Personally I'm tired of games like Age of Conan that have various formations of humanoids to fight against. I'm also tired of pvp. Hence I'm looking forward to FFXIV, and I'm sure you are too. And yeah, I totally agree...no one wants to be a giant turtle dude or chicken-headed at the least. This reminds me of the pathetic freeps vs creeps pvp system Lotro made. It simply blowed.

I haven't looked at the gear yet, I usually don't look that deeply into games before launch as those things usually work out for themselves.

But if it's anything like FF, there was gear that was pre-slotted like WAR had (WAR: initiative, toughness, etc) and you specced it based on your job.

Example: One of my toons was a Beastmaster which required lots of Charisma to charm mobs. If you failed a charm, the mob tried to kill you. Additionally, I had a Mithra which was the lowest race based CHR in the game. So having already low CHR, I stacked mostly CHR gear first. As I got higher level, I could get away with having a little less. At max, you got a BST gear set with high CHR bonuses just like Invader or Sovereign gear and such in WAR was good for certain classes, and some stunk.

But if I was a Taru, they had tons of Charisma so they could stack mana or hp based gear instead.

If the new gear is like that, it will be easy to get what you need to do your class.

OOH you played BST popinjay? That's great, I was Galka BST and our Charisma was well not that great either. I got to 61 before going over to play WoW (Paly, Hunter, Shaman where what I enjoyed there). What lv you get to on your BST?

    And here is hopeing there will be a BST type job introduced later :}

    Yay! a fellow Beastie!

I got my beast to 75 (along with my RDM, BLM, RNG) but I must say I tooled around on my BST the most.

As a ranger I burned through arrows like no tomorrow and even shot off my Grand Knight's arrow and the other one (can't remmber) into some regular old mobs. I had done that SEVERAL times cause the macro was flubbed, haha. Worse feeling in the game to lose that arrow...

RDM was good cause I never died but getting constant "Wanna group?" was irritating when you realize they only want you for Refresh. (Don't fight! Stop fighting RDM!) lol

BLM I only brought out for BNCM and Dynamis. That kind of power shouldn't be allowed to walk around outside. ^^

I remember launch there were hardly no NA Beastmasters. Vast majority of Westerners played the normal classes while the Japanese were big on BST. BST couldn't even get a party invite cause people thought the pet stole all the EXP, lol. Didn't matter much when you could kill two Tough and VT mobs solo faster than a party could kill one Even con one, so it evened out.

Nothing like the feeling of running through a zone as a BST solo, get bored and just "grab" a companion to run with. Run aways and see another interesting mob and ditch this one for that one. I liked having them fight each other to see which ones were strongest. And I loved slimes and bats. ^^

Remember charming the Kraken near Delkfutt's and hitting the 2 hr special then killing all the mobs around there?

Haven't found a class like that in any mmo since...
