Is there any sort of naming convention in FF games, or is anything acceptable? (that isn't likely to get banned).

No clue. There didn't seem to be one in FFXI. Every server had their share of Sephiroths and... well that's pretty much it, just Sephiroths. There might be a filter to prevent you from taking the exact, correctly-spelled name of a FF character, but I have heard nothing about a naming policy that would punish you for getting around that filter with creative spelling.
With most games as long as there is no real profanity in the name your clear plus your getting a first and last name which is kinda awesome so even if one guys takes an FF character name you can still get it with a different last name or split the name into 2 parts first and last.
I was very happy to hear about the last names, it will make getting a name I want much more reasonable a request. Yeah, I can get OCD sitting at the key board trying to pick my preferred name ... friends have turned off the PC on me before. Yeah. Jerks. /shakes fist
