The Reason I never got into City of Heroes.

Hey, I've played city of heroes before, and i thought the idea of having a superhero mmorpg was a genius one! But I never got into because of one factor, and that was combat!

Like I said, I love superheroes and the game itself was really solid, but the combat ( and I have an issue with combat in all mmorpg's) was simple but boring and repetitive! The whole point and click thing just bores the hell out of me, and thats the main reason why i haven't played an mmorpg in a while now.

TERA looks like it's gonna change this and thats the only reason I'm excited for it, and I'm dieing to play Guild Wars 2, because it looks so polished and it looks brimming with content, but if the combat is just more point and click I'm going to be really disappointed and let down.

So what do we think? Combat plays an important role in mmorpg's and can we put up with point and click if the role playing is good enough? Or is "point and click" good enough to be putting in a game ( cause it seems like a bit of a lazy approach)  that some of us are subscribing to and paying for?

The nature of MMOs has centered around the point and click style because they were always meant to be very casual. In that I mean that the game play was created to be somewhat less intense than an action game in order to allow for actual role-play to occur. A fast paced game discourages role-play because there's too much going on. That's not to say that there isn't room for an action based MMO, and, depending on how you veiw role-playing, it's likely to be more fun. However, I think what we've seen from games that have gone this route, such as Champions and Star Trek, is that an MMO built around action often becomes incredibly redundant and boring.  I suppose it depends on what else the game offers besides combat as to whether it has the potential to be a great MMO or just another multi-player hack and slash.

Yet very few people actually roleplay in these games. Having slower paced combat is fine, but that combat has to have more consistent depth than most MMORPGs provide.

Take something like Diablo. You have point and click, but each click is just one attack. You have to hover the pointer over an enemy and hold down an attack or spell button in order to keep attacking. The player is forced to micro like crazy all the time and this gives a greater illusion of control. MMORPGs go so far in the opposite direction that the main interaction of the game resides in stat tweaking and gearing your character BEFORE combat. In most MMORPGs everything is automated. Hell, you don't even have to watch what's going on in the actual battle, you can keep your eyes glued to the hotbar, healthbars, and status icons that are littered around the edges of your HUD. Kind of makes you wonder why they even bothered to make all those fancy 3D graphics when they could have just made a spreadsheet client instead.

DCU online seems like it will be right up your alley, It's going to be action based combat (think Arkham Asylum)... but obviously not quite that lvl of control.

Or there's always darkfall, try looking away from your screen while fighting a goblin (easiest mob in game) and you will be slaughtered.

Different strokes for different folks -- that's why Marvel Ultimate Alliance exists.

Actually, the reason MMOs traditionally have low-intensity combat is not to allow role-play per se, but to allow socializing (and it lends itself to longer play sessions as well).

For those who want intense combat, the FPS are over there ----------->

CoH has a huge range of experiences. If you played certain powersets to a low level, you could easily walk away bored with combat. I would suggest playing an Ice or Fire blaster to at least level 24 (each can attack once per second) if you want high speed action.

If, instead, you played a Defender or Controller to level 10, you would pew-pew away and think combat is boring.
