Weapon variety?

Povey151Povey151 Member Posts: 250

I see big axes, spears, and punching weapons for DPS

Long swords seem like tank weapons...

please tell me there is a greater weapon variety than this for melee... seems kind of.... underwhelming

Well considering your weapon determines your class, then yes, there are more weapons. Staffs, wands and bows for starters

It is as expected, weapon is your class.  So, a tank wields long swords, a lancers gets polearms, a maurader gets great axes, etc.  Of course there will be lots of variations on the weapon as the levels stack up but other than that I'm not sure what you were expecting.

I'm honestly hoping for more classes, if not at release then soon after (maybe for PS3 launch).

Only 5 physical and 5 magical classes, but 8 crafting classes alone seems a tad unbalanced (not including the 3 already confirmed gathering classes).

Then again, I'm really hoping to see a Summoner-esque class return, only without the mp pet cost in FFXI.

Those are the classes I was talking about.  There are 3 more magic classes yet to be announced/released.

I was just too lazy to name off each one and generalized with numbers.  I'm hoping one of the 3 is the Summoner style class.

Edit: Unless that information is old and they scrapped the 3 other classes until after release, which would make me /sadface.

I believe that those are the only classes that will be avalible at release

I'm with you guys, I'd love more classes.

That being said, 7 fighting classes isn't that bad for a newly released game (IF this is all you get for release). I know Aion only had 8 as well.

I think the idea here however, is that one character can do all jobs. Apart from the inclusion of a summoner class, maybe a white mage type, I can't see there being that much room to add anything too different.

Personally, i'm excited about the lancer class. Final Fantasy IX was my first FF game and still remains my favourite. The lancer kind of reminds me of Freya and the Dragon Knights.

I would have loved to have seen the mages broken down though. Like a Red Mage, a Black Mage etc.

Well im not sure but DoL and DoH are giving off this is a class/profession feel. Im not saying I know or anything but that just my opinion that being said with all the mix and match skills im not sure exactly whats hidden in the framework of the game but maybe there is so much customization they will forget about advance classes for a bit. Maybe we even see some sort of advanced skill system idk all this guessing is fun but in the long run wait til the game drops before formulating your complaints is a general rule I like to follow.

I feel you guys.  I'm a great sword man but it seems to be no sign of one in game.  I'm still rolling as a murauder though.  I'm thinking this will be on the lines of how FFT class system is.  Say for instance there is a samurai class and in order to unlock it you have to have lvl 10 murauder and lvl 10 gladiator.  Then to change into the samurai you have to get a great katana and equip it.  I'm ok either way I just want to play this game lol.

It's plenty for the initial release.

Soon enough we'll have 30 classes and that's already a bit too much. Lot's of skills to collect though.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Is this a rumor, something you are expecting, or actually announced. I would love to see that.

I mean we are missing daggers, short swords, great swords, katanas, ninja swords, maces, flails, clubs, etc. etc. etc.

Now I know this game is more designed off of individual customization as opposed to being a specific "class" but the sheer variety of AWESOME classes was amazing, even at release for FFXI, I just feel a bit, not interested, in whats going on.

I'm wondering how the system will work out as far as taking  a bunch of marauder skills or whatever for a tank and ending up with a mega dps sword and board who can heal or something like that.....

There are templates in the game files for like 30 classes, so they're at least on the concept stage already.

However, there is proof of existence for about 4 extra classes in the beta already, so I think we'll see those classes very soon after the release. The rest might follow depending on what SE wants to do with them.

Some daggers are in the game by the way, Gladiator can wield them.

That's awesome, I'd like to see some more variety with the melee DPS in this game.

SE is the type of developer that builds a solid core and then expands on it constantly instead of spending months or years chasing bugs.  When FFXI launched there were very few classes and they were constantly added to come to the huge list they have now.  As FFXIV grows and expansions are released the classes, and thus weapons, will constantly be expanded on.  I bet we will see daggers, katanas, guns, greatswords, puppets, etc. as time goes on.

For launch the melee weapons are sword/shield, lance, greataxe, claws, and bow.

The great thing about Final Fantasy Online is that any progress you make stays with your character forever so as new classes release you retain your strength from the previous and can then work on a new class instead of having to reroll a brand new char each time you want to try a class.

There was an interview ages ago that I wish I could find that mentioned that the majority of (if not all) weapon types currently in FFXI would make a return in XIV. Some of the disciples of war can wield weapon types other than those shown on the official website I believe. They also made a point of how you could get the class title of samurai by combining skills in a certain way which suggests to me that katanas may already be in the game somewhere.

Now I know this game is more designed off of individual customization as opposed to being a specific "class" but the sheer variety of AWESOME classes was amazing, even at release for FFXI, I just feel a bit, not interested, in whats going on.

You will be able to do this but there are restrictions. Depending on what class you are currently set to and what classes your current skills come from some of them lose effectiveness. A cure spell from a conjuror, for example, will be weaker if used by another class (I believe it changes from being an AOE spell to being single target only). Some skills can only be used by a select few classes as well, with some unable to be used by classes in another discipline. Everyone will be able to hybridise and build their own class but the base classes still have specialist roles due to the way the skill system works.

The additional classes that Hyanmen mentioned include some entirely new weapon types as well, such as whips. Of course at this stage we don't really know if they'll actually make it into the game, although I'd like to think that they will. SE are well aware of the .dat miners digging up info in the game client so I doubt they left the templates for those classes in the client by accident. ;)

I believe most classes have a main wepaon and a secondary weapon options.

Gladiators (tanks) get a dagger as their first weapon and a choice of a sword later.  Conjurer has a staff in the begining and then a choice of elemental wands later. Thaumaturge have a club like weapon at first and get a choice of different staves later.

    Nnnaahh

Most classes have a ranged attack though. Marauders can throw Tomahawks, Lancers can throw Javelins etc. afaik.
