Mmm. Been getting those e-mails since the beginning of this month. My account closed on 9/8/2009, least it did when I unsubbed.
Manually went to the website and contacted support to verify if any of that is true since I didn't trust it (lots of phishing e-mails going around sounding just like that) and, if it was, start to take procedures to get it back. Got a response a week later saying the e-mail I used isn't the e-mail registered to the account so they can't help me, and suggested I called billing if that was in error.
It is, as I used the same e-mail I used to register it to begin with. I got that this Friday, so I'll call Monday. Weird though, but I believe I did stopped playing before the b.net merger so it could also be that.
just delete them I get around 5 per week from the trail I was forced in to from buddy's and that was over a year ago. Basicly billard got hacked for the email list or blizzard employe sold them and you where one of many who's email was tooken.
It's a phishing email.l Hope you didnt click on the links in it! I got one today as well and the email it was sent to was no longer the email of record on my BattleNET account. Deleted it.

I have 2 email addresses.
The first I use for spam and unimportant information (like forum use). The second I use for private, important information (game accounts, etc).
I have only ever recieved this spam on the first email address. So, no, they do not sell email addresses (or atleast not mine). You're just not careful with your personal information.
As for the increased security by making it an email, it actually is. It's appauling how many people create forum accounts using their game account usernames.
Pretty sure it's spam, I get emails like that all the time now, and I was playing WoW while getting those messages, and nothing had been done to my account as far as I could tell (all my characters were completely in tact).

This conversation happens quite often, and for the sake of it I made a completely fresh email address with Gmail. I did not associate it with any of my other email accounts in any way. Any personal information required for account creation was bogus and completely spoofed.
I used this email address to create a trial WOW account. I ended up using that trial account as a RAF to help a friend get to 60 quickly. Shortly after the subscription ended I began receiving the spam phishing emails, all of them Blizzard related. No others. Shortly after that, I began getting random spam mail, the typical mistyped penis enlargement or sex enhancement ads.
The only time I ever entered that email address was during account creation and logging in via the game client. This is also on my dedicated Linux machine, completely free from any malware. Maybe they don't sell email addresses, but somehow they manage to get a completely fresh email address only entered during account creation.

Aren't we glad Blizzard upgraded their security by removing the need of a username and replaced it with your commonly known email address?
