Hello everyone,
first things first, i've known about Mortal for a long time, but i need to try it. I know if its bugs and what not, but i am convinced that Starvault is working on it and they'll be fixed.
I bought it because i support this ambitious project, and because i'd like to see it work.
Just looked into some things and Mortal seems rather complicated, if you have any tips or thoughts, feel free to post !
[downloading goes between 1.3-2.1 MB/PS, can't complain! ]

Wecome to the game.
First off, what type of character(s) are you planning on building, and what do you want to do with that character within the game world? That's really the first thing you'll probably want to get a concept of before starting. Of course, you'll have 3 character slots, so you won't be stuck with a single character type, and can do some experimenting.
Regarding gameplay, one of the first things you should do is read the guides, which can be accessed while in-game by pressing the "H" key. They explain most of the basics in good detail.
You might already have them, but here are some helpful web sites for getting started:
The Mortal Online Wiki: http://www.mortalwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
MO Character Planner: http://mortal.thamal.de/SkillPlanner.php
MO Official Forums: http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/
MO Map Website (there are several others): http://www.navemap.com/pages.php?pageid=4
Feel free to ask any questions, either here or on the official forums. I'm sure a few people will be happy to try and answer. The community in MO is pretty good.

Hello there, thanks for the reply!
Already scoured across the internet to find some basic tips and stuff, thanks for the website links they'll surely help!
Good to hear that Mortal has a good community too!
I'm planning on becoming a spearman/archer type of character, i like to make journey's, either on my own or with others. I'm not much of a crafter type.
thanks in advance!
Everything below is just my opinion - there are probably a lot of other ways to get where you want to go....
The Thursar/Khurite mix is probably the standard for an archer type of character, since strength, dex, and con are probably your most important stats. As they expand the game, different stats will change in importance (like intelligence became in detecting thieves), but long term I think you'll be fine for this type of character (my archer is a pure Veela, party for RP reasons, partly because I'm not a min-maxer, and partly because I expect changes). No matter what race you pick, cycle through your character's age to get the best mix you're looking for.
Also, when spending your points, there isn't much reason not to max your height - I think you get the best long-term benefits from that in HP and carrying capacity.
For your desired character, Recruit or Scout will likely be the best backgrounds for you to pick, as you will start with a good assortment of skills that will be useful to your style. Scout starts will Ranged Combat and Archery, so might be the better choice for you.
As far as starting towns, of the ones I am most experienced with, Meduli, Vadda, and Fabernum are good places to start, probably in that order. They have worthwhile resources and mobs for starting characters pretty close to town. Morin Khur isn't bad, but is more secluded. Toxai is reall secluded, so I wouldn't recommend starting there. I don't know much about the red towns yet.
Take some time to familiarize yourself with the places and NPCs in town, like the banker, vendors, and librarian (sells skill books). Just for future reference, there are different types of crafting stations in each town as well, in case you start a crafter down the road. Also, take some time to read through the pertinent guides (at the minimum, become familiar with what the Tab, Z, X, and R keys do).
To start building your skills, fight the easy mobs (rabbits, weasels, and pigs). You'll gain skills and stats, and the leather, fur, and emalj can be sold to vendors for coin. As your skills improve, you can move to larger critters like Springboks and Wisents.
You can also do some woodcutting (both the Recruit and Scout start with it). This is good for raising strength and con (somewhat slowly), and is also good for some coin (target brownwood where you can find it, then whitewood). There's a lot of whitewood trees right around Meduli, by the way.
Pickaxes and starter swords only cost 100 cp, so are really easy to pick up when you need them. Eventually, you'll need to replace things as they lose durability.
As far as skills are concerned for your build, obviously Archery and Spears will be important to you. If you want a speedy character, I'd also recommend primary skills like Agility, Combat Manuevering, and Endurance (with a lot of their secondary skills helping with either speed or stamina efficiency). Riding is also a good one to consider, since you'll probably want a horse eventually (horses just require riding, you don't need Taming or Creature Control to use them as a mount). There are a lot of other skills in the game - pick the ones that are right for you.
They've just added thievery to the game, so here's some tips on that: when in town, keep as much as you can in the bank. They can't steal items that you're wearing, so that's not a problem. If you want or need to carry items, carry them in large stacks (most things stack to 1000). Large stacks of items, or heavy items, are hard for thieves to steal at the moment. Otherwise, just be alert in town - with FPV they can be hard to see if they're sneaky, but snooping and pilfering come with an animation that can be seen when they are doing it. A high intelligence also allows you to detect snooping.
For weapons and armor, there are a number of crafters that headquarter themselves in the NPC towns. You just have to talk to them about getting bows and spears to train with. Many of them are pretty adept at making the best bows for your personal stats (Alfa Bravo is one of the best - do a search on the official forums for him). And remember, heavy armor can slow you down.
Lastly, as with just about every MMO, this game is probably a lot more fun in a guild, so it doesn't hurt to look through the forum section where the guilds advertise to find one that might best match your playstyle and times. http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/guilds-looking-players/
Well, off the top of my head, that's about all I can think of that might be helpful to a starting player. I'm sure I've forgotten several things, so if I have, hopefully others will fill in my gaps (or correct me in places where I might be wrong).
In any event, I hope this helps, and feel free to ask more questions.

My advice to you is to join a guild as soon as possible. A guild will help walk you through and teach you the ropes. CIR zerg recruits and accepts almost anyone, as long as your not a known pker or general douchbag in game.
This game does still has a few bugs, but right now it already has the most complex and best crafting system of any MMO I've ever tried, and the pvp, while buggy is still awesome.

Woa! thanks for this in-depth reply! thanks for all the information!
i'll take your advice with me when the game is all patched up, last patches going with 2.5 MB/PS, downloading goes faster than the patching itself lol...
I really want to thank you for this 'guide' for my character, i appriciate it!
