I'd have to agree, need to better limit the range of "low".

However, some MMORPGs are not on store shelves - Ashen Empires and Rubies of Eventide.

I played Horizons, but would not vote for it due to its many problems.

Ashen Empires, even though 2D with limited viewing angles, does have content and a nice skill system.

My favorite, "low population" MMORPG is Rubies of Eventide.  It has a lot of nice features . . . really should check out www.eventide.net.  If it had more marketing and more character skills, it would be doing a lot better.

As you gamers probably already know, Fairyland is a decently well-known game. But the Europe version barely has any players on it. It has pretty much the same quality as the American version, and I'd like to see more ppl on the servers. I'd have to say fairyland would be a great choice for best low-population mmorpg. Here's the link. Hope to see you guys online! image www.fairyland-europe.com

I have to cast my vote for Saga of Ryzom.  It's a great, no-downtime game, perfect for soloing or duoing with your significant other that usually isn't too into games, and fun with groups or guilds as well.

Like most of you I bet, I've done quite a few MMORPGs by now: DAoC, SWG, Shadowbane, Eve,  and AO, not to mention over three years in EQ running the spectrum from social RP guild to serious raid guild.  Basically, as life starts being more demanding with a spouse, kids, and more responsibility at work, I just didn't have the time to put into games that I used to.  I quickly found that playing less than 20 hours/week and going afk to read a bedtime story means you can't keep up in a lot of games.

Saga of Ryzom is lower stress without being boring. I've been playing almost a month now and have never had to LFG, never had nothing to do, never met a jerk, and never been too busy to afk within a couple minutes of my son wanting me to read him a story or play on his PS2 with him.  From what I can tell, initial complaints about lack of content and bugs have been or are being addressed. The customer support and live events are clearly superior to anything I've seen. The storyline and setting are interesting and keep a fantasy flavor without being a Tolkien clone.  Characters aren't bound by an initial class choice.  Customization of spells, fighting moves, crafting recipes and even "harvesting" is accomplished elegantly (not that harvesting really turns me on, but some seem to like it...).  Lack of player population on the North American server is being addressed with a merger with the British server, which sounds fun to me.  Other players are incredibly helpful, friendly, and generous.  My wife likes to play, both solo and with me, which is a huge bonus.  Even my 5 year old son enjoys playing, although we have to customize his moves for him since the system is pretty complicated and he can't read very well yet.

Bottom line: if you want a fun world that doesn't penalize you for having a real life, this is a great game.

Hope to see you in Atys.

    Good hunting,

    Hanky

    All very true
    But:
    1) EVE Is Sci-Fi and according to the polls on this site only 15% of mmorpg players even LIKE sci-fi
    2) SWG is also Sci-Fi and is equally as soloable and offers a much more robust PVE system for those who don't enjoy PVP. Also it allows direct control (pure flight) of your spacecraft rather than point-and-click.

I would also state that SWG is just as 'solo capable' as EVE. Hell you can even PVP solo if you so desire (especially if you become a Jedi).

    IMO:
    SWG > EVE
    Both have space stuff
SWG has Space AND Ground stuff
SWG also has far more roleplay than EVE
SWG has a larger community than EVE
SWG has the bonus of the SOE All Access Pass for $7 extra a month so that, if ya get bored, you can go play EQ2, EQ1, PlanetSide or any of about half-a-dozen other titles that SOE produces for FREE.

I'm still pretty surprised at how few votes Asheron's Call is getting. It's too bad the game doesn't have a free trial.

    Played it
    It sucks
Communication is a nightmare (unless they changed it from when I played it shortly after release).

The game itself is OK and does lend itself to soloing but, imo, that is part of it's problem. It also is very very hard to communicate with other players. Last time I was in that game you couldn't shout, was no real guildchat only tells. Hard to get to know your 'guildmates' when you can't talk to them easily.

Killed the game for me. If it hadn't been for the screwed up communications that game could have taken EQ out.

Well, Asheron's Call doesn't have guilds. They have allegiances, and if all that bothered you was the fact that there wasn't an allegiance channel, then you didn't give the game a fair chance. You mentioned nothing about the gameplay. If you want a chat room, you don't even need a game.

It's surprising the kinds of votes you see on other message boards. Look at this poll on a world of warcraft message board. AC has the most votes by far.

One more thing, they have an allegiance chat channel now, so the communication is just as good as any game.

    Low population mmorpgs??

    How about trying Jumpgate?

It's a niche game though the online players are a bit low almost all the time.

I am trying my very best to spread the word to get the online players back on it's legs but I don't see this happen even in the distant future.

I have to go for Ryzom, good friendly community (no l33t kiddies, pretty much adult players). Awsome support (live chat support -devs even sign in!-, ingame support is within 5 minutes, good communiaction). Pretty nice gfx, the screenshots posted on this website are taken with an inferior gfx card. Sound is ok, there only is some music in the towns, but I really don't miss it while playing, the sound effects are ok. Amazing AI, the mobs are social, interact with eachother, ... (for example if a carnivore enters the scene, the herbivores run away, mobs fight eachother, run around, eat, sleap, ...). Original setting, so no elves, orks, dwarves, ... this time. No class based system, you can do what you like. If you decide to become a fighter after a few days/weeks/months crafting .. then you just do it, with the same character. The skill tree is so big that you won't be out of options within a few years :D

Basicly, its a good game :)

Ryzom got my vote due to the wide variety of activities that can be pursued, the ability to customize actions (eg u can edit actions so they draw from different energy pools instead of just one or combine several fight, magic or harvesting actions into a single action), graphics, rapid customer support, and best character and animal animations have seen in any game - some even lift a leg to take a leak lol.

Most game devs seem to believe that boxing ppl into tightly defined roles enhances teaming, when the opposite is more often true as it can be difficult to find a good mix of skills to create a balanced team.  It also becomes boring repeting the same type of activity, as it is in rl.  Hats off to the Ryzom dev team for their open skill system, as in addition to creating variety in game play, teams are easier to form as characters can work different skills to balance out the team, and high level players can team with low level players by using one of their lesser developed skills.  WAY less lft in this game than most because of that, and alot more fun to be able to try out different skills than to be stuck in a predefined box.
