I am a very uncoordinated person. FFXI became second nature after awhile. I never used a controler and probably never will. Hell we even had to make our own macro commands for hotkeys. All you people who do nothing but complain may want to take a break from gaming for a bit... you are starting to act entitled. Play what they have to offer or don't. This endless bitching about games is a good waste of interweb. The only good it does for these threads to keep going is MMORPG gets the traffic and the money from adverts.
Hats off to you good sir.
If a company is going to make a PC version of their game people who want to play their game on the PC have every right to provide feedback on how they would improve controls for PC without people trolling them (and please no "posting on the boards isn't feedback to S-E," it's a forum for communication which can indirectly lead to someone relaying that information to S-E).
From what I've seen in the last few months, FFXIV has probably the meanest community ever. Literally it's as bad as the Aion pvp community.
So some people want to see improved controls for mouse and keyboard? So what? Big deal, if you play on a controller and don't plan on using mouse or keyboard then you have no reason to weigh in on the PC-users feedback, especially in a mean-hearted way.
The thin is,, they are actually doing exactly this atm, but becouse stuf leaked on youtube and such before it was finished, panic started. They have Closed beta . Its geting calibrated.Thats why SE have beta testers, and is an issue thats being taking care of.
Everyone is making asumptions and choicess based on a beta that is NOT DONE FOR MARKETING, but instead to fix this small thins so when game released, ya all can play whatever the hell you whant. They already said countless times they wont make the FFXI mistake control wise and make it more control friendly. So far the controls have been steadily geting better and better. For real , stop complaining bout a half baked cake.
Btw ffxi comunity its way better than other comunities , but fan-boys are fan-boys.And trolls are trolls.you know how many of each are on this forums ?¿.Half of them arent even beta testers and are speaking eighter out of fanatism for FFXI or out of disapointed from eating raw meat that is not ready yet.
How about maybe posting something helpful, Hyanmen, geez.
Anyway...
I just looked at a image of the key layouts and based off what I heard from beta testers, The keyboard+mouse is playable but sucks compared to using a controller.
I can see me using a controller for this... only using the keyborad to chat with.
Actually that kinda sounds fun key board for chatting and use the controller for everything else either or way we have a good 2 months (well a lil less) before release. As long as its playable and not boring im with it.
As a left handed mouse user I am going to be kind of screwed if they only get as far as FF11 controls on Kb+M. Wrapping my brain around using WASD navigation with my left hand and numpad for camera is uncomfortable, if possible at all.
I had to stop playing 11 because of controls. Didn’t want to, but it wasn’t fun or comfortable to move or look. Damn the ~10% of us lefthanders. Suppose I can try to figure out a controller on a MMO, doubtful though. Ugh the agony of compromise!
Maybe I can petition Obama to engage Square (NA) and issue a presidential command that they must properly support lefties in FF14 so he can play? Hmm…
This is more of a preference than a lefty thing. I'm left handed and have always used wasd with the left hand and mouse with the right, If anything, wasd + all the keybinds around it get alot more mileage than the mouse in most games, so using your dominant hand for those controls is an advantage.
I just tried using the mouse with my left hand and it feels a bit awkward, I could get used to it but it feels more comfortable with the right hand, I guess after years of doing something for hours a day you can become ambidexterious when it comes to certain things.
I love my keyboard and mouse, but if a game is designed for a controller I have no issues with that. I use a USB XBox 360 controller - the drivers are painless and usually doesn't need any configuation at all.
But if I have both my hands on a controller this will be the first MMO I communicate mainly with voice. Hopefully that will be a good thing.

I know I am a minority inside the minority.
Tend to drive with mouse (LB+RB), and hotkey settings for common things are 1-6 and Q-Y. Strafe/lazymove with arrows. I can use the mouse right handed pretty well these days but it's not comfortable. Had to because no one else I have ever met has the mouse on left side of keyboard... maybe I was dropped on my head during my IBM PCjr days.

It is very similar to Aion's community before and shortly after that game launched. The arrogance and the condescending remarks, dismissing any negative feedback--no matter how warranted--reminds me so much of it.
I'm all for more options. Have an option for the controller, for keyboard and mouse and for WASD+arrow keys. It makes the game appealing to more people. Besides, how can you release a PC game and not have a good keyboard+mouse control scheme? That's like making a game for PS3 and not not having it work with the controller.
I never played FFXI so this is from the perspective of someone who never played with the controls of FFXI, this is also written with the understanding that it is still in beta and can be changed. My Friend let me play with his beta character for a little bit last night and i have to say that mouse and keyboard controls are not familiar. Now every MMO that i have played W,A,S,D moves your toon and holding the right mouse button allows you to pan the camera. This somewhat works in XIV but it is definately nonstandard. The game seems like it is really going to be a lot of fun i liked what i saw of the combat system. The controls could use some work specially if you are not familiar with how the controls worked in FFXI.
Yeah and they better fix it or people will leave in drones. Nothing disconnects you from your character and breaks immersion more than shitty controls.
I heard the camera controls on the right mouse button are being tweaked, and theyre not nearly as bad as they were in alpha. They just need to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse controls. I heard theres still no classic "mouse look" and movement with a mouse/keyboard becomes disorientating. Its very similiar to the first Tomb Raider played on a PC (if any of you are old enough to remember that)
The game uses a hardware mouse, so theres a lot of lag moving the mouse around. It feels like an old console port.
however, I hear using a gamepad works great. If you can hook your 360 controller to your PC you'll be set. Logitech sells a nice game controller that works similiar to a playstation controller.
I cant wait to see what raiding and grouping is going to be like using a friggen gamepad.

If the game is designed to be controlled with a controller, I doubt it'll be that painful.
Playing a game designed for a controller with a mouse/keyboard is always frustrating (witness GTA, Dead Space, Resident Evil, etc). The reverse is also true (Starcraft on the N64, lol).
As for communication... if voice is integrated I doubt it'll be an issue.

good point. and even if voice-com isnt integrated it wont be an issue. Most MMO's I can think of with integrated voice-com arent used by the players, they use vent

Basically mouse + keyboard is a nightmare. I doubt anyone could play it that way.
Keyboard alone is good, just as good as FFXI
Gamepad is as good as keyboard alone imo, gamepad > all for console lovers.
That's as it stands right now, the mouse is useless so you can throw it away
